PMS often causes sleeping problems. Women with PMS are at least twice as likely to experience before and during their period. Poor sleep may cause excessive daytime sleepiness and feeling tired or drowsy around their period.

2. Why does it affect sleep?
The menstrual cycle is divided into four phases: menstrual phase (first day of bleeding till 7th day) follicular (7th day to ovulation where the eggs grow) ovulatory (release of the egg) and luteal (after ovulation).
In the follicular phase, estrogen builds up until ovulation. Estrogen is almost like an energy supplement. Then at ovulation, around day 14, is suddenly kicked up another notch, and we see a tremendous number of sleep disturbances in women. After ovulation, your progesterone rises, "the soporific hormone, is the one that can make you drowsy. Then, just a few days before the start of your next period, estrogen and progesterone levels drop. And this is when many women have trouble sleeping.
