We don't have to give up on being active, we just have to slightly adjust at home!
.
So, my first recommendation is for you to look into and try this app out: Peloton. Not just for spin, but for running, yoga, meditation, strength, bodyweight cardio and strength training, core training... FREE for 90 days.

Why not save time and double your workout benefit by combining Spin® with key upper body exercises to take your workouts to the next level?

This week (and for the next week) we are focused on **Climbs** for strength training & endurance, as well as **Arms & Core** - for a total body workout...
.
We use lightweight dumbbells (2.5lbs-5lbs) with high reps to target key muscles on the upper body. And all the while, engaging our core to fire up our abs, too.

4 Signs You’re Pedaling Too Fast in Spin Class | MapMyRun

Let's talk about riding "fast" in spin class.
.
You ALWAYS want to ride with resistance. Never have so little resistance that: (1) you're bouncing on the saddle (at high speeds), or (2) you're free-spinning at lower speeds (meaning you're pedalling with zero resistance).
.
You want to make your workout count (not to mention have a safe ride) - and that means having some feeling of "drag" on the wheel, mimicking the outdoor terrain.
.
Having the appropriate resistance, means YOU are in control of the bike - and not the other way around.
.
"Cadence above 120 rpm often lacks the appropriate resistance, which means leg muscles are not optimally recruited, leaving you with an elevated heart rate without a lot of ground covered compared to when you pedal slower with more resistance."

"Adding resistance gives your muscles something to work with and allows you to own the circumference of your pedal stroke (...) This could slow your cadence down slightly, however, it will eliminate the rocking, and generate POWER in the process."

We start with a warm-up and progress through a variety of terrains, from flats, to hills, to mountains – and everything in between. It is a 60-min class, where we literally ride **everywhere** on a bike that goes **nowhere**... With you in control of your resistance, it is suitable for riders of all ages and fitness levels.

Let's talk about footwear for spin class, shall we?
.
If riding in the cages, stiff-soled, athletic shoes work best. Laces should be double-knotted and tucked in (so as not to get caught in the pedal crank). The ball of the foot must rest directly over the center of the pedal with the toe strap pulled snug. Soft-soled shoes are less effective because they flex over the pedal, reducing efficiency and potentially leading to foot numbness.
.
If clipping in, the ideal choice is to wear cycling shoes with the cleats shown in this image. Cycling shoes have very stiff soles, breathable fabric, and usually have velcro or buckles instead of laces.
.
Riding with cycling-specific shoes have a number of benefits. They (1) provide improved performance due to greater efficiency in the transfer of power; (2) provide a more balanced use of the quadriceps and hamstrings, giving stability to the knee and reducing foot movement; (3) provide more stability, reducing strain on the Achilles tendons and calf muscles. All this translates into you being able to push heavier load during your workout!

I am a huuuuge fan of using heart rate monitors during your workout. Think of it as your very own personal trainer - motivating you and keeping you honest in your workout.

The heart rate monitors I recommend are the ones that give you instant live feedback. So you pair it with your phone and check your effort through the workout.
.
The one I use is a chest strap (Polar brand) that I connect up with the FITIV app (below).
.
Check out Monday's CycleFit class. Nothing short of a fabulous HIIT workout. (I slept like a log that night!)

Formalized the contract, today. It's official!

I'm thrilled to be back in the saddle teaching Spinning. My sabbatical was brief, but a welcome reset! My new home is at the Headwaters Racquet Club, right here in Orangeville.
.
It had been 8 years of teaching pre-choreographed classes. Now, I get to lead the class with my own program. Certified for the past 8 years in Schwinn, RPM and Spinning programs, I'm uber-excited to run my very own class that has my DNA imprinted to it!
.
Start date: October 1st.
.
Excited to meet new riders. And maybe, one day, some of my old crew, too.
