These past 16 months have been nothing short of devastating for nurses across Canada. They have been resilient and deserve nothing but respect. Yet, the Alberta government has proposed to slash nurses’ wages by 3%. This short-sighted move is completely unconscionable. We stand in solidarity with the United Nurses of Alberta in their fight for respect and equality.

The value of nursing is under attack in Ontario. When our profession is disrespected and our safety put at risk, we won’t be silent. We will resist. We will fight back. In the courts, in the media, whatever it takes. ona.org/no-silence/

ONA – Ontario Nurses Association

Hello Leaders,
I think we can all agree that everyone is completely drained. And, not only are we burnt out, we are all stressed.
The pandemic has been tiring and yet, we still have so much to do for our patients, residents and clients. And, we have to continue to fight for the respect that we all deserve from the Ford government.
WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH. We are exhausted and fed up with the complete lack of support and regard for our value, not to mention the disrespect from the Ford government!
The government has provided pandemic pay and COVID-19 salary scales to select health-care workers, including personal support workers and physicians, but has left most others, including nurses, behind. Despite saying nurses are heroes, the Ford government has continued to bully nurses and has eliminated our right to effectively collectively bargain. We have not had an increase on par with inflation in more than a decade.
That’s why ONA is – again – calling for Premier Ford to show he believes what he says about nurses. He must recognize the immutable value of nurses and immediately exempt them from Bill 124.
We are 68,000+ members strong and united. Premier Ford must exempt nurses and health-care professionals from Bill 124. Otherwise, we will continue with escalating actions leading up to the provincial election on June 2, 2022. We will not forget.

As a first step of solidarity, please send your email to Premier Ford to tell him to exempt nurses and health-care professionals from Bill 124 immediately. Visit www.ona.org/bill124 and please share this link with your members, colleagues, family and friends.

Further actions will be announced. Please stay tuned.
In Solidarity,
Vicki

For Action
Long-Term Care COVID-19 Commission report released: ONA is calling on the Ford government to act immediately to implement the recommendations in the Long-Term Care-COVID-19 Commission’s final report. We note, in part: “Government’s utter failure to protect the residents and staff in long-term care homes from COVID-19 is tragic. It would be even more of a tragedy if this report sat on a shelf and collected dust, as countless other reports have done. Enough is enough – failure to take action now is not an option.”
Register now for the June Provincial Coordinators Meeting: Registration is now open for the June PCM which will be held virtually on June 15 and 16. Click here to visit the registration page and for additional information, including how to donate to Feed Ontario.

We are devastated to share with you the news that an ONA member working at Halton Healthcare Services in Milton suddenly and tragically passed away on the weekend.

Stefanie Van Nguyen, RN, was a well-respected registered nurse who loved and cared for her patients and coworkers, and who was deeply dedicated to her work as a front-line RN.

SEIU Healthcare

Our typical government that praises our nurses Nd healthcare but acts opposite of their words.

SEIU Healthcare President Sharleen Stewart and ONA President Vicki McKenna are hosting an online media conference where they are calling on the Ford government to respect the fundamental human rights of those working in female-dominated health-care professions in our nursing homes. Despite calling these workers heroes throughout the pandemic, the Ford government is moving forward on an appeal of an April 2019 decision by Ontario’s Divisional Court that significantly strengthened the pay equity rights of female-dominated professionals. The appeal is scheduled for October 6 and 7, 2020. SEIU Healthcare and ONA are calling on the Ford government to drop the appeal and stop wasting money fighting against pay equity for those who need and deserve it.

ONA will not tolerate racism

June 1, 2020

The horrific events over the past several weeks involving the outrageous treatment of Black people have been beyond unfathomable.

In solidarity, communities from across North America – including Ontario – have been protesting the treatment of Black people.

As ONA President, and along with the Board of Directors I want to be clear that we will not tolerate any form of racism, discrimination or intolerance. The equal treatment of our members, and the freedom from any forms of racism, discrimination and harassment in the workplace are core tenets of our union. We will challenge all who racially discriminate, and will take action against all forms of racial intolerance.

In Solidarity,

Vicki McKenna, RN

TODAY is the day! Call the Premier to demand safety in LTC. Please share.

Office of the Premier 416-325-1941 or Constituency Office 416-745-2859. Residents, nurses and health care workers need our support! Lives are at risk!

If you reach a staff person, make sure to have them record your concern. If you receive a call fail message, the lines are flooded! Keep trying! If you call the constituency office, and you reach a staff person named Ben Golding, do not worry, this is not a wrong number.

I am a healthcare worker - a Registered Nurse and to be honest I don't need free pizza or free cups of coffee. I don't need money off vouchers etc. I am grateful that I won’t be losing all my income due to this virus and as much as I greatly appreciate the gesture, please please please offer a free cup of coffee or pizza to the families who are struggling to feed their children, the homeless on the streets, the older generation or self employed and to anyone else who is suffering financially from COVID-19 measures and are not covered by government grants or loans.

To my colleagues past and present, please repost. 💝

Thanking all my Nursing colleagues during this critical time. This is the Bicentenary of Florence Nightingales birth. She is the founder of our modern Nursing profession. One of her principle rules was "Hand Washing to prevent spread of disease". Still as relevant today as it was 150 odd years ago. 36 years a Nurse. You can visit our celebration of her legacy at our website, Nightingale2020.ca

ONA welcomes new measures to protect hospital nurses and the patients they care for

“We have spoken out, loud and clear, at government tables that protecting the health and safety of nurses is paramount and we welcome these new measures for the hospital sector,” ONA President Vicki McKenna, RN, says. “This enables nurses to use the precautionary principle to prevent exposure to and transmission of COVID-19, something that ONA has been advocating for from the start.”
