Increased processing of SINE B2 ncRNAs unveils a novel type of transcriptome deregulation in amyloid beta neuropathology

Very excited to announce that the first paper of our lab on the role of SINE RNAs in #Alzheimer's disease was just published in eLife! Congratulations to the amazing graduate students and lab members Yubo Cheng,
Luke Saville, Babita Gollen, Chris Isaac, Abel Belay and thanks to our collaborator Majid Mohajerani University of Lethbridge. This study was only possible thanks to the funding from the AI Prion Institute Alberta Innovates, Alzheimer Society Alberta and Northwest Territories and Alberta Bioinformatics Network (BioNet Alberta) #GenomeAlberta Genome Canada

The functional importance of many non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) generated by repetitive elements and their connection with pathologic processes remains elusive. B2 RNAs, a class of ncRNAs of the B2 family of SINE repeats, mediate through their processing the transcriptional activation of various genes in...

Congratulations to University of Lethbridge scientists, Drs. Steve Wiseman and Athan Zovoilis, on receiving Research Capacity Program (RCP) grants to continue their important work. Dr. Wiseman's research focuses on the effects of chemicals resulting from human activity on aquatic organisms and ecosystems, while Dr. Zovoilis is studying RNA sequence changes that may be connected with cancer and dementia.

The RCP report also features Dr. Stacey Wetmore for her extensive, innovative and influential work in computational chemistry, which has far-reaching implications for disease prevention.
