Medical student creates handbook for diagnosing conditions in black and brown skin | CBC Radio

When seeking help from our medical professionals, we hope that all patients are met with the same level of care. However, even in countries with great healthcare systems, that is not always the case. There is still a large knowledge gap with healthcare professionals in identifying signs and symptoms in non-white skin, leaving a large room for error if the disease does not appear the same on darker skin tones. Malone Mukwende, a second-year medical student in the U.K., sought to fix this issue by co-authoring Mind the Gap, a handbook detailing clinical signs and symptoms of disease in black and brown skin.

Malone Mukwende a second-year medical student from St George's, University of London, has just created a new guidebook to help doctors identify clinical signs on Black and brown skin after discovering gaps in doctor training about how disease manifests differently on dark complexions.
