Process, Product, and Personal Growth — Nancy Mohrbacher
Process, Product, and Personal Growth — Nancy Mohrbacher
I write these words on my oldest child’s 30th birthday, a milestone that also marks the 30th anniversary of the day I became a mother. In those 30 years, I have learned many life-changing lessons about breastfeeding and parenting. To mark this occasion, I’d like to share a few.

The Queen's Family Health Team will be running a 6 week session starting soon and has some openings.
Life with a new baby is not always what is expected. Post-partum blues, or baby blues, are common. The program is laid out as follows:
• Week 1. Introductions and group share (as comfortable)
• Week 2. Coping with feelings of isolation
• Week 3. Myths and expectations of motherhood
• Week 4. Who am I now?
• Week 5. Self-care strategies
• Week 6. Wrap-up and takeaways

Did you know it is not uncommon for milk to look green if the mother has consumed a large quantity of green vegetables.

Can a change in position help relieve ni**le pain?
Small adjustments in positioning the baby can 100% alleviate ni**le pain! Breastfeeding may be uncomfortable in the early days, but it shouldn't make you dread every feeding & ni**le breakdown is not normal!
If you are experiencing pain or ni**le damage, reach out to a Lactation Consultant for some help.
Just one consult can potentially be game changing!

All newborn babies cry. Some cry a little, and some cry a lot! It can be stressful for parents when babies cry.
What did you find helped when your newborn cried?

I am still doing home visits with PPE (masks & Gloves) through COVID ( as long as everyone passes the COVID screening questions )
Breastfeeding support can be crucial in the early days to overcome some of the common hurdles.
Unforunately most private insurance companies don't cover the fee of Lactation consultant. Maybe something people should try to get added to their benefits?
I did find out today that some Sunlife plans will cover the cost.
Contact me for a in person or virtual visit.
Fees can be negotiable during the current situation.

"If you've never seen a placenta, this beautiful image shows the size of it perfectly. After birth, the placenta detaches from the uterus leaving a wound the size of a plate. Now imagine you had a wound that large on the outside of your body. You would be told by everyone to rest, look after yourself and take time to heal.
So why is it expected that new mothers should 'bounce back' so quickly after childbirth? When this is just one thing that needs healing; not to mention all the other physical, emotional and psychological changes we need to adjust to..
If you're a new mum reading this, it's ok to stay in bed with your baby. It's ok to ask others for help. It's ok to prioritise yourself and your baby. Get your family involved, ask your friends for some help, get a postnatal doula. Don't rush your post-birth recovery, be easy on yourself. No better time to do so than just after you've given birth.
ETA: On average it takes about 4-6 weeks for the uterus to shrink back to its pre-pregnancy size.

Guidance from the WHO on breastfeeding with suspected COVID-19 with mild symptoms:
"Considering the benefits of breastfeeding and the insignificant role of breast milk in the transmission of other respiratory viruses, a mother could can continue breastfeeding. The mother should wear a medical mask when she is near her baby and perform hand hygiene before and after having close contact with the baby. She will also need to follow the other hygiene measures described in this document."

The MotHERS Program
Safe sleep practices - such as putting your baby to sleep on his back and ensuring a safe sleep environment - have dramatically reduced the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which can be defined as the sudden, unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant. It peaks at 2-4 months of age and is relatively rare after the baby turns one.
