My Shelter Adoption Story With Cassian
I helped start Second Chance Animal Shelter while I was in practice, and the name was exactly right. It was rewarding and hard. We couldn’t adopt out every pet, some came in sick, and some adoptions didn’t work out. But when one did, everyone won, like with my cat Cassian.
My wife Catherine spotted Cassian on Petfinder and said, “I love him already.” He’d been returned to the shelter after a first home where another cat didn’t like him and he reportedly urinated in the house. That can sound like a red flag, but context matters, and at the shelter he was affectionate and just wanted to be loved.
He needed about 3 weeks to warm up and spent many days hiding under a chair, so we gave him space and didn’t force him. Then his personality came through. He never had a litter box problem with us, rubbed up against our not-so-confident dog Tula, and quickly became the boss. Not assistant boss. The boss.
If you adopt, expect an adjustment period. Your pet may hide, act shy, avoid handling, need space from other pets, or act differently than at the shelter. That doesn’t mean the adoption has failed, they may just be adjusting. Ask yourself first if you have the time and patience, and whether you’re ready for possible health needs.
Shelter pets often seem to know they’ve been given a second chance, and every adoption makes room for another pet in need. Pet parents may have lower stress and better heart health too.
Cassian gets omega-3s daily for his mild allergies and itching. They’re one of the most studied supplements in veterinary medicine and may help with allergies, arthritis, immune support, and cognitive function. His is Dr. Jones’ Ultimate Omega 3 Formula, a krill oil.
There may be a Cassian out there for you.
