Meet Sacral Solutions newest team member, Lacey Reay! She’s a recent graduate from Camosun College's Mechanical Engineering Technologies program, who will be overseeing a variety of duties as we build our company.

Born and raised in the Kootenays, Lacey has always had a ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality. In the first video, you can see her playing a little too hard on her Harley, en route to pick up her new boss Adele Hills from the Spokane airport. In the second video, you can see she’s ready and willing to hit the trenches of entrepreneurialship at full speed, no holds barred.

Cartilage is often overlooked, but it’s a major part of your spine’s anatomy. In fact, over ¼ of the spine’s length is cartilage. You may be asking yourself what exactly cartilage is. It’s a spongy substance that separates the vertebral discs.

Here’s another fun fact for you. Has someone you know ever complained of getting shorter as they age? This is likely due to cartilage. Since cartilage can expand and contract, the constant pull of gravity on your body can result in shrinkage.

Causes of Back Pain in Pregnant Women.

Weight gain. During a healthy pregnancy, women typically gain between 25 and 35 pounds. The spine has to support that weight. That can cause lower back pain. The weight of the growing baby and uterus also puts pressure on the blood vessels and nerves in the pelvis and back.
Posture changes. Pregnancy shifts your center of gravity. As a result, you may gradually -- even without noticing -- begin to adjust your posture and the way you move. This may result in back pain or strain.
Hormone changes. During pregnancy, your body makes a hormone called relaxin that allows ligaments in the pelvic area to relax and the joints to become looser in preparation for the birth process. The same hormone can cause ligaments that support the spine to loosen, leading to instability and pain.
Muscle separation. As the uterus expands, two parallel sheets of muscles (the re**us abdominis muscles), which run from the rib cage to the p***c bone, may separate along the center seam. This separation may worsen back pain.
Stress. Emotional stress can cause muscle tension in the back, which may be felt as back pain or back spasms. You may find that you experience an increase in back pain during stressful periods of your pregnancy.

3 Ways to Avoid Back Pain.

1. Get more exercise. If your back is hurting, you may think the best way to get relief is to limit exercise and to rest. A day or two of rest may help, but more than that may not help the pain. Experts now know that regular physical activity can help ease inflammation and muscle tension. Ask your doctor or health club trainer about back-strengthening exercises. Also, some forms of yoga and tai chi may help you learn proper posture and improve strength, balance, and flexibility.

2. Pay attention to your posture. First, check your posture by standing with your heels against a wall. Your calves, buttocks, shoulders, and the back of your head should touch the wall. You should be able to slip your hand behind the small of your back. Now, step forward and stand normally. If your posture changes, correct it right away.

3. Try not to type on your phone. It's OK to send an occasional text or email on your phone. But remember, when you type on your phone, you're bending your head and curving your spine. If you do that for more than a few minutes, it will put stress on the delicate vertebrae in your neck. The solution is simple. Save longer messages for when you can sit down at a computer with a straight spine.
