What do you think of the concept of food as medicine?

To me it's both complete common sense and kinda radical.

In 2006 I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. I was among the fortunate ones - as I had access to a top oncologist and surgeon at Princess Margaret Hospital. This cancer was eradicated by a partial nephrectomy.

Always quite interested in the connection between diet and wellness ( also have a history of Crohn's Disease - in remission for 27 years), I was curious to learn what I could about cancer prevention and diet. Swipe to see the book I bought as I was leaving the hospital post surgery. became my bible. Certainly, this lead me to my interest in learning more about holistic nutrition and to this incredible second career as a Registered Holistic Nutritionist.

Here's my message-
Even as a cancer survivor, I do not take this to mean that every day must be 100% full of only the healthiest foods. To me, it means that each of us needs to find a balance for ourselves.

The truth is a standard North American diet is making us sick.

Plain and simple.

If you crowd out some of the not so good to make room for the better- you're doing a great thing.

Trying to include-
Berries
Green tea
Soy
Omega 3 fats
Citrus fruit
Dark chocolate ( yup)
- and maybe limiting your intake of sugar, highly processed and packaged foods is a great place to start.

What do you think?

FREE COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

If you have long-standing digestive issues, you have likely experimented with removing certain foods from your diet.

The low fod-map diet and a hypo-allergenic diet are two common approaches to food elimination.

Perhaps you, like so many of my clients, have tried one or the other. Perhaps you are still 'trying' it. I know that many 'try' this approach for years on end. Literally. And in many cases, symptoms abate, and things run smoothly for awhile, until you add some of these foods back into your diet , and all H. E. double hockey sticks breaks loose.

Do you know what these two 'diets' have in common? They are both intended to be diagnostic in nature. Meaning, they are not meant to be long term solutions.

Food elimination is a tool - one tool to help us evaluate what is actually happening for an individual, while offering some relief while we are still trying to determine the root cause of their problem. Digestive dysfunction can originate from so many different things - everything from the way you chew your food, the speed that you eat, when and how often you eat, what ratio of macronutrients you eat...etc. You get the picture.

Staying away from the foods that aggravate is often a frustrating endeavour because one day it's this and another it's that. In addition, long term elimination is not a good strategy for long term nourishment.

Eliminations provide important information, but you want to ensure that you know how to use food to heal, and how to broaden your diet as much as possible.

Join me at the next Great Gut Health Gathering, a workshop designed to help you better understand how to approach your gut healing journey, and why it's so important not to rely on food elimination as a primary strategy.

Save this delicious dip recipe!

EASY TO MAKE, DELICIOUS TO ENJOY and GREAT FOR YOUR GUT!

Talk about an easy way to add fibre to your day...

Try this dip with baby carrots, celery, cucumber, peppers, or with crackers. YUM

-WHAT YOU NEED-
1 2/3 cups broccoli
1 1/4 cup basil leaves
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
1 clove or tsp minced garlic
4 tbsp cold pressed olive oil
juice of 1/2 lemon

-WHAT YOU DO-
Place all ingredients into a high speed blender or food processor and pulse until you get a thicker texture.
Pop it into a clean glass jar and into the fridge.
Keeps in fridge for up to a week.
NOTE: For some with hypothyroidism - cruciferous veggies are best enjoyed cooked, rather than raw.

🔵DIGESTIVE DOT🔵

In the Shift Your Gut Method, we strive towards 3 specific goals when it comes to the nutrition aspect of gut healing:

1. +++Fibre

2. +++Variety

3. Consistency

While Standard American Diets (is it a coincidence that the acronym is SAD??) are already notably low in fibre. Plus, often people who struggle with long term and chronic digestive issues shy away from fibre based on experienced discomfort.

Yet, the evidence suggests the what is required for the healthiest possible gut function is an increase in the amount of plants that we consume each week. Plants provide dietary fibre.

The American Gut Project study is a gold standard study that involved over 15,000 participants. The study concluded that people who consumed 30+ different plants each week had a much more diverse and healthier microbiome (gut environment) than those that consumed 10 plants each week. The amount of plant food that you consume matters. It significantly improves gut vitality and overall health.

Does 30+ plants a week sound like a lot to you?

This dip already contains 6 plant types. If you have it with some cut up peppers, baby carrots, grape tomatoes and sliced cucumber... you're up to 10 plants in this one dish. A little goes a long way!

