WHERE DID OSTEOPATHY COME FROM?
Dr. Andrew Taylor Still
(August 6, 1828 – December 12, 1917)
Founder of Osteopathy and Osteopathic Medicine
He was a physician, civil war surgeon, author, inventor, and Kansas territorial & state legislator, abolitionist, and advocate for equality pertaining to gender and race.
Common medical practices of his day included arsenic, castor oil, whiskey, and opium. Sanitation was also not regarded as a priority, wherein surgical practice caused more deaths than cures. After losing 3 children to spinal meningitis, Still concluded that the orthodox medical practices of his day were frequently ineffective and sometimes harmful.
Still was one of the first physicians to promote the idea of preventative medicine and the philosophy that physicians should focus on treating the disease rather than just the symptoms.
Still devoted the following years of his life to studying the human body and finding alternative ways to treat disease. Slowly building up his reputation, word spread about the doctor whose system of drugless, manipulative medicine (officially named "osteopathy" in 1889) was able to cure many apparently hopeless cases.
Enough people who wanted to learn his methods persuaded him to start a school. The American School of Osteopathy (ASO) was founded in Kirksville, Missouri in 1892. The first class had 5 women! and 16 men.
28 graduates in the first year, 100 graduates the following summer, and by 1900, an astonishing 700 students with a faculty of 18.
The school opened a new infirmary building in January 1895. By 1897, they had triple the size of the original building. More than 30,000 osteopathic treatments were given at the infirmary in 1895.
Vermont, North Dakota, and Missouri were some of the first states to legally licence the D.O. as Doctors of Osteopathy
Dr. Still passed away in Kirksville Missouri on December 12th, 1917.
