One thing I always have in my house is elderberry syrup.

Elderberry has been used in traditional medicines for thousands of years, most notably to help with symptoms and shorten the duration of colds and flu.

Researchers in Israel found that elderberry disarms the enzyme viruses use to penetrate healthy cells in the lining of the nose and throat. Taken before infection, it prevents infection. Taken after infection, it prevents spread of the virus through the respiratory tract. In a clinical trial, 20% of study subjects reported significant improvement within 24 hours, 70% by 48 hours, and 90% claimed complete cure in three days. In contrast, subjects receiving the placebo required 6 days to recover.

The syrup concentrate is readily available in most health food stores or can be made fairly quickly and easily using dried elderberries.

So... Do elderberries really live up to the hype?
Yes!

Brain fog is your immune system letting you know you're inflamed.

Do you ever get brain drain? That feeling you just can't shake - you can't concentrate or keep focus, you have to read things over and over to make sense of it, or you just find yourself not thinking clearly?
Chronic stress and the long-term effects of cortisol can cause this type of inflammation, but the truth is that it can come from many different causes...

🧠 poor blood sugar control
🧠 lack of sleep
🧠 leaky gut, or overgrowth of yeast or bacteria
🧠 hormonal imbalance
🧠 toxic build-up of chemicals and heavy metals
🧠 inflammatory foods
🧠 underlying infections

Our immune system goes into overdrive trying to manage the symptoms, but the end result is neuroinflammation. Managing stress, improving gut health by detoxing the diet and getting more restful sleep go a long way in keeping the brain drain at bay.

Aconite 🌙

We’re coming into cold & flu season. And while this year looks a lot different than previous years Aconite is still a must have for your medicine cabinet.

Used for colds that come on suddenly or in acute fevers. Aconite eases symptoms in the initial phases – sniffles, sneezes and sore throats, especially useful when symptoms follow a cold wind or emotional stress.

If you want more info on Aconite & it’s uses, DM us or visit the website for an acute consult www.uncommonwellness.ca

Let’s talk shallow breathing.

Shallow breathing is defined as small, short breaths generally taken through the mouth. When we breathe in a shallow way, the body remains in a cyclic state of stress. This sets off the sympathetic nervous system, thus producing the fight-or-flight response.

Over time, this can seriously affect our health. The chronic stress that is associated with shallow breathing results in lower amounts of lymphocyte, a type of white blood cell that helps to defend the body from invading organisms. This lowers the amounts of proteins that signal other immune cells, and the body is then susceptible to contracting acute illnesses, aggravating pre-existing medical conditions and prolonging healing times. Yikes!

Diaphragmatic breathing, on the other hand is breathing by using the diaphragm to pull air deep into the lungs. Visually, you’ll see the belly expand and chest rise as you inhale air through the nose and into the lungs. As you exhale, the belly contracts. Deep diaphragmatic breathing can help lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, relax muscles, decrease stress, and increase energy levels. Not to mention it helps to ground us as well.

TRY THIS ✨To practice breathing from your diaphragm, lie on your back with one hand on your stomach and one hand on your chest. Breathe in deeply while pushing out your stomach as far as you can. The hand on your stomach will move out and the hand on your chest will remain still. When you exhale, you will feel your stomach pulling back in. Both your chest and shoulders should stay relaxed and still.

‘Tis the season... for CROUP!
-
Croup is a common childhood virus that is usually seen in children under 4 years. It causes swelling of the larynx and trachea. Symptoms include:
🦠voice hoarseness
🦠runny nose
🦠fever
🦠breathing difficulty
🦠a characteristic harsh, barking cough (think barking seal)

The barking cough and trouble breathing usually appear unexpectedly in the middle of the night. Because children may have only mild hoarseness and a cough during the day, the middle-of-the-night spasms are frightening to parents as they seem to appear without warning.

It is still recommended to seek out medical advice but croup is most often harmless and requires only tender loving care, a humidifier and cool air to relieve the symptoms. Homeopathy can be a parent’s best friend at times like this. You will find that your child recovers very quickly from croup when you use homeopathy, which means that all of you will get much needed sleep sooner! And rather than using prescription cough medication with potential side effects, you will have strengthened your child’s immune system with medicine that is non-toxic and gentle, supporting the body’s own ability to heal itself.

If you want more info on croup message us or visit our website www.uncommonwellness.ca

🦋 Through all the ups and downs, set backs & struggles - the healing is still happening. And the progress is definitely not linear. It is coming from in and out and in a network of connections that make up our holistic self.

5️⃣ min mental health checklist:

💕 Have I been thinking kind thoughts about myself today?
🌱 Have I spent time outside in the fresh air today?
🌙 Am I getting enough sleep?
🍎 Am I eating regular meals?
💪 Have I moved my body today?
🧠 Have I been comparing my real life to someone’s highlight reel?

Gratitude.

This year has been hard. This year has been heavy - I get it. I’m feeling it right alongside with you.
In the hardest of times, I’m reminded of one of my favourite quotes: “being thankful is not always experienced as a natural state of existence. We must work at it, akin to a type of strength training for the heart.”

Let’s talk Mudras ✨
-
Each of our fingers represents one of the five elements:
Ring Finger | Earth
Thumb | Fire
Index finger | Air
Small Finger | Water
Middle Finger | Ether
-
Ancient Hindu philosophy says that those five elements are an integral part of every human being. Yet, every body has a different balance of those elements: while some of us need more water, others might lack the element earth. The more balanced we are with those elements, the more health and wellbeing we gain. Mudras help us to support our system and finding this balance.

Spreading all 10 fingers creates a reflex which causes the chest vertebrae to spread out, this increases the amount of air you can take in.
🖐 TRY THIS : place both hands out in front of you, spread all 10 fingers and take a deep breath in, then exhale. Now do the same but will both fists clenched. Notice and feel the difference in the amount of air you can take in. Neat hey!? ✌️
