Why Does God Let Us Suffer | Aleph Beta

From Dr Mayim Bialik:
“Today is Tisha b'Av, a day of mourning which commemorates the destruction of the First Temple (by the Babylonians ~ 586 BCE) and Second Temple (by the Romans ~ 73 AD). We fast 25 hours and adjust our thinking to reflect on destruction, greed, loss, and hope. Here is how I make the day meaningful: Aleph Beta videos! This particular video focuses on why God allows suffering and offers a path on how to deal with loss. The videos are both intellectually engaging (there's always a deep analysis of Biblical text) AND emotionally gripping (I always cry halfway through).”

Why do bad things happen? Why does God let us suffer? Explore the answer to these questions with Rabbi David Fohrman here.

We pray for those gathering at Sacred Circle over the next few days. A Gathering Prayer (from the Disciple's Prayer Book, 1992):

Creator, we give you thanks for all you are and all you bring to us for our visit within your creation. In Jesus, you place the Gospel in the Centre of this Sacred Circle through all of which all creation is related. You show us the way to live a generous and compassionate life. Give us your strength to live together with respect and commitment as we grow in your spirit, for you are God, now and forever. Amen.

Join us in celebrating World Chimpanzee Day with the Jane Goodall Institute! This special occasion honors the day in 1960 when Dr. Jane Goodall first visited what is now Gombe Stream National Park.

As Dr. Goodall says, "Only if we help shall all be saved." What will you do today to help?

It’s all about expectations….

A scene from my life. This was one of those times when reality didn't quite measure up to my vision... 😄

Word of the Week: Hardships on The Journey

Ezekiel is told to expect his prophesizing to fail, Paul learns his "thorn in the flesh" must be endured, Jesus is amazed and surely hurt by his neighbors' rejection of him. Evidently, the spiritual journey entails failures, struggles, suffering.

It is tempting to seek relief in the midst of painful experiences. Yet, the very woundedness we seek to alleviate is often the doorway into a deeper relationship with the mystery at the Heart of Being. According to Martin Laird, our struggles and failures "open unto the luminous vastness of our depths, where Christ silently presides in the unfolding liturgy of our wounds."

By way of this "unfolding liturgy of our wounds" we are given a ray of hope; we learn to stumble forth in faith, accompanied by Love. While our painful circumstances are not necessarily taken away, the balm of grace helps us cope. Eventually we find ourselves changed in a manner that enables us to emerge from periods of hardship more capable of manifesting Love. Thanks be to God.

WORD FOR THE DAY - https://bit.ly/wordfortheday

07/05/2021

This episode got personal fast.

Steve and I have been together for 30 years and 2020 was probably the most difficult season of our marriage. The stress of trying to keep our kids safe while attending to their need for connection, worrying about our parents' wellbeing, trying to make work work — it was completely overwhelming.

Drs. John and Julie Gottman have dedicated their careers to helping people love and take care of each other. Their work is research-based and life-changing.

After decades of study, the Gottmans and their colleagues at The Gottman Institute can predict with 90% accuracy whether a couple will stay together after observing the first 3 minutes of an argument. That's unheard of in the social sciences.

The conversation is a game-changer.
