It’s been a minute, and for reasons I’ll share in stories a little later-it isn’t a super easy day to share five things I’m grateful for this week.

If you’re new here, on Fridays (not every Friday but when we can) we share our Friday Five-five things we are grateful for, or five things that brought us joy through the week.

In no particular order, here are mine;

🥰 Supporting a family through a VBAC
🥰 A helpful visit with our pediatrician
🥰 The ability to have flexibility in my schedule
🥰 Rest
🥰 Reconnecting with my doula colleagues to catch up and offer support to one another.

“I am happy because I’m grateful. I choose to be grateful. That gratitude allows me to be happy.”
-Will Arnett-

So, tell me-what’s on your Friday Five this week?

This post is for you.
💜
For you who did it all “right”
For you who thought positive thoughts.
For you who had a magical pregnancy.
For you who sought out your birth team with intention.
💜
This post is for you who read books, listened to podcasts, took prenatal classes.
For you who used birth affirmations, took care of your baby and body with care.
💜
This post is for you who did everything right, only to have everything go wrong.
💜
I want you to know you are strong. That you didn’t do anything wrong. That you did everything you could to have the birth you desired.
💜
I want you to know I’m sorry it wasn’t what you expected or hoped for.
💜
This post is for you. I see you. And I know that sometimes, birth isn’t as simple as we want it to be.

I’ve heard a lot of birth stories over the years and some of them have some pretty funny parts attached.
😂
I remember, early in my career I saw someone who came to me for prenatal massage. I can remember what she named her baby, and I remember the tattoo on her back but aside from that-this story stayed with me.
😂
It was her first, and she had come to me a few times before she gave birth. After she had her baby, she came back for a massage.
😂
“Omg, Vicki. I’m so embarrassed! After the baby was born, my placenta, it like, shot out! Like, across the room! Dr. Dave’s looked around and said, “that’s never happened before.”
😂
She was giggling while sharing, and I was too-imagining the scene, picturing Dr. Davey, boots and buckle and all considering what just happened.
😂
In the end, I reassured her that it was okay and will remain to be a good memory of that day.
😂
Do you have a story of something funny from your birth? I’d love to hear it!

I just came off a stretch of supporting 6 families in 6 weeks-the busiest stretch I’ve had since before the pandemic.

What I want you to know is that Birth can be better. It’s better when you think about what you want it to be like and seek out the people who will support it.

Birth can be better when you gather information and find the next best thing, not as resignation but as alternatives to your original plan.

Birth can be better when providers and birth support people set aside ego and acknowledge that birth has many variables that dictate outcome. Policy should not override client preference unless safety is compromised.

Birth can be better when it’s seen through “possibility not probability” in terms of birth education-knowing all possible outcomes and how you will prepare for them emotionally, should the need arise. Speaking with your providers prior to understand outcomes and how to prevent them, if possible.

Most importantly, birth can be better when it’s seen as a normal body function. Not one to fear. Not one that is out of your control.

Things I heard from clients last week;

From a dad who took prenatal classes- “it was amazing! It was just like you said!”

From a client with a high risk birth & NICU stay-
“I just felt so empowered and amazed at what the human body can do.”

From a mom who took prenatal classes-“thank you for teaching us we were the bosses of our birth.”

You have the power. I just know it.

Last year I was watching an Instagram story from
An indigenous midwife.

They were talking about how so many people hear the comparison of giving birth to running marathons.

I know that this is one comparison I’ve heard over the years. The midwife went on to explain why it really isn’t like that.

They explained that when you run a marathon, you are using you thinking brain. As you run and it gets difficult, you can slow your pace, you can stop and walk or, if you decide to stop running entirely-you stop. And the marathon is just over. Because you decided it was.

Birth doesn’t work that way-you use a primitive part of the brain.

Because of the Grand Design, labour begins and starts slow (commonly), the waves ebb and flow and increase in strength and intensity over time with breaks in between, allowing your body to ease into the sensation. Once your cervix is fully dilated, a break and then you get to work with the surges to help bring your baby through the passage to be born. And then the surges stop, because there is no need for them any longer. But through it all, even if you want it to stop, it won’t. Because it has to keep going.

And then the midwife said the most beautiful thing. They said, “you are given sacred instructions” to keep working with the waves. Because even if you think you can’t, you can and you do.’

It is hard to imagine humans as primitive mammals, but we are. And just like mammals in the wild, we have wisdom in birth, we just have to trust that it’s within us.

“The last days of pregnancy - sometimes stretching to agonizing weeks - are a distinct place, time, event, stage. It is a time of in between. Neither here nor there. Your old self and your new self, balanced on the edge of a pregnancy. One foot in your old world, one foot in a new world.”

And I’m not talking about eye color.

Today is Blue Monday, which is a good day to talk about those baby blues. You know the ones, the days of sadness that can come after you’ve given birth…

If you haven’t given birth yet, you might be thinking, “sadness?! Why would I be sad? I just had a baby!” And you’re right. You’re right to expect that you might have that Hollywood moment of euphoria, but for many, it isn’t as quick.

About 80% of new parents can experience Baby Blues.