Will you add this dip to your snack or meal list this week?

Berries just don't get the recognition that they deserve.

A BERRY A DAY... or a serving of berries a day can really do wonders for your your gut health.

3 Reasons Why:

1. Rich in Fiber:
Berries, such as raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries, are excellent sources of dietary fiber. Fiber is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system as it promotes regular bowel movements, prevents constipation, and supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. A healthy gut microbiome is crucial for overall health, as it helps in digestion, nutrient absorption, and even supports immune function.

2. Antioxidant Power:
Berries are packed with antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, flavonoids, and polyphenols. These antioxidants help combat oxidative stress in the body, which can damage cells and contribute to various chronic diseases, including digestive disorders. By reducing inflammation and protecting cells from damage, antioxidants found in berries support gut health and contribute to overall wellness.
3. Prebiotic Properties:
Some berries, particularly those containing soluble fiber, act as prebiotics. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that nourish the beneficial bacteria in the gut. They serve as food for probiotics, the live microorganisms that promote a healthy gut environment.

By consuming berries regularly, you're not only getting essential nutrients but also supporting the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria, which can improve digestion and enhance overall health.

Confused about the role that gluten containing grains may (or may not) play in your IBS world?

Welcome to the club.

There is so much back and forth about gluten in digestive health discussions, and frankly most of us - the ones who are meant to be expert - talk out of both sides of our mouth on this one.

It has to be said that without exception, people who are diagnosed celiacs must avoid gluten, in food and in other areas such as medication, cosmetics, etc.

For those that have been found to have non-celiac (or non-wheat) gluten sensitivity, avoiding gluten or having gluten containing foods in small amounts may help alleviate symptoms as well.

In my opinion, outside of the above exceptions, those with digestive issues may want to consider limiting their consumption of gluten/ wheat products for a variety of reasons. However, I am a strong believer in the "portion is the poison" for many.

JY and I began working together last summer.

I remember feeling inspired by her decision to include me in her wellness plan. She had committed to herself that she was going to seek out and build a team of healthcare practitioners and advisors who could teach her how to achieve a greater sense of wellness and balance in her life. Improving her digestion was a key part of her journey.

I love her choice of words. "Validating" and "Sweet Spot", because, while her outcome was really great, they describe elements of her journey.

JY, has been an honour to be your fairy godmother. I hope that your inspiring words encourage someone else to take action and not settle for feeling less than their best.

Thank you for choosing me to be part of your team.

What is wellness?

What does that even mean?

You hear me speak often about the work that I do to support clients who have issues with digestive function, unbalanced blood sugar, or calcium deficiencies.

Here's a headline for you - Prevention IS the Cure.

When you visit a holistic practitioner like myself, we would begin with a health and lifestyle 'audit'. With this information, I develop a nutrition and lifestyle plan designed to improve or support your current health status, and optimize your future state of wellness.

There's that word again.

We all go about our daily lives, eating and doing the things that we have more or less always done. The thing is - small changes really do make a difference, and learning how to nourish yourself and create habits that support your best health is the key to optimal wellness.

Most of my clients invest ($$$) in this process willingly because they have often gotten to the point where they really have run out of choice.

Do you want to wait until you run out of choice?

Are you trying to get into a healthier groove for yourself, but not sure specifically what you need to do to get there?

Please reach out and book a complimentary call with me to find out how I can help you develop a long term wellness plan.

Also, just a reminder that my services may be covered by your extended health care, based on your particular plan details.

Check with your insurance provider for Registered Holistic Nutritionist coverage. I do provide official receipts.
If you find that they do not list Nutritionists, and only Registered Dieticians, please check with me as I have recently found that this requires a simple phone call or application process to ensure that may ensure you receive reimbursement coverage.

What can a nutritionist do for you?

There are many benefits to why you may consult with a nutritionist when it comes to managing chronic symptoms and improving your health outside of the doctor's office.

