From conception to delivery, a woman’s body provides a remarkable environment for a baby to grow and develop. The first trimester marks the beginning of crucial neurological development, laying the groundwork for the nervous system that will later support the development of primitive reflexes, including the Moro reflex and the fear-paralysis response. These responses are associated with the developing nervous system’s reactions to stress, sudden stimuli, and perceived threats.
As the baby continues to develop, these early neurological processes contribute to the foundations of sensory processing, stress responses, and emotional regulation. , , regulation

Helping Children Cope with Stress
Children do not always say when they are feeling stressed. Sometimes, their feelings show up in everyday behavior instead.
As parents and therapists, we can notice these signs and offer simple, supportive ways to help children feel calmer.
What Stress Can Look Like
A child may seem more irritable, anxious, withdrawn, or tired than usual. These changes can be important signs that the child is carrying more stress than they know how to express.
Busy social schedules, constant digital stimulation, and stress in the world around them can all feel overwhelming. Parents may also be experiencing stress, which can add to the atmosphere children are living in.
A Simple Technique: Balloon Breathing
One gentle technique for helping children cope with stress is balloon breathing. It is simple to introduce and can be used at home or in the classroom.
Balloon breathing can help calm the body and support the child in moving toward a calmer, more relaxed little being. , , ,
