HIV Disclosure Project Published here are articles, images, thoughts, humour, music and photographs which address the challenges of living with and disclosing HIV.

As a means of understanding obstacles which prevent people living with HIV from disclosing to potential sex partners this page is designed by and for the HIV community and allies, who contribute using humour, role play, stories, images, articles, photographs, videos and any other type of media to address stigma, fear, terminology which reinforces stigma on the dating scene and criminalization. The focus remains on educating the public about people living with HIV as we strives to promote tolerance, acceptance and understanding, on changing public perceptions of the reality of people living with HIV and to challenge the criminal justice system which criminalizes people living with HIV . Using this approach the goal is to empower individuals who are at potential risk when disclosing their HIV status, externalize stigma, and emphasize the importance of taking individual responsibility for ones’ own sexual health. When applying for a driver’s license, people often just tick the box that says, “Organ donor.”

For those with HIV, it’s a more thought-intensive process.

With a $630,000 grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Department of Nutrition and Public Health Sciences assistant professor Brittany Shelton is working to increase organ donation from people with HIV to other people with HIV.

“People with HIV can live long, healthy, and happy lives," shared Shelton. "As a result, people with HIV can donate their organs to others with HIV and they can do so safely.”

Sexual activities are perceived as risky behaviors among people living with HIV (PLWH), which leads to stigmatization. Today, effective treatment and the strengthened Undetectable=Untransmittable (U = U) message are supposed to be key in freeing PLWH from the fear of HIV transmission. We conduct...

🧬 Help Advance HIV Research

Are you living with HIV and taking daily HIV medicine (ART, treatment that helps control HIV in the body)? Even when HIV medicine is working, the virus can still hide in the body.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health are studying where HIV hides and how it behaves if treatment is paused for a short time under close medical supervision.

🩺 Study may include:
• Health exams and blood tests
• PET/CT scans
• Small tissue samples
• Careful monitoring by medical staff
✔ Adults living with HIV
✔ Taking stable HIV treatment with an undetectable viral load

Compensation provided for each study activity; total may exceed $1,870. Additional details available.
Your participation could help scientists better understand HIV and improve future treatments.

Kenya, Uganda and South Africa have been selected to prepare for the production of a new once-a-month HIV prevention pill.

The drug, called alimatravir (MK-8527), is being developed by MSD/Merck and is currently undergoing Phase 3 clinical trials.

Manufacturers selected in Africa are Universal Corporation Limited in Kenya, Quality Chemical Industries Limited in Uganda and Aspen Pharmacare in South Africa.

With support from Unitaid, the companies are preparing their manufacturing capacity early so they could produce the drug locally if trials are successful and regulators approve it.

The move could help make new HIV prevention medicines available faster in Africa while strengthening the continent’s ability to manufacture advanced medicines locally.

"In this analysis we explore the ethics of HIV phylogenetic research, the potential benefits and harms relating to its use, and the social risks that arise when conducting this research in rural settings in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa. We further draw lessons for the ethical conduct of phylogenetic methods to protect individuals and groups at risk of stigma and blame." (Phylogenetics in HIV is the study of how the virus evolves and spreads by analyzing its genetic changes over time.)

New research published in the Southern African Journal of HIV Medicine explores the ethical considerations surrounding HIV phylogenetics. HIV phylogenetic analyses provide insights into genetic relatedness and transmission patterns but cannot directly identify specific transmission events or the direction of transmission. However, if not well understood and handled carefully, phylogenetic results have the potential to harm individuals and groups. Participants acknowledged the benefits of using phylogenetics in HIV research, highlighting the importance of identifying transmission pathways in high-prevalence settings. However, consideration should be given to community members, with informed consent required.

“There are still no effective therapies that specifically prevent or mitigate ongoing brain injury,” said Ndhlovu, who is also a professor of immunology in neuroscience at the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute and a professor of microbiology and immunology at Weill Cornell. “Our goal is to close this critical gap by defining the mechanisms of brain injury and identifying new opportunities for targeted intervention.”

The discovery research center could uncover molecular markers that enable new diagnostics and lead to potential therapies for people living with neurological complications related to HIV.
