🌸 Happy International Women's Day!

This International Women's Day, we want to celebrate the powerful journey of recovery, growth, and self-empowerment. At Sööma,, we believe that every woman deserves to take up space — in her life, in her community, and in her own body.

Eating disorder recovery is not just about healing the body; it’s about reclaiming your right to exist fully, unapologetically, and without limitations. It's about learning to nourish yourself, respecting your needs, and embracing the fullness of who you are.

When women recover from eating disorders, they break free from the confines of restrictive thinking and open the door to a life where they can stand tall, claim their space, and live with intention and joy. It's a powerful reminder that our worth is not defined by a number or appearance, but by our inherent value as individuals deserving of love, respect, and care.

Today, we honor the courageous women on the journey to recovery and those who support them, including our dedicated and caring team of dietitians and psychologists. You are strong, you are worthy, and you deserve to take up all the space you need to grow.

Swipe to see how our team likes to take up space, live life to the fullest and embrace our hobbies and passions!

💖 To every woman embracing her full potential — we are here for you.

🤔 Thinking of booking an appointment with us and wondering what to expect for the evaluation and follow-ups?

📝 Here is a brief summary of the key differences of each type of appointment in addition to what sets Sööma apart from other clinics.

🔎 Sööma values who you are as an individual, your story and how your experiences have impacted your relationship with food and your body. Instead of just asking “What are you doing and what do you want to change”, we explore (alongside of you) why you developed this relationship to food and your body, how it's impacting the way you want to experience life and the barriers that come up in trying to move towards a different way of relating to food.

☎️ If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us by phone or email!

_____

📊 Eating disorders are psychological illnesses that affect around 3% of Canadians.

❓ Yet all efforts to control weight can elicit physiological responses from the body.

➡️ These coping mechanisms can lead to intrusive thoughts around food, a perceived inability to control intake and a perceived failure to maintain a lower weight.

😞 Dieting culture often encourages restrictive behaviors, leading to overeating and cyclical weight trends. If you feel your self-worth is tied to your figure, weight and food choices, you may have a disordered relationship with food.

📲 Start working on your relationship with food by calling or emailing us to book your first appointment.

👉 We hope you enjoy some more memes that we've rounded up about diet culture and eating disorder recovery !

💞 This post’s goal is to hopefully add some humor and lightheartedness to your feed, and not at all to diminish your experience or recovery process if you are currently struggling.

👩‍⚕️ If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, make sure to contact us and schedule an appointment with an eating disorder specialist.

🌟Have you ever heard of radical acceptance?

👉 Radical acceptance is a DBT-based therapy in which you accept life as it is rather than resisting what you cannot change (Linehan 1993). Instead of mentally fighting what is unfair, stressful, or difficult in your life, you embrace the fact that “it is what it is 🤷‍♀️.”

💫 Here we explain the role of radical acceptance in eating disorders and work through some examples in your life where radical acceptance may be applicable and necessary.

🌸 If you need support in recovering from your eating disorder, please reach out to our clinic at [email protected] or 514-437-4260.

This week, we’ve shared information, resources, and insights about how Sööma embraces possibilities by providing innovative and evidence-based approaches. 💡

If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, know that you're not alone, and there are many resources available to help. 💙 In addition to the support we offer at our clinic, here are a few trusted organizations that provide valuable resources, information, and treatment options:

🔹 National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA): A comprehensive resource offering a helpline, support groups, and educational materials to help you understand and manage eating disorders. 📞

🔹 National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC): Provides information, resources, and support for those affected by eating disorders in Canada. 🇨🇦

🔹 ANEB Québec: A Quebec-based organization offering support, treatment, and resources in both French and English, dedicated to helping individuals in their recovery journey. 🇫🇷🇬🇧

🔹 BACA: A multidisciplinary clinic offering comprehensive treatments for eating disorders. 🏥

🔹 AMI-Québec: An organization offering support for mental health, including eating disorders, through a range of resources and peer-led programs. 🧠💬

