What is RDI®? Relationship Development Intervention (RDI®) offers programs for individuals with autism and other developmental difficulties. While many other autism treatments focus on symptoms, RDI® programs focus on building the Guiding Relationship between children and parents in order to initiate growth-seeking behavior in the child. We teach parents how to guide their child to seek out reciprocal social relationships, while also addressing key core issues like motivation, communication, self-awareness, executive functioning, problem solving, etc.

We do not seek to simply mask the condition with scripted conversations or reheard behaviors. RDI® allows for real neuro-cognitive change over time and the capacity for dynamic thinking. With RDI®, you, the parent, take charge of your child’s growth.

Behavior is a response to how your thinking, how you're feeling, how you're able to interact, how you - as a person with a mind, is able to journey through the world. Behavior is certain information that is important, but it’s not the problem. If we are seeing behavior we don’t like, something is going wrong in there.

But 'it's not fair!'- does your child often uses this? Here is a way to handle it that will increase his/her emotional intelligence:

Does your child say, “It’s not fair” whenever things don’t go their way or they don't get what they want?
How to best respond?
FIRST, realize that very often children use the word "unfair" because they don't have other words to describe how they feel.
You can help your child find the word that describes how they're feeling:
"You didn't get what you wanted and now you feel disappointed." or "You feel angry because you expected something different."
When we teach children about different kinds of emotions, we help them build emotional knowledge or emotional literacy.
It's very important because it helps them understand and manage their own feelings AND understand the emotions of other people and respond to them appropriately.
SECOND, if your child says, "It's unfair!", you can help them understand the difference between "fair" and "equal".
Explain that your job as a parent is to make sure that everyone gets what they NEED. And everyone doesn't need the same things or at the same time.
So things are not usually equal but they are usually fair.
You can say:
"Your brother got new shoes because his feet grew. No one else got new shoes because our feet can still fit in out current shoes. Is it equal? No. Is it fair? Yes. When your feet grow and your current shoes become uncomfortable, you let me know so we can get you new shoes."
So you're essentially emphasizing that things might not be equal but they are FAIR and you will make sure that everyone in the family has what they NEED.

RDI Mindful Guiding vs. ABA Compliance Based Therapy | Guiding Autism Family Vlog

They seem to be doing the same thing, right? But why are the results so different? One of the reasons for this is that, if you look underneath, one is trying to get someone to perform, while the other is using the activity just to start to build a respectful, trusting guiding relationship.

Sometimes when therapists are working through goals they lose sight of the relationship. The real goal with any autistic child should be communication and re...

Social relationships inherently involve the introduction of new challenges and information that does not fit the child’s existing ways of organizing knowledge. Children (and adults) with ASD actively seek to avoid such encounters because they avoid change and chaos. This is why children with autism are so often seen as anti-social. People with autism are not anti-social (they actually very much want relationship) they are only lacking dynamic intelligence. The good news, we can fix that!
