Happy New Year Everyone!!
"The file" does an incredible disservice to many people with intellectual disabilities.
Imagine if you had a file. What would it say about you? What if it recorded some of your worst moments or decisions? Would you want people to read it before they meet you?
When supporting people, be more concerned with meeting and getting to know the person. Too often 'the file' dictates a person's reputation. The contents of files should be reviewed and adjusted over time.

ID: Text reads: This is Jim. Jim does not have a disability (drawing of Jim). Jim got angry and threw a cup against a wall and you'll never know it.
Second half of text reads: This is Mike. Mike has an intellectual disability (drawing of Mike). Mike got angry and threw a cup against a wall and it will be in his file for the rest of his f-ing life, and everyone who supports him will read about it.
Great news! Finally there is a pay increase for those providing front line support to individuals with disabilities.
Thank you to all those who contacted their representatives and shared their concerns.
Today brought very welcome news for the Community Disability Services (CDS) sector. The Ministry of Seniors, Community and Social Services announced a $26 million increase in funding for the Community Disability Services sector; this includes $24 million towards increases in wages (a 10% increase)...

Jessica Stuckey is 24 years old and lives with a permanent intellectual disability. She spent 36 days in a correctional centre because the nearest psychiatric facility was full.
This is a song about disability serviceland.

Membership is activism. Your activism may be as simple as purchasing a membership, or as involved as actively supporting the organization in volunteering at fundraising and community awareness events, or by providing guidance and governance to the association as a member of our Board of Directors. Your membership dues and contributions to the organization are an investment into an inclusive community; an issue that is critical and urgent in the lives of people with developmental disabilities, and we cannot think of a better investment than that.

Today we're remembering Betty Grigg, a mother, who was instrumental in start of the first school in Lethbridge for children with developmental disabilities.
At a time when children with disabilities where encouraged to be institutionalized by the state, sent away from their families and communities, Betty Grigg was among the parent who kept their children with disabilities at home and fought to build a school where they could learn. The school she help found was named was named the Dorothy Gooder School, which was across from Galbraith Elementary School in Lethbridge, Alberta.
This month for , we'll spotlight some of the stories surrounding the beginnings of the Dorothy Gooder School.
Inclusion Lethbridge will be highlighting inclusion in the local schools with the Betty Grigg Inclusive Education Award on Nov. 25 at our Winter Gala - tickets available on our website.
