Global climate change and health in Canadian children | Canadian Paediatric Society

We know that Canada is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet - and this has particular implications for our health. In fact, news of record-breaking heat in Canada is making international headlines. The impacts of climate change - such as unusually extreme heat - can impact children in specific ways as this CPS practice point explains:

https://www.cps.ca/en/documents/position/global-climate-change

Climate change is a reality. Numerous expert authorities warn of the critical need to undertake and adapt environmental efforts to protect human health. Climate change is accelerating, and countries in high latitudes, such as Canada, are experiencing climate change more directly and, for some end po...

Economies are opening up but in some provinces, families are still wondering what the 2021-22 school year will look like.

The Canadian Paediatric Society is calling on all Ministers of Education to announce their plans ASAP, and to ensure that the next school years starts on time and is uninterrupted.

We are also urging provinces to scale up support for mental health, learning, and behaviour needs. Children and youth will need to be prioritized in the post-pandemic recovery.

Sask. First Nation announces hundreds of unmarked graves found at former residential school site | CBC News

More stolen children discovered. We know there are many more whose families and communities are still feeling their loss, still wondering what happened to them. Today, we are holding the families of the Cowessess First Nation in our thoughts as we renew our commitment to recognizing the ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous health and to forwarding health equity in Canada.

For survivors and family of the Indian Residential Schools, a crisis line is available 24 hours a day: 1-866-925-4419

A news release from Cowessess and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous First Nations did not give a specific number, but said it will be the most found to date in Canada.

Will schools return to ‘normal’ in September? Health experts say it depends on various factors

“We now have one year of experience and research under our belt. There’s absolutely no excuse now – we should be prepared.” Chair of the CPS Action Committee for Children and Teens, Dr. Karen Leis, on the need to prepare now for a safe & uninterrupted return to in-person learning in the fall:

Vaccination and lower rates of COVID-19 should allow for a safe return to in-person learning this fall, doctors say, but which health protocols and other measures stay in place remains uncertain

There is perhaps no greater pain than the loss of a child, yet Indigenous communities have had to bear this pain for generations. We are calling on the Government of Canada to accelerate the implementation of the TRC's Calls to Action, especially searching each residential school site to find and identify every lost child. http://ow.ly/BP5750F7vDA

“We had an opportunity to help prevent further damage to Ontario’s children and youth, and we have failed. Other provinces and territories made children and youth a priority, and were able to keep schools open with minimal disruption.”

Now Ontario families need to know how the govt will ensure that all schools open safely in September 2021 -- *on time*, with full-day in-person learning for all students K to 12, and with all extracurricular activities and support services restored.

On Thursday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford asked educators and medical/health experts and organizations for input into the province's decision to re-open schools to in-person learning before the end of this school year.

As we have said for many months, children and youth are in the midst of a mental health crisis brought about by pandemic restrictions. The harms of continued isolation and lack of social connection--and the benefits of restoring those connections, even for a short period of time--significantly outweigh any risks associated with in-person learning. #EveryDayCounts
