Melanin plays a crucial role in laser hair removal treatments because it acts as a target for the laser: the darker the pigment in your hair follicule is, the more effective the laser treatment will be.
Dark Hair
•Dark hair contains more melanin, which absorbs the laser energy more effectively.
•Because of the higher melanin content, laser treatments are generally more effective for individuals with dark hair. The heat generated from the absorbed laser light is sufficient to damage the hair follicle and inhibit future growth.
Light Hair
•Light hair (blonde, red, gray) has less melanin, making it less effective at absorbing laser energy.
•The reduced absorption of laser energy means that the treatment is less effective for light hair. Some lasers or light-based systems may not work well at all for light hair, requiring more sessions or alternative treatments.
*Some exceptions to the rule: in some cases, darker blond and red hairs can respond well to treatment. This is why it's crucial to have a consultation to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.