Here are THREE reasons why you may benefit from seeing a nutritionist:
🌱Clarity - When you are dealing with your own health struggles it can be incredibly overwhelming looking into all of the nutritional information out there. With all the different diets, rules, recommendations, trends and methods out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to start and to know what you will actually benefit from. A nutritionist will be able to w**d out the pseudoscience and provide you with informed recommendations that are customized to your needs, to help you start to feel better.
🌱Support - As nutritionists, we know there is not a one size fits all when it comes to health .Overall health includes taking a look at your diet and your lifestyle. Just changing your diet isn't enough to master overall health. Nutritionists are there to support you every step of the way. Being sick can be lonely. It can take some time and effort to dive into the root of the problem and begin to feel better. Having a nutritionist on your side can help support and guide you and provide assurance that you are not alone.
🌱 Accountability - Change does not happen overnight. You don’t start eating healthy for one day and miraculously resolve all your issues. It is not your short term actions but your long term ones that will help you get better and stay better. Consistency is what changes lives. It is the little things you do EVERYDAY that make the true difference in one’s health. Having a nutritionist in your corner can help provide realistic goals and recommendations to complement your unique lifestyle.
Are you ready to get clear and access some support and guidance?

03/22/2024

Not all constipation is equal..
Are you constipated?
❓ Do I p**p every single day?
❓ Even when I do, does it feel like I’ve “emptied”?
❓ Do I have to strain to have a p**p?
❓ And then there are other markers like colour, consistency and size.
Here are some common root causes of constipation that I often see:
1. Dehydration. Yup. Most of you are chronically dehydrated. An average sized adult requires 6-8 8 oz glasses of water per day.
2. Low ( or high) fibre diet. Too little fibre can cause you to be constipated. The daily requirement is 25-35 g day. If you consume a lot of fruits and veggies you will be getting a combination of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Reminder: Not enough water with an increase in fibre can also be a cause for constipation. So, drink up and bulk up.
Try: oats, fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts and seeds.
3. Medications / Supplements.
Certain medications and supplements can cause constipation. There are a few other root issues relating to digestion - ie - thyroid issues, gallbladder function or removal, and SIBO. In any of these cases it’s best to consult with a professional to get advice on the best plan for you.
4. Stress. If you tuned in to the last Gut Health Gathering this past week you would have heard me discuss how stress can impact your digestive system. When your body is under any kind of stress, your body puts its energy into what is important at that moment… survival. Doing this actually tells your body to slow down/turn off digestion. It is no wonder many struggle with more issues during times of high stress.
5. Inactivity. This one can be often overlooked but if you aren’t moving, there is a chance your systems may be slow moving. Aside from all the other benefits of movement, it can help encourage proper blood flow to your digestive organs and get things going! It is no wonder you may feel the urge to ‘go’ during or after a workout, yoga or even some light walking!

Well, have you?

Is this familiar to you?

You wake up, getting ready to start your day. You run back and forth to the bathroom hoping (even praying sometimes) that today is the day you will p**p. You don't. It's time to leave for work. You worry that you will spend your day running back and forth to the public bathroom there. Or you don't. Even if you feel the urge you hold it in. Or, you call in sick because you haven't gone to the bathroom in over 4 days and you dread the idea of an urgent need arising just when you are in the middle of a meeting with your boss!

If you can relate, you are not alone.

Scenarios like this are so common for so many. 65% of people with IBS report missing out on work/social/family events due to discomfort from symptoms like constipation. In fact, recent studies show that on average, an IBS sufferer misses 73 days/occasions each year due to their symptoms.

As a nutritionist, gut health specialist and creator of the proven Shift Your Gut Therapy Method, I know how possible it is for you to restore proper function and achieve daily bowel movements.

That's why I created the FREE Break The Bind workshop to help get things going...

If you want professional information and guidance join me LIVE on Zoom for a one hour comprehensive look at constipation and a 30 minute LIVE Q and A.

In this workshop, I will dig into:
• Common root causes of constipation
• Are you truly constipated? When to seek medical attention.
• Why having regular bowel movements is so important to your overall health.
• How to address and resolve constipation for once and for all
• Supplements that can be helpful for symptoms of constipation

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6 at 1 pm
There will be a recording made available. Q and A will not be recorded.

There are still a few spots available. Grab yours by clicking the link in my profile. Registration is required.

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed about gut health by Dr. Heather Awad. Dr. Awad is a family doctor specializing in weight loss for menopausal women.

