Dogs are highly interactive animals, and their communication is rooted in body language! A wagging tail usually indicates that a pup is excited or happy. It can also mean intimidation or aggression if their tail is more vertical and not wagging. Learning how your dog communicates can be useful during their interactions with other animals and humans!

Your pup needs regular brushing of their coat to keep it shiny and glossy regardless of their breed. The amount of weekly brushing depends on the length and texture of your dog’s coat. Longhaired breeds such as collies or golden retrievers require more frequent brushing – at least once a week, if not every other day. Shorthaired breeds may only need a good brushing every other week. Badly matted hair causes pain and can result in skin infections if dogs lick or bite the source of irritation. Grass seeds can hide inside a matted coat and can even burrow into the skin causing an abscess.

Is everything in a dog’s world black and white? The idea that dogs can’t see colour was widely accepted for decades, but new research and conclusions about canine anatomy and behaviour have shown that while dogs can’t see the same colours humans do, dogs can still see some colours. This means the best toys for your dog may be those in blue and yellow hues.

The cat righting reflex is how cats’ bodies naturally right themselves during a fall. Since cats have no collarbones and extremely flexible spines, they use their superior vestibular (inner ear/balance) systems to figure out which way is up. Once the head is oriented in the right direction, the rest of the body twists to follow suit.

Also known as the zoomies, both cats and dogs experience FRAPs, but different circumstances are more likely to trigger the behaviour in one species than in the other. Feline FRAPs most often occur at dawn and dusk, though activities like grooming and using the litter box may inspire them at any hour. When does your pet have its FRAPs?

Birds are also attracted to certain colours as well! With some observation and careful planning, you can avoid upsetting your bird with specific hues while also providing enrichment with others. Ever notice your kitty scratching around on the carpet or other furniture? There are actually a few reasons as to why cats scratch the objects they do! They do this to sharpen their claws, exercise, mark their territory, or simply get your attention. The next time you wonder why your kitty is scratching everything but their scratcher - refer back to these few facts!
Cat behavior may seem totally random to us, but there is a method to the madness. For example, cats release low meows when they are irritated or ready to defend themselves. If your cat kneads you, it means they feel comfortable around you. Contrarily, when a cat twitches his ears, it means he is agitated or feeling anxious. Contact us if you notice any unfamiliar behavior from your furry companion!
Pets provide us with an influx of positive energy that is truly indescribable. Specifically, there are four important ways that pets provide positive energy that all pet owners should be thankful for. Make sure to reciprocate their love by keeping them happy and healthy!
