your small dr. pal here with a friendly reminder that just because something is natural does not mean it’s safe or appropriate for you; natural medicine is medicine & should ideally be prescribed by a health care provider with extensive training in neutraceticals / nutrition / herb drug interactions / pharmacology - I've seen way too many new patients this week on self-prescribed or instagram-recomended supplements that are; useless, harmful for them based on their health history, or interact negativly with their other meds or vitamins

🌱💊 can get really complicated, especially when you’re mixing supplements / herbs which is why NDs spend a minimum 4 years studying natural medicine at a graduate level + need to pass 3 board exams & continue training yearly in order to maintain our licences. teas & low dose vitamins are likely safe for you to experiment with at home, otherwise it’s best to work with a professional 🤍

making all of my favourite summer recipes over the new few weeks (we still have 2 weeks left! plus, summer is an attitude not a date, am I right?) - inspired by a pre-pandemic trip to Portugal (& a wonderful cooking class with @chezesteves) these clams taste like summer in a bowl & remind me of a sunny day in Lisbon;

- 1.5 lbs small clams
- 3 tbs olive oil
- 10 large cloves of garlic (crushed, with the skin left on)
- 1 small bunch of cilantro or parsley
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1 cup vinho verde
- 1 lemon, juiced + 1 tsp zest

heat a large dutch oven over medium heat & add the olive oil + crushed garlic, stirring frequently for approximately 5 minutes, drain & rinse your clams then add them to the garlic, cook until all of the clams open. Once the clams are fully cooked add the herbs, wine, lemon juice + zest, salt & stir gently until well combined. Serve with a cold glass of your remaining vinho verde (speaking of 2:00pm wine … a reminder I’m currently out of the clinic for the week & will be back to my inbox / office next Tuesday) 🧄✔️

lamb + squash tagine 〰️ this recipe came to me last week while I was feeling a little sorry for my cooped-up self. I had big plans for this year; Bali for a 2 week plant-based chef certification, a few weeks in Mexico to work on (finish) my book, & a glorious week in Morocco. While 2020/2021 had other plans for my wander-lusty soul I can’t see the world this year I can still cook it!

This lamb + squash tagine recipe takes advantage of spring’s favourite protein lamb, & tastes just like a trip to Morocco (I think). Recipe link in profile

"Consistency is the playground of dull minds (& poor gut health)" - Yuval Noah Harari (+ me).

One of the most important things you can do to positively influence the good microbes in your digestive system is to eat as many different plants as possible - one of my 2021 goals is to eat a minimum of 30 different plants weekly for the sake of the little bugs in my gut that control almost every aspect of health (from hormone health, to immunity & even mood) - while this sounds like it could be a difficult feat it's actually quite easy when you include herbs, & herbal teas. I add fresh herbs from my window garden + dried herbs from my backyard summer bounty to almost everything I cook & I drink 3 - 4 cups of herbal tea daily (rooibos, peppermint, nettle & lemon balm are staples) ✔️

Pesto is another great way to get some extra herbs & plants in; today I’m heading back to my secret wild leek patch to grab some leaves for ramp pesto to go with a lamb tagine tonight 🌱 wishing you all a wonderful plant-filled weekend from this doctor’s kitchen

you guys were really (!!!!) interested in my fava bean hummus recipe from my story the other day, ask & you shall receive;

- 1 cup fava beans, shelled
- juice from 1 lemon
- ¼ cup olive oil
- ¼ cup tahini
- 2 large cloves garlic, grated
- salt + pepper to taste

the hardest part of this recipe is prepping the beans, pop them out of the pod & drop into a pot of boiling water to blanch for 30 seconds, remove, place in an ice bath & remove the outer skin - add ingredients to a food processor & blitz until creamy ✔️