We had a fascinating chat about semaglutide meds being prescribed off label for weight loss. Meds like Ozempic are for diabetic patients. However, due to the fact that they slow down gastric emptying, thereby lowering insulin response, and diminishing appetite, they are often prescribed (off label) to patients wanting to lose weight.
Obesity is a recognized disease state.

In this discussion, Dr. Awad and I will discuss meds like Ozempic and she will share her perspective on why you should not take it for weight loss.

She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this discussion.

This event will be broadcast LIVE in the Shift into Healthy Habits Facebook group, with an interactive opportunity for questions.

Any recording of this discussion will remain in this facebook group for replay.

Funny story.
I met Diandra over 20 years ago at a mommy & baby class. We really got along well but never saw each other outside of that once a week class with our littles.

Fast forward to December 2023.
A woman calls me nearly in tears. Her doctor suggested she reach out to me because so far everything they had tried had not helped with her severe constipation.
Diandra explained that she was only having bowel movements once a week, was in near constant pain, was so bloated that none of her clothes fit, and was exhausted so much of the time that she was beginning to give up shifts at the physiotherapy clinic she worked at. She couldn't afford to miss work but was also having trouble doing her job due to her discomfort and exhaustion.

Diandra hires me and we get on our first zoom call and immediately realize that we already knew each other.

Between our first call in December and now ( 9 weeks) Diandra has gone from being painfully constipated to having near daily bowel movements.

I got this note from her today:
"Bonnie, I am so grateful that I hired you that day. Before I even realized it was you. Dr Moscovitch was right. You are a last stop.
Others may not understand but I have learned so much from our time together. I feel like a new person. I can't believe I had 5 p**ps this week. My sleep has improved too! There aren't words to thank you".

Constipation can be brutal. And stressful.

That's why I just developed a new workshop to help you understand why it might be happening and what types of things you can do to fix it. Imagine everything being different just 9 weeks from now. If Diandra can do it, so can you.

Hello and happy Monday!

So many new faces here.
I wanted to pop in to say hi and I'm so glad you're here.

I use this little corner of web space to share tips and information to help you understand and manage your digestive issues.

I run Shift Nutrition and Wellness, a busy nutrition practice specialized in supporting people with functional digestive issues like IBS. I also provide support for Type 2 diabetics and those trying to manage their way out of pre diabetes .

I also developed and run a virtual group digestive health support program called The Shift Your Gut Therapy Method.

This space is especially for you.

I'd love to know what you'd like to see more of.

A bit about ME.

Besides my professional credz...

I'm a middle aged wife and mother who is currently grappling with what that "middle aged" piece means to me.

In general I love to say YES more than I enjoy saying no.

In a good way.

I love to learn something new every day.

I do my best to practice what I preach.

I love spending time alone as much as with others. I do protect my alone time though. That's where some no's come in.

Currently really obsessed with starting my Mondays with a brillant Yin Yang yoga class, planning a trip to Ireland, and meeting my husband in the couch for Netflix binges ( it's winter!).

Always obsessed with my 3 sweet daughters.

What are you obsessed with right now?

No doubt if you are struggling with IBS you have googled the heck out of it, asked your doctor, asked your friends, and taken a scroll through social media looking for any type of definitive answer regarding what you can and cannot eat in order to best manage your symptoms.

Here's the thing that we really want you to know...

The multifaceted nature of IBS suggests that it is influenced by a combination of factors, including:

Our individual physiology, psychology, dietary patterns, and genetics all contribute to digestive function (or dysfunction)

Because of the interplay of these various factors, IBS can manifest differently in different individuals, and the triggers or exacerbating factors may vary. This complexity makes it challenging to pinpoint a single cause or offer a one-size-fits-all solution for managing IBS.

Treatment often involves a multidisciplinary approach, addressing both physical and psychological aspects, and may include dietary modifications, stress management, medications, and other interventions tailored to the individual's specific symptoms and triggers.

When seeking help it is really important to find a practitioner who a) specializes in IBS, and b) takes a multi-faceted approach to treatment.

Joanna and I are both digestive health nutritionists who practice individually and across the world from one another, yet we are both successfully helping clients resolve long term digestive issues like IBS with a whole person perspective and a multi faceted approach that involves both food and lifestyle interventions AND enhancements.

Follow us here for this collaborative mini series as we share some insights around non-food interventions that will help you eliminate your IBS symptoms for good.