🔹 National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC): Provides a range of resources for both professionals and those affected by eating disorders, focusing on education and access to care. 🌐

As Eating Disorder Awareness Week (EDAW) comes to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on the power of community, education, and innovation in transforming the landscape of eating disorder care. ✨ This week, we’ve shared valuable insights on inclusive treatment models, and their importance in recovery. We've also highlighted how trauma-informed care, gender-affirming practices, and specialized approaches for athletes and neurodivergent individuals can make all the difference in healing. 💪🌱

Remember, whether you're just beginning your journey or supporting someone else, there is always hope, and recovery is possible, even if you do not feel ready. 💖

Wonder what makes Sööma different from other treatment centers and dietitians? 🤔

Our team offers a multidisciplinary approach, with the option of working with a dietitian AND/OR psychologist specializing in eating disorders, disordered eating, and sports nutrition. 🧠

Our dietitians help clients normalize their eating habits and are trained in several therapeutic modalities to understand and explore the thought patterns and emotions that contribute to a disordered relationship with food. 💭🍽️

Our dietitians stay focused on food and body image, meaning they can explore:

The origin of certain beliefs, thoughts, patterns, and behaviors related to food 🍏
The impact those beliefs had on you in the past ⏳
How they affect you today 🕒
And what you'd like your relationship with food to be like going forward 🌱
From there, our dietitians provide personalized nutrition education, support, and structure to challenge unhelpful beliefs and encourage healthier eating habits. 🍴💪

Our psychologists can dive into non-food factors that influence your eating habits. They can help you unpack and understand mental health challenges or other behaviors that impact your relationship with food. 🧠💬

Unsure of who to work with? Reach out to us by phone 📞 or email 📧 to learn more.

Stay tuned for our final EDAW post tomorrow! 📅✨

📖 As dietitians specializing in eating disorders, disordered eating and sports nutrition, we undergo comprehensive and diverse training to ensure we provide the best care for each individual.

Here’s a deeper look into our specialized training:

✨ Trauma-informed care: We prioritize creating a safe, compassionate space where healing can occur. This means we approach every client with sensitivity and understanding that trauma can deeply influence eating behaviors and overall well-being.

✨ Therapeutic modalities: We are trained in several evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Family-Based Therapy (FBT)
Internal Family Systems (IFS)

✨ Gender-affirming care: We understand the importance of respecting and supporting every individual’s gender identity. Our approach is inclusive, and we tailor care to meet the unique needs of those exploring or affirming their gender, ensuring everyone feels seen and valued.

✨ Athletes & eating disorders: We recognize that athletes face unique pressures when it comes to performance, body image, and food. Our training helps us address the intersection of sports and eating disorders, so we can help athletes nourish their bodies to perform at their best while maintaining mental and physical well-being.

✨ Neurodivergence and eating disorders: We are trained to work with individuals who are neurodivergent, recognizing that conditions like autism, ADHD, and others can impact one’s relationship with food and eating behaviors.

✨ Harm reduction: We embrace a harm reduction approach, which means meeting clients where they are in their journey and focusing on minimizing the negative impact of eating disorder behaviors without requiring immediate full abstinence. This approach fosters a non-judgmental, flexible environment where small steps toward recovery are celebrated.

…and so much more!

We’re so excited to announce that Jamie was recently a guest speaker on the All Bodies. All Foods. Podcast!! 🎙️✨

This episode dives into the challenges of managing chronic health conditions while also navigating an eating disorder. Conditions like autoimmune disorders, celiac disease, and food allergies are already tough enough to handle, but when paired with an active eating disorder, it can feel overwhelming to make food choices. 😔🍴

Conflicting nutrition messages can lead to fear, rigidity, and confusion, making it hard to embrace even basic principles like “all foods fit.” In this episode, Jamie discusses these layered struggles and offers practical strategies to support anyone facing this. 💡💚

Whether you're personally dealing with these challenges or supporting someone who is, this conversation is a powerful reminder that help is available—and you don’t have to face it alone. 🌟
