According to Operation Lifesaver Canada numbers, a motorist is 40 more likely to die in a collision with a train than another motor vehicle. Think you can beat a train at a railway crossing? Don't bet your life on it. There's a great FAQ section at the link:

Did you know that trespassing is the leading cause of railway-related fatalities and injuries? If a train approaches and you’re trespassing on a railway bridge, you will be trapped. Bridges are only slightly wider than the rails, leaving little to no room for a person if a train does come along. Trains are quiet, move faster than you think and cannot stop easily once moving.
