ON Government’s DI Wait List Plan | Ontario Association of Radiologists

Ontario radiologists strongly welcome today’s Ontario Government announcement to take steps to significantly reduce CT, MRI, and surgical wait lists across the Province as a tangible demonstration of its patient care commitment. This priority announcement recognises that diagnostic imaging is a fundamental gateway for patients who need an early diagnosis to access surgery and other life-saving treatments.

“Premier Ford and Health Minister Elliott’s Wait List Action Plan will direct necessary health care resources to have the most impact on patients across our province”, said Dr. David Jacobs, President of the Ontario Association of Radiologists (OAR). Radiologists will be working closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure that the 75,000 additional CT/MRI operating hours will optimise patient care outcomes.

Without a diagnosis, there is no cure.

Hundreds of thousands of Ontario women face breast cancer screening delays due to COVID-19 disruptions.

“Unfortunately, we’re already seeing more people coming in with (breast cancer) cases at a higher stage because they’ve delayed screening,” Seely said. “We know this will cost thousands of lives from breast cancer, with delays of more than six months.” Dr. Jean Seely

'NOT A PRIORITY GROUP': Ontario radiologists being shut out of COVID vaccinations

The OAR is receiving a large number of calls from all corners of the province expressing deep concern about the lack of access to Covid vaccinations for radiologists and technologists working in high-risk situations.

Many reported they have been told they are not currently eligible to be vaccinated for the foreseeable future. Contradictory messages in various health regions around the province have made it difficult to impossible for radiologists and the technologists to get vaccinations even though they are dealing with confirmed or suspected Covid patients each day. For example, Peel Region has specifically excluded radiologists in the community and many technologists have been turned away at vaccination centres saying they are at a lower priority than clerical staff in family physician offices.

The Current for Feb. 9, 2021 | CBC Radio

Fewer women are going for mammograms because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that has experts worried about the long-term implications.

Dr. Jean Seely, radiology professor at the University of Ottawa and head of the breast imaging section at the Ottawa Hospital, and Dr. Aisha Lofters, a physician with the Women's College Hospital in Toronto discuss how the drop in screenings could increase the risk of death among women.

Today on The Current: COVID-19’s impact on routine breast cancer screening; vaccine concerns in South Africa; and why humans may not be designed for exercise on a treadmill.

Read the Ontario Association of Radiologists and Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences Position Statement on COVID-19 Vaccinations in Ontario’s Medical imaging Independent Health Facilities.

The OAR and OAMRS strongly recommends that the Ontario government officially include all Independent Health Facility imaging physicians, residents, fellows, medical imaging technologists and staff in the Phase 1 vaccination prioritization program to ensure equitable safety and access for critical health care professionals and their patients. A similar approach should be addressed in other areas of our health care system where such gaps exist and/or differences have been identified in the approach already adopted by other provinces.

Wait times for diagnostic tests climb in Manitoba after pandemic prompted spring shutdown.

Wait for some tests has quadrupled after non-urgent procedures were cancelled in March due to pandemic.

The wait times for diagnostic procedures like mammograms, MRIs and CAT scans are ballooning across the province in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, with parts of rural Manitoba among the regions hit hardest.

Ontario Government includes Non-Emergency DI in Hospitals and IHFs in Stage 1 Recovery Announcement.

A significant amount of OAR background work and communications with government has facilitated the commencement of radiology service delivery so that it would be included in today’s Ford Government announcement. Ontario radiologists can be assured that important work on behalf of our specialty has been heard and this will continue to happen as we prepare to provide a soon-to-be-released initial guide on the resumption of DI services premised on safety for staff and patients.

In Memoriam – Anne Parsons, OAR CME & CBMD Program Director.

It is with great sadness that we advise members that long-time OAR employee, Anne Parsons passed away this past week after a long and brave struggle with cancer. Anne will be known to hundreds of radiologists and technologists as the driving force who organised the OAR’s CME program from its inception with about 15,000 attendees and hundreds of hours of excellent programming.

Anne was also integrally involved in the development of the OAR’s Canadian Bone Mineral Densitometry Program accrediting DXA sites and later the BMD CME program for radiologists and technologists. Between these two spheres of activity, Anne was a very special person who touched many colleagues across Ontario and Canada.
