πŸƒ Back to Basics - Movement πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

When talking about your health, lifestyle is the other side of the coin and that includes incorporating movement every day, throughout the day.

🚬 "Sitting is the new smoking" 🚬

You may have heard this expression being cited many times in the past few years. Many of us have jobs that have us glued to our desk staring at a computer. Our bodies were made to move, not to sit for long periods of time. So it's time to get up and "move it".

All our practitioners promote movement with their patients and clients as part of their overall health. Their #1 recommendation?

✨ Walking ✨

If we are talking basic movement, then we are all about walking, especially outside in green spaces. Numerous studies show the benefits of walking for your physical, mental and emotional health.

Turning your movement into a fitness routine is also important. Any good fitness regimen will include 3 things:

πŸ’ƒ Cardio - your heart is a muscle that needs to be strengthened like any other.
πŸ’ͺ Strength - this is even more important as we age.
πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Flexibility - to maintain good posture and good range of motion in your joints.

What is the best activity?
It is the one that you enjoy doing. This way you know you will stick with it. Think of what you liked to do as a kid.

Here are a few of our favourites:
🌿 hiking
🚴 cycling
πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ yoga
πŸƒrunning
πŸ„β€β™€οΈ paddleboarding
🐾 walking with our dogs
πŸ’ͺ strength classes
🌷gardening
πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ swimming
⛹️‍♂️ playing outside
πŸ’ƒ dancing
β›³ golfing
β›· skiing
️❄️ snowshoeing
πŸ₯Œ curling
β›Έ skating

Just choose whatever works for you. Joining a fitness group will help keep you motivated and connected.

And don't forget tp take frequent breaks during your workday to get up and walk around...or even better, invest in a standing desk so you can change your position frequently.

Just remember to "MOVE IT".

πŸ’§ Nutrition Basics - Drink Water πŸ’§

When we talk nutrition at C'est La Vie Wellness, we always start with hydration. Are you drinking enough water?

Water is the essence of life. Our bodies are 2/3 water. According to doctors, 75% of Americans may be suffering from chronic dehydration 😳

An average adult loses approximately 10 cups of water every day, just by breathing, sweating and urinating. So you need to replenish those fluids. It can be from water, juices, herbal teas, soups, smoothies, and food.

How much water you need depends on your gender, your size, your activity level, your age, your health and the climate you live inβ˜€οΈ. On average, we need 2 litres of water a day.

πŸ’§ 5 Reasons Why You Need to Drink Water πŸ’§

😊 Not just a pretty face: Defy aging by keeping your skin plump and moist… and keep them guessing!

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈA spring in your step: Water lubricates joints and moistens tissues making every step a joyous event.

πŸƒFit and trim: Water boosts your metabolism and may curb hunger. Bye bye cravings!

πŸ’¦ Clean lean machine: Get rid of toxins by promoting good elimination and keep your kidneys happy.

⚑️Whiz kid: Water increases your energy and your cognitive ability, so get out that Trivia game and dazzle everyone with your happy brain!

Need a little help to remember to drink water? Here are our top 3 tips!

Tip #1:
πŸ’§Fill a big jug of water in the morning and aim to drink it all by the end of the day.

Tip #2:
πŸ’§Put elastics around your water bottle. If you aim to drink 2 litres and your water bottle contains 500 ml, then put 4 elastics around it. Every time you refill the bottle, remove one elastic.

Tip #3:
πŸ’§Put an alarm on your phone/watch/FitBit for every 30 minutes. Drink every time it rings!

For more information about water, check our our blog "Water, The Essence of Life" on our website. If you need more support, consider working with one of our practitioners.

πŸ₯‘ Back to Basics - Nutrition πŸ₯‘

When it comes to health, your overall diet is a crucial part of the equation. However, it doesn't have to be complicated.

Here are the 5 basic nutrition principle that we follow at C'est La Vie Wellness. This can be tweaked according to what your body needs at different times in your life.

Principle #1:
πŸ’§Hydrate: our bodies are 2/3 liquid so staying hydrated will mean that all your body systems are working optimally. Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake. Opt for filtered water, herbal teas, or green juices instead.

Principle #2:
🫐 Eat Whole Foods (mostly plants): this will ensure you are getting the maximum amount of nutrients for your body and that you are avoiding processed foods.

Principle #3:
βš–οΈ Balance it Out: Make sure to include healthy fats, healthy protein, and lots of fibre at every meal and snack. This will keep you satiated between meals and will provide your body with all the macronutrients it needs.

Principle #4:
πŸ§‘β€πŸ³ Cook From Scratch: When you make your own meals, then you control what goes in every dish. You also get to choose the best ingredients for yourself and your loved ones.

Principle #5:
🍭 Be Sugar-less: Reducing or eliminating refined sugar and refined carbs from your diet will reap so many health benefits, as much for your physical health as for your mental health. Need some help? Consider our 21-Day Sugarless in the Kitchen Online Program (see link in bio).

That's it! If you can follow these 5 principles, then you are on your way to optimum health and wellbeing. If you need a little support with your nutrition goals, consider booking a 15-min chat with one of our nutritionists LyneD - Foodie Helen Kwon or with our naturopath Dr. Sofie Desforges-Bell, ND

🍎 Nutrients to Support Sleep 🍎

There is no doubt that nutrition and sleep are closely intertwined. Going to bed hungry or too full can impact the quality of your sleep. It is usually recommended to stop eating a couple of hours before bedtime to ensure a sound sleep.

If you struggle with the quantity and quality of your sleep, you may want to incorporate more of these foods into your diet.

(Note that you should avoid a diet high in sugar and refined carbs as it can negatively impact the quality of your sleep).

πŸ’ Melatonin foods: bananas, black beans, chickpeas, oats, oranges, pineapple, tart cherry juice.

πŸ— Tryptophan foods: almonds, dates, eggs, millet, potatoes, poultry, sea vegetables, tofu/soybeans.

β˜•οΈ Sleepy teas: chamomile, ginger, lavender, lemon balm, passionflower, peppermint, valerian root, turmeric.

πŸ₯‘ Healthy Fat Foods: avocados, walnuts, flaxseeds, mackerel, nut butter, olives, pumpkin seeds, salmon, sunflower seeds, tuna.

🌰 Magnesium Foods: cacao, kelp and sea vegetables, mackerel, nuts, seeds, spinach, tofu, & whole grains.

πŸ«’ Fermented Foods: kefir, kimchi, kombucha, miso/natto, olives, pickles, tempeh, and yogurt.
