Sharon Smith-Carter Movement Sharon has taught yoga and movement since 1999 in her community of Kawartha Lakes.

She opened the first dedicated yoga studio in Lindsay Ontario, path to stillness yoga and focused on mindful practices that could help support positive shifts for health and wellbeing. Her interest has been rooted in the therapeutic aspects of movement as a way to settle the nervous system. Since 2014 she has continued her Somatic studies with Martha Peterson and Essential Somatics. Clinical Somatic Education and somatic explorations have offered Sharon (and her clients) a powerful practice towards rewiring patterns of movement to reduce pain and increase ease. She believes somatics cultivates a more vivid sense of presence to move through daily life. Beyond her studio walls, she is on the team for Essential Somatics Movement Training, a facilitator for the Mind-Body Mental Health program at her local hospital and continues outreach for organizations with an interest in mental health. Sharon has an on-going commitment to her professional development and practices that create conscious change. She is a Clinical Somatic Educator and Movement Teacher (ISMETA), a Yoga instructor (E-RYT500) and Group Facilitator in the Amherst Writers & Artist (AWA) Writing Method.

Four questions about my Knit Without the Knots series!

I get it. You may be thinking we’re untangling wool, 🤷‍♀️🧶 but it’s actually about the aches and discomfort that repetitive knitting movements and other seated crafts can contribute to.

Here are a few common questions you may have been wondering about yourself. Hopefully, my answers offer a little more clarity.

As a lifelong knitter, I know how easy it is to become so immersed in a project that our body isn’t always on board!

As a Clinical Somatic Educator and yoga teacher, I believe in the simplicity of Hanna Somatics. When we begin to restore that brain-to-muscle communication, we can better understand the patterns of tension that contribute to discomfort and begin to change them.

Traditionally, knitters are offered stretches, ergonomic suggestions, rest, splints, or even advice to give it up. But if you light up at the thought of yarn and a new project, isn’t it worth exploring another option that makes sense?

My six-week program gives you the chance to experience gentle, seated somatic movements, ask questions in real time (or send them along if you can’t attend live), and notice what shifts for you.

You’re worth it.🫶🫶

Your body often sets the timer on your knitting. Stiff neck, sore hands, aching shoulders, and suddenly the row you wanted to finish has to wait.

Knit Without the Knots is a six-week live online series for knitters and seated makers. Every class is done seated. When we knit, our bodies can hold on to patterns of tension long after the project is done or put down.

It isn’t about a better chair or a better stretch. It’s about teaching your brain to release the patterns it has learned to hold. Each week we focus on the common places that collect tension while you knit, so you can ease those familiar niggles and head into your new year’s projects more comfortably.

Registration closes Wednesday, October 28. Link in my bio or DM me for details.

There’s nothing quite like bringing home new yarn and imagining what you’ll create. 🧶

But if you’re a knitter who finds that your shoulders tighten, your neck gets stiff or your hands and forearms start complaining, you know the feeling isn’t always quite so lovely.

The good news? You don’t have to give up the knitting you love.

Knit Without the Knots is a 6-week live online movement series where we’ll explore how habitual muscle tension develops and how gentle, brain-based movement can help you find more comfort and ease.

Less tension. More enjoyment. And plenty of knitting ahead!

We begin Tuesday, November 3, and there’s still time to join us.

Comment KNOTS and I’ll send you the details.

Lift one hand. Who picked up the slack?

The opposite diagonal.

The hand and knee still planted are taking the load while the opposite arm and leg go exploring.

The version where my foot stays on the floor isn’t the “beginner” version. It’s where I gather information about my body, in that moment. I can actually feel my weight shifting and stabilizing. Then, if my body says yes, I can float the long leg upward.

No slackers on this team.

This is the kind of thing we play with in the Gentle Movement classes. Slow, curious, and no one’s asking you to hold a pose until you shake. Come join me in the studio in Lindsay. Link in bio or www.sharonsmithcarter.ca

We often practise balance by standing on one foot and trying not to move.

But everyday balance happens while we’re moving.

As we walk, our weight is constantly shifting, and so are our head and eyes as we look around. Adding a gentle head turn to a simple one-legged balance brings the vestibular system into the practice too.

Hold onto something if you need to. And don’t worry about a little wobble. That’s your brain and body communicating and making adjustments.

When your neck, shoulders or hands start to ache after a few hours of knitting, you’re usually told to stretch or rest.

Knit Without the Knots offers a different option: gentle movements that work with your nervous system to help shift the patterns of tension that keep coming back, row after row.

This six-week live online series is for knitters and seated makers.
