Dr. Emilio Alarcon holds several prestigious positions at the University of Ottawa Heart institute including Scientist, Associate Professor, and Director of the Bio-nanomaterials Chemistry and Engineering Laboratory. Since his time at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Alarcon has published over 83 articles in peer-reviewed journals, several book chapters, and edited two books on regenerative medicine and nanomaterials.
 
Dr. Alarcon research focuses on the development and translation of new materials with regenerative capabilities in the heart and other systems. Dr. Alarcon will be discussing some of his recent studies where he demonstrated that spraying of tiny particles of gold may treat heart disease!

Doug Goertzen is a co-founder of Kardium. Prior to Kardium, Doug held the position of General Manager, Proofing and Color at Eastman Kodak Company, and was responsible for the $55M worldwide proofing and colour business and a 130-person team. He held senior positions in service, development and management during his 12 years at Kodak and Creo Inc. (acquired by Kodak in 2005). He graduated with a B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Simon Fraser University.
 
Doug will be speaking about his career journey along with some of the exciting opportunities at Kardium!

Dr. Aadil Ali is clinical scientist at the University Health Network in Toronto, ON where his  research revolutionized the field of lung transplantation by showing that 10 degree preservation is able to prolong organ storage more than the clinical standard of 4 degrees. He has pioneered the development of a novel organ transplantation device through his work at Traferox Technologies, and their device is already being used in top healthcare centers across the world.
 
Adil was recently recognized by Forbes Magazines as one of their 30 under 30 in Healthcare. Aadil will be speaking about his journey through academia and industry, and his research experiences!

The techniques our CardioRespiratory case competition will focus on is are Animal Models, RNA sequencing, and In Vivo Imaging! Animal Models contribute to a huge advancements of more integrative, biologically accurate, and in vitro based research. They set known materials and pathways in the context of full organisms, and are crucial to transferring knowledge into human applications in medicine. The second technique our case competition will focus on is "RNA Sequencing"! RNA Sequencing is an extremely ubiquitous and informative technique in lab settings, and contributes to genetic understanding of numerous diseases, pathways, and important characters in human biology. There is also huge potential on personalized medicine and case studies brought about by RNA sequencing. OUR FINAL TECHNIQUE for the year will be IN VIVO IMAGING, the non-invasive imaging of live animals for research or diagnostic purposes. This presents us with a powerful set of tools to see biology, medicine, and our experiments in action! In vivo imaging can provide us with information on both the macroscopic systems and biomolecular pathways level, and is truly a future direction in research! Last year, IgNITE had a memorable year! Here's a quick recap as to how the 2021-2022 year went here at IgNITE Medical Case Competition! Round 1 Recap: Our theme last year was immunity! Each competitor created an abstract and 1:30 minute recorded elevator pitch of their proposed research project. We held 6 workshops to explore various lab techniques, creating an abstract, critically appraising research and creating videos. Our teams were guided through the first round, leading to our prestiges judges picking our top 40 teams! We welcomed the largest cohort yet across the country! Round 2 Recap: Our top 40 teams were outstanding last year! With projects displaying various areas of immunity, our competitors explored applications and future directions of this theme! We learned a lot through their projects and the work they put in. It's been a pleasure to see young scientists innovate, collaborate, and inspire. If you are curious on how these projects looked like, check out our website! Conference recap: 2021-2022 was our second online Case Conference. We passed milestones with this cohort, as we had our highest attendance, participation, and engagement levels yet! We were able to create a FULLY FREE online event, accessible to various individuals across the country!

Résumé du premier tour : Notre thème de l'année dernière était l'immunité ! Tous les concurrents ont créé un résumé et une présentation éclair enregistré d'une minute trente de son projet de recherche. Through our competition, you get to cover the basics of research. Given a comprehensive case package outlining 3 lab techniques, paired with an experienced mentor to guide you along the way. With various science communication based workshops. All our competitors will get the chance to network with likeminded individuals in your field of interest. Lastly, our competition is a completely virtual and bilingual allowing any student anywhere to follow and expand their passion for science! Over the course of 4 months, you will be challenged to present a novel research proposal within a group. The IgNITE competition is a chance for YOU to work on your skills and grow into the research you are hoping to grow into.
