Confused about the role that gluten containing grains may (or may not) play in your IBS world?

Welcome to the club.

There is so much back and forth about gluten in digestive health discussions, and frankly most of us - the ones who are meant to be expert - talk out of both sides of our mouth on this one.

It has to be said that without exception, people who are diagnosed celiacs must avoid gluten, in food and in other areas such as medication, cosmetics, etc.

For those that have been found to have non-celiac (or non-wheat) gluten sensitivity, avoiding gluten or having gluten containing foods in small amounts may help alleviate symptoms as well.

In my opinion, outside of the above exceptions, those with digestive issues may want to consider limiting their consumption of gluten/ wheat products for a variety of reasons. However, I am a strong believer in the "portion is the poison" for many.

JY and I began working together last summer.

I remember feeling inspired by her decision to include me in her wellness plan. She had committed to herself that she was going to seek out and build a team of healthcare practitioners and advisors who could teach her how to achieve a greater sense of wellness and balance in her life. Improving her digestion was a key part of her journey.

I love her choice of words. "Validating" and "Sweet Spot", because, while her outcome was really great, they describe elements of her journey.

What does that even mean?

You hear me speak often about the work that I do to support clients who have issues with digestive function, unbalanced blood sugar, or calcium deficiencies.

Here's a headline for you - Prevention IS the Cure.

When you visit a holistic practitioner like myself, we would begin with a health and lifestyle 'audit'. With this information, I develop a nutrition and lifestyle plan designed to improve or support your current health status, and optimize your future state of wellness.

There's that word again.

There are many benefits to why you may consult with a nutritionist when it comes to managing chronic symptoms and improving your health outside of the doctor's office.

Here are THREE reasons why you may benefit from seeing a nutritionist:

Not all constipation is equal..
Are you constipated?
❓ Do I p**p every single day?
❓ Even when I do, does it feel like I’ve “emptied”?
❓ Do I have to strain to have a p**p?
❓ And then there are other markers like colour, consistency and size.
Here are some common root causes of constipation that I often see:
1. Dehydration. Yup. Most of you are chronically dehydrated. An average sized adult requires 6-8 8 oz glasses of water per day.
2. Low ( or high) fibre diet. Too little fibre can cause you to be constipated. The daily requirement is 25-35 g day. If you consume a lot of fruits and veggies you will be getting a combination of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Reminder: Not enough water with an increase in fibre can also be a cause for constipation. So, drink up and bulk up.
Try: oats, fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts and seeds.
3. Medications / Supplements.
Certain medications and supplements can cause constipation. There are a few other root issues relating to digestion - ie - thyroid issues, gallbladder function or removal, and SIBO. In any of these cases it’s best to consult with a professional to get advice on the best plan for you.
4. Stress. If you tuned in to the last Gut Health Gathering this past week you would have heard me discuss how stress can impact your digestive system. When your body is under any kind of stress, your body puts its energy into what is important at that moment… survival. Doing this actually tells your body to slow down/turn off digestion. It is no wonder many struggle with more issues during times of high stress.
5. Inactivity. This one can be often overlooked but if you aren’t moving, there is a chance your systems may be slow moving. Aside from all the other benefits of movement, it can help encourage proper blood flow to your digestive organs and get things going! It is no wonder you may feel the urge to ‘go’ during or after a workout, yoga or even some light walking!

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed about gut health by Dr. Heather Awad. Dr. Awad is a family doctor specializing in weight loss for menopausal women.

We had a fascinating chat about semaglutide meds being prescribed off label for weight loss. Meds like Ozempic are for diabetic patients. However, due to the fact that they slow down gastric emptying, thereby lowering insulin response, and diminishing appetite, they are often prescribed (off label) to patients wanting to lose weight.
Obesity is a recognized disease state.

In this discussion, Dr. Awad and I will discuss meds like Ozempic and she will share her perspective on why you should not take it for weight loss.

She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this discussion.

Funny story.
I met Diandra over 20 years ago at a mommy & baby class. We really got along well but never saw each other outside of that once a week class with our littles.

Fast forward to December 2023.
A woman calls me nearly in tears. Her doctor suggested she reach out to me because so far everything they had tried had not helped with her severe constipation.
Diandra explained that she was only having bowel movements once a week, was in near constant pain, was so bloated that none of her clothes fit, and was exhausted so much of the time that she was beginning to give up shifts at the physiotherapy clinic she worked at. She couldn't afford to miss work but was also having trouble doing her job due to her discomfort and exhaustion.

Diandra hires me and we get on our first zoom call and immediately realize that we already knew each other.

Between our first call in December and now ( 9 weeks) Diandra has gone from being painfully constipated to having near daily bowel movements.

I got this note from her today:
"Bonnie, I am so grateful that I hired you that day. Before I even realized it was you. Dr Moscovitch was right. You are a last stop.
Others may not understand but I have learned so much from our time together. I feel like a new person. I can't believe I had 5 p**ps this week. My sleep has improved too! There aren't words to thank you".

Constipation can be brutal. And stressful.

I use this little corner of web space to share tips and information to help you understand and manage your digestive issues.

I run Shift Nutrition and Wellness, a busy nutrition practice specialized in supporting people with functional digestive issues like IBS. I also provide support for Type 2 diabetics and those trying to manage their way out of pre diabetes .

I love spending time alone as much as with others. I do protect my alone time though. That's where some no's come in.

Currently really obsessed with starting my Mondays with a brillant Yin Yang yoga class, planning a trip to Ireland, and meeting my husband in the couch for Netflix binges ( it's winter!).

No doubt if you are struggling with IBS you have googled the heck out of it, asked your doctor, asked your friends, and taken a scroll through social media looking for any type of definitive answer regarding what you can and cannot eat in order to best manage your symptoms.

Here's the thing that we really want you to know...

The multifaceted nature of IBS suggests that it is influenced by a combination of factors, including:

Our individual physiology, psychology, dietary patterns, and genetics all contribute to digestive function (or dysfunction)

Because of the interplay of these various factors, IBS can manifest differently in different individuals, and the triggers or exacerbating factors may vary. This complexity makes it challenging to pinpoint a single cause or offer a one-size-fits-all solution for managing IBS.

Treatment often involves a multidisciplinary approach, addressing both physical and psychological aspects, and may include dietary modifications, stress management, medications, and other interventions tailored to the individual's specific symptoms and triggers.

When seeking help it is really important to find a practitioner who a) specializes in IBS, and b) takes a multi-faceted approach to treatment.

Joanna and I are both digestive health nutritionists who practice individually and across the world from one another, yet we are both successfully helping clients resolve long term digestive issues like IBS with a whole person perspective and a multi faceted approach that involves both food and lifestyle interventions AND enhancements.

Nutrition and food choices do play an important role, but continued elimination is not the answer.

The reality is that each of us has different food triggers, and the reason for that is because in general, food is not the issue - our capacity to digest food is the thing that we need to focus on to find true relief.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday break filled with peace, reflection and togetherness.

This CHOCO Matcha Latte is a Shift favourite.
Full of healthy antioxidants and chocolatey goodness.

-WHAT YOU NEED -
1 cup almond or other milk
2 tsp Matcha Vanilla green tea powder
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp cacao powder

-WHAT YOU DO-
Over medium heat, heat the almond milk and stir in Matcha powder. Stir until well combined. Pour into blender and add cinnamon and cacao powder. Blend together.

She is always on our minds, and in our hearts.
A dearly missed mother, grandmother, mother in law, sister, aunt, and friend.
She was the kindest and purest of heart.

Family holidays are the most wonderful. And...lets face it, they can also be the most stressful.
