☀Volunteer Spotlight - meet Dr. Owen Wiseman, ND!☀️

Owen is an active member of our Strategic Advisory Board and our Therapeutic Garden Invitations Steering Committee.

Owen is devoted to engaging the growing field of evidence supporting the clinical benefits of nature. As a Director of the Advisory Board of the International Nature and Forest Therapy Alliance and member of Parks Prescriptions, he helps people incorporate nature-focused principles into their life and work.

Owen was recently awarded Ottawa’s Best Health Educator of 2022 (congrats!). With a keen interest in healthy aging and creating a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals, he's helping close the gap for overlooked patients.

In addition to being a naturopathic doctor, Owen is a public speaker and consultant who works with organizations to help them invest in the health of their employees by incorporating nature into their workspace. When blood sugar is too high, glucose stays in the blood and cannot be used by our cells.

This triggers the pancreas to release insulin, moving excess sugar into fat storage (ie weight gain). Over time, our bodies can even become resistant to the effects of insulin. This is called insulin resistance and it can lead to blood sugar imbalances that cause conditions like diabetes or metabolic syndrome.

Prompting this opinion piece was the deluge of patients I see who seek preventative care, yet feel invisible in the system of illness known as healthcare. Stories of being talked over, dismissed, rejected and downright scorned for voicing another opinion are distressingly common.

Preventative care IS important.
