DEEP BREATHING ⁣

When I inquire with my clients about coping strategies that they use, I commonly hear from children and adults alike that they use deep breathing to calm themselves down. However, when I ask them to show me how they breathe, less than half are actually using their breath to stimulate the parasympathetic systemic (which is what enables us to calm down and feel relaxed).⁣

Common mistakes include breathing through the mouth (which can activate the stress response), breathing too quickly and inhaling for a longer period then exhaling. ⁣

So while it’s great to breathe deeply, because it is always accessible to us, in order to navigate difficult situations in life, to truly gain the benefits associated with breathing, we need to learn to breathe correctly.⁣

EARTH DAY⁣

I learned about the plight of Mother Earth when I was 8 years old and became a vegetarian, tree-hugger + ambassador for the a World Wildlife Project all in the same year. I also convinced my father to re-design my room into an environmental sanctuary 🍃 🌳 💧 ⁣

There was no doubt in my mind when I became a mother that the GREATEST gift I could ever give my children was a love, respect + adoration for all forms of life, including themselves.⁣

We have been exploring nature before my children were old enough to hold their own necks and now that they can run and frolic, they never seem to get enough. At least once a day, each of my boys will beg us to take them out.⁣

Although I am grateful for a day dedicated to Mother Earth, Earth day is everyday in our family. We love, cherish, celebrate + honour the planet we call home daily and we do this by being Kindful in every which way: not wasting, reducing/reusing/recycling/ repurposing when we can, buying consciously + sustainably and acknowledging the delicate balance of the ecosystem. After all, if we don’t leave behind a healthy home for our children to grow up in and take pride in calling their own, does anything else really matter? ⁣

Loving ourselves wholly and completely can seem like such an impossibility, especially when we rely on validation from others (whether we love them or not).⁣

While learning to release our need for validation from others is a work in progress for many of us, it can be helpful to remember that what often keeps others from seeing us + our progress is their own brokenness.⁣

As humans, what we see in others is most often a reflection~ dare I say an extension~ of ourselves. That said, those who are broken cannot help but see us as anything but broken.⁣

It’s up to us to see ourselves for who we really are and to validate not only our progress but our core selves.⁣

This is a part of my journey and practise that has taken more time and patience to develop, but without a doubt, it has been worth every effort because learning to see and love myself based on my own standards has allowed me to be more free than I ever imagined was possible.⁣

Do your little ones seem to catch a second wind right before bedtime? If they’re anything like my boys, they revvUP just in time for bed 🤦🏽‍♀️⁣

After much trial and error, we discovered some soothing activities that help them to get settled for the evening and ready for bed. We don’t complete every single activity on this list every night, but we do incorporate a few every night. The two things that are consistent for us on a nightly basis are reading stories 📚 and deep breathing:⁣

🛁 Warm baths followed by a relaxing massage⁣ (Deep Pressure works wonders for both my boys)
🎵 Dance Party (this may further stimulate some children but it helps my boys get their energy out and to wind down)⁣
🧸 Picking up toys + putting them away ⁣
🧘 Yoga poses (our bedtime favs include Child’s Pose, Mountain Pose, Star Pose) or a Guided Meditation ⁣
🎤 Bedtime Affirmations (check out my earlier post for ideas)⁣
🙏🏽 Recapping our day + discussing what we are grateful for⁣
🤗 Snuggling together

COURAGE ⁣

Fear is a natural + powerful human emotion. Fear alerts us to the presence of danger or the threat of harm, whether that danger is physical or psychological.⁣

Unfortunately, Fear can make it so difficult to follow our dreams + desires because change, failure, rejection and so many other worries cripple us from taking action.⁣

What is something that you are really wanting to do, but which fear is keeping you from doing? Ask yourself what your fear is telling you about yourself, your values and your priorities? Then think of one small step you can take today to get closer to developing the courage you need to overcome your fears and live your dreams.

You deserve it!⁣

Fear is a natural + powerful human emotion. Fear alerts us to the presence of danger or the threat of harm, whether that danger is physical or psychological.⁣

Unfortunately, Fear can make it so difficult to follow our dreams + desires because change, failure, rejection and so many other worries cripple us from taking action.⁣

LOVE + SELF-LOVE⁣

We all need others in our life who have our back, those special people who love us without fail or limit, who remind us on our toughest days that we are worthy and that we matter.⁣

For children, having adults who love them unconditionally helps them to develop self-love, a sense of self esteem, self worth and confidence.⁣

For adults who have grown up without the fulfillment of this need, there is an even greater onus to learn how to provide for this need in a self sufficient manner. This isn’t to say that we do not all deserve love from others, but it does mean that we are responsible for loving ourselves in the ways others may have failed to love us, as this sets the trend for how we expect others to love us moving forward.⁣

A practise of self-love and compassion was a critical part of my Kindfulness journey because it eventually carved a path for me to attract into my life the love I learned to cultivate for myself 💜⁣

I am Zahra, a Child & Family Therapist and Kindfulness Coach. The purpose in my passion is to guide children and adults on their journey towards finding the inner peace, self-awareness, confidence and focus required to create the life they dream of living.
