Dean Richard Reznick is pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Ross Walker as Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education in the School of Medicine. This appointment is for a five-year period from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2020.

Following the receipt of his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Walker completed his internship and residency training in general surgery at Queen's University. He subsequently undertook a two-year fellowship in surgical oncology at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York and returned to Queen’s in 1989 as an Assistant Professor in the Department Surgery. Dr. Walker was promoted to Associate Professor in 2008 and was granted tenure in 2013. He also served in the role of Special Advisor to the Associate Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education from 2009 to 2010. He was first appointed to the role of Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education on July 1, 2010.

Dr. Walker has held an attending staff position at both Hotel Dieu Hospital and Kingston General Hospital since 1989. From 1991 to 1997 he served as the Core Surgery Program Director at Queen’s University, and was subsequently named the Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program in the School of Medicine from 1997 to 2010. In this role, he has successfully guided the general surgery program through successive accreditation reviews by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Recognized nationally for his contributions to clinical education, Dr. Walker served as Chair of the Postgraduate Education Committee for the Canadian Association of General Surgeons from 2002 to 2005 and as the Executive Secretary of the Royal College General Surgery Examination Board from 2004 to 2010.

At a provincial level, he has served as the General Surgery Lead Program Director of the Centre for Evaluation of Health Professionals Educated Abroad (Touchstone Institute). In 2006 Dr. Walker accepted the Residency Program Excellence Award from the Professional Association of Internes and Residents on behalf of the General Surgery Residency Program and in 2008 he received the Certificate of Merit Award from the Canadian Association of Medical Education.

Dr. Walker is an active member of eight professional associations, including the Ontario Medical Association, the Canadian Medical Association, and the Canadian Association of General Surgeons. Queen’s now has access to Dynamed, a comprehensive point-of-care tool (POC), a competitor to Up-To-Date which we are not financially able to purchase for Queen’s users. Dynamed is getting excellent reviews and I would like to invite you to hear the vendor rep demonstrate this tool as well as its companion, Isabel, which is a differential diagnosis POC tool.

You can take a look at both of these, and more, on this page: http://guides.library.queensu.ca/poct (proxy access is required if you are not on campus)

The process to obtain the mobile app for Dynamed is not as straightforward as what we normally do to get a mobile app. The vendor and the librarians will be available to assist with this process.

Also, if you are interested in obtaining other mobile apps for the products purchased for Queen’s users by Bracken Library, please drop in on this second “download day”:

Date: October 29, 1:30-4:30
Place: Bracken Library, e-lab (rm 128) and room 127

Isabelle Laurendeau, from EBSCOHost, will do presentations in the e-lab (rm 128) at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 – each runs for about 30 minutes.

The app download itself takes about 15 minutes and assistance will be available after each presentation OR if you are familiar with the product, you can come directly to room 127 for the download only, at any time during the afternoon.

We realize that the time will not work for everyone, you may want to drop in the library, at your convenience, and a librarian will help you.
