A warm hello! I’m gathering some research for Mind Over Chatter Guided Meditation, my guided mindfulness meditation business. I work with people leaders and administrators whose employees are at high risk for compassion fatigue. They’re genuinely concerned for their employees’ mental wellbeing and are looking for cost-effective ways to prevent physical and emotional exhaustion and a lessened ability to empathize. I’m looking for people who match this description to answer a few survey questions for me. If this sounds like you or someone you know, would you kindly complete and/or share my short 10-minute survey? I want to make sure that the package I’m creating is on track with where this type of people leader is at. If they prefer, their answers can be totally confidential. Here is the link to the survey: https://forms.gle/MRTWeLzNFG92KyuX6 With sincere thanks and warm wishes, Tanya Ross Certified Mindfulness Meditation Facilitator Mind Over Chatter Guided Meditation 647-505-0387
I learned at the end of this strange and intense week that it is taking me more time to get things done than normal, because my mental energy have been getting depleted more quickly. This isn't surprising but it was a good reminder. Saturday was a beautiful sunny day and quite crisp here in Kingston. I decided to take the day off work, bundled up and spent some time outside, cleaned my house, cooked some food, and made some snacks to drop off at my daughter's doorstep - she and her partner are in quarantine after coming back for abroad, he will then be going back to his work as a nurse in a maximum security prison. We chatted through the window pane and I blew her some kisses. I also took a break from the news cycle and did some unrelated reading. I am very aware of how fortunate I am to have a safe and comfortable living space, access to quality food and not be parenting a horde of restless cooped-up school aged kids. My ageing parents are not stuck in a nursing home or hospital where I can't visit them. I am not having to panic about where my next mortgage payment will be coming from. I am not in the front lines worrying about getting ill or making difficult moral decisions about patient care. I know that many of you are working with vulnerable populations such as children in care and that it may seem trite to have someone tell you to "bake and go for some fresh air." That is not the point of my post. My point is that in order to be able to be of any use to anyone else, we need to stay well, and retain the ability to think clearly. I will be writing more on this in the next few days. When challenging times arise, I always think of something my mother often said when I was growing up: "What can you contribute at this time to assist your fellow human beings? What unique skills or expertise do you have?" For some of us, these are concrete gestures such as delivering groceries and checking in on elderly neighbours, donating to a charity if we can afford it at this time or supporting in whatever way that we can a local small business that have had to shut down. On the work front, what are the elements that are within your control at this time? (likely very few) How can you ensure that you have a community of practice? Is there a place to debrief safely? We may not be able to change some of the outcomes of the collateral damage this pandemic is having on our most vulnerable folks, but we need to find a way to stay well in order to be able to serve them long term during this mess and afterwards too. Finally - here in my town, the head of the local Emergency Department said that there are two very concrete things that Kingstonians can do to help health care workers at this time: strict social distancing and donating blood, if we are eligible to do so. More needs will arise as the days unfold so let's take care of ourselves so that we are ready and able to serve.
