Parker J. Palmer

Early this morning, I was drawn to this poem by Mary OIiver’s opening line. She spoke directly to my condition: "Sometimes, I grow weary of the days with all their fits and starts.”

We live in a time when we cannot forget what MLK, Jr. said about “the fierce urgency of now.”

At the same time, we must remember how easy it is to lose true north when the “breaking news” cycle spins us like a tornado, and we can no longer stay focused on what's foundational, vital, and true.

So, alongside MLK’s call to stay engaged, I want to “think like a mountain” more often than I do. I want to remember what it’s like to climb to the heights and look back on the landscape of life.

Up there, reality remains in view, but I'm no longer caught up in the world's madness. From there, I can see the world steady and see it whole, and see myself more clearly as well.

Then I can get a better read on where I am most needed and called before I return to the fray.

I can’t climb a mountain today, but I can look for other ways to regain perspective. If some of you could write a few words about how you do it, I’m sure many of us would be grateful...

Inclusiveness means every part of us is known and loved. Especially if, and when, it includes swearing in the lyrics that come from the bottom of a ripped-up heart. ☮️⚓️❤️

(RNS) — ‘Preacher’s Kid’ carries a parental advisory for explicit lyrics and at turns lacerates youth group lock-ins and short-term mission trips — staples of an evangelical Christian upbringing — while professing a complicated faith.

Sacred Ordinary Days

Sacred Ordinary Days

Hope. Even in winter. Even now. 🌿

This week, we’ve been praying for hope and ruminating over this passage from @themessagebible.

Will you hope with us, friend? Will you cling to the hard-won hope that God is really, truly God? And we are really, truly God’s beloved? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. often offered this benediction after worship services:

“And now unto Him who is able to keep us from falling and lift us from the dark valley of despair to the mountains of hope, from the midnight of desperation to the daybreak of joy, to Him be power and authority, forever and ever. Amen.”

02/12/2021

Joy Unspeakable
erupts when you least expect it,
when the burden is greatest,
when the hope is gone
after bullets fly.
It rises
on the crest of impossibility,
it sways to the rhythm
of steadfast hearts,
and celebrates
what we cannot see.

Sounds True

“It’s different from a number of other personality systems that are out there in that it looks at some deeper things. It looks at our core motivation, why we do things, what our deepest yearnings are…”

— Russ Hudson

With The Enneagram: Nine Gateways to Presence, Hudson shares an in-depth audio training on how to use this powerful system the way it was originally intended—as a pathway to deeper self-knowledge and spiritual attunement. Rather than providing a simple explanatory guide to the Enneagram’s nine personality types (such as the Achiever, the Investigator, or the Enthusiast), Hudson offers an in-depth training in the potential of the entire system. And when you understand the Enneagram as a whole, you will discover new avenues to emotional literacy, greater compassion, and the recognition of all life’s inherent gifts.

"So as we stand in the shambles of our failure and brokenness,
There at the end of ourselves,
We see as if for the first time,
The light of God’s love
Shining through the shards of our brokenness,
In a glorious display of splintered light."

St Francis Prayer

Lord, make me a channel of your peace.
That where there is hatred, I may bring love.
That where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness,
That where there is discord, I may bring harmony,
That where there is error, I may bring truth,
That where there is doubt, I may bring faith,
That where there is despair, I may bring hope,
That where there are shadows, I may bring light,
That where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort, than to be comforted,
To understand than to be understood,
To love that to be loved.
For it is by forgetting self that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven,
And it is by dying that one awakens to eternal life.

*This is the version of the St Francis Prayer that St Teressa of Calcutta prayed.