Symptoms can look like this;
💙 Restlessness or Anxiousness
💙 Impatince or grumpiness
💙 Crying or weeping for no reason
💙 Not feeling yourself
💙 Hard to focus or concentrate
💙 Mood swings
💙 Sadness

These symptoms can being within days of giving birth and usually go away within a few weeks on their own.

What causes it? I feel like it’s a bit of a perfect storm. You’ve just given birth (physical demand) your milk volume has increased and your baby is cluster feeding (changes in sleep or lack of) and most importantly you have a huge change in hormones-the biggest change you have in your life.

Rest and nourishment are keys to help you get over this hump.

If it lasts longer than two weeks or is more severe, reach out to your health care provider to be assessed for Postpartum Depression (PPD)

Some resources that can be helpful are Postpartum Support International
Or the Canadian Mental Health association

Friday the 13th and I’m thinking about superstitions. Old wives tales.

When it comes to pregnancy and birth, there is no shortage of those and no shortage of folks willing to share them.

What have you heard or tried? Was it true? I’d love to hear!

We have more in common than we think. Everyone is doing the best they can with the tools they’ve got. 💜

So you want to be a doula?
🤰🏻
It’s not uncommon for me to have folks reach out asking to chat about my work as a doula.
🤰🏻
I don’t think I have to tell you how much a I love this work, but I can’t meet everyone to chat about it, sadly.
🤰🏻
What I CAN tell you is that you do this work not for the money, but for the passion.

You do this work not because you love babies but because you want to support families.

You do this work not because you like a predictable one, but because you have the ability to be flexible and can think on your feet.

You don’t do this work without an incredibly supportive partner and reliable childcare (if you have your own children)

You don’t do this work by trying to heal your own experience or by trying to “save” people.

You don’t do this work by bringing in your own bias to someone else’s birth.

What you do get is to be invited into incredible experiences that will change you, challenge you and help you grow.

You will get to know a community like you’ve never known before.

You will meet birth workers with a passion who you can lean on.

If you want to be a doula, I’ve invited here in April to train a whole new group of doulas. We’d love yo have you.

Yesterday, I was interviewed by about any updates with the current situation regarding the OB shortage in our city.
💜
I don’t have to tell you there hasn’t been any changes. We haven’t gotten any new physicians open practices and I’m hearing from many of you that it has been difficult to find care.
💜
At the end of the interview I was asked if I had any optimism for the new year…
💜
Of course I’m optimistic, I’m a birth worker and if there isn’t anything more optimistic and hopeful than new life, I don’t know what is.
💜
The good news is that we DO have very skilled and kind Locum physicians in hospital. Some of our local midwives have been approved for some additional pre and postnatal care for low risk patients. And the doulas and childbirth educators are supporting families to be able to advocate for the birth they desire to have.
💜
It’s a new year and there is hope and optimism all around.

New Year’s Eve and oh, what a year.

This year finally had me able to return to in hospital births here in Lethbridge, and what a welcome!
🥰
To be back supporting families as they welcome new babes is an honor I’ll never take for granted.
🥰
I was able to teach in-person childbirth education classes to small groups and privately. I watched and listened as beliefs about birth became challenged and changed and some of you found a strength and trust in yourselves that has always been there.

Our city lost doctor after doctor and I advocated, and continue to advocate for you. My inbox is never quiet with folks who are expecting and without care-I promise to help you find someone to care for you and your baby.
💜
After 16 years doing birth work, I still found myelaf experiencing “firsts”-something that will continue because we all know how unique birth is.

I was asked to present at a youth career fair, introducing a whole new generation to this magical work.

Mother Nurture marked its first year in our new location.

And to say it all happened daily without struggle, or tears would be a lie. But I’ve never felt more comfortable in the discomfort of growth.

I am so thankful you’re here. I can’t do any of this without any of you.
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you
🙏🙏🙏
Wishing you and yours the best of health, happiness and all good things to come for 2023

As we look ahead to the year to come, I find myself reflecting on the year that is coming to an end.

This year was full of ups and downs and loads of firsts.

I certainly couldn’t do it alone and have so many folks surrounding me who helped along the way.

SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: Mother Nurture Massage & Doula Services

My name is Vicki Todd and I am the sole owner of Mother Nurture Massage and Doula Services. I have been practicing Massage Therapy here in Lethbridge for the past 15 years, a Birth Doula for 12 years and most recently, a Lamaze certified Childbirth Educator.

Supporting local business is a passion of mine whether it’s delicious coffee, music festivals, or record stores. I have two cats and 2 very active boys and very supportive partner who I finally (!) married in October in the beautiful Waterton Lakes National Park.

I love doing this work. This HEART work, this hard work. I am always humbled when I'm asked to join someone in their labour and birth. Whether it’s teaching infant massage or Lamaze, supporting a birth, or educating fathers about the process of birth so they can support their partners I am fully committed to making sure mothers and fathers understand birth and their babies. It has been an honor to work with the families of Southern Alberta over the years.
Got working on this wall hanging today. It is destined for the wall at Mother Nurture Massage & Doula Services and also will be available for sale.
What an amazing introduction to infant-massage class our Mom & Baby group had with Mother Nurture Massage & Doula Services this week!! Vicki was informative, funny, and oh-so caring, it was a wonderful class ❤️
