Setting yourself up to... fail?

If you’re working on improving your well-being but you’re not actually doing goal specific tasks to help yourself, then it’s more likely you’re going to fail 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Sometimes the truth hurts, but the only person in charge of making sure you’re implementing these changes is YOU! Not your doctor, not your nutritionist and not your partner. These people can offer support along the way, cheer you on and just maybe (after they see how good you feel) they’ll join in too 😉.

My goal is to start eating more during the day to prevent nighttime hanger. This means that I need to make sure I have enough food prepped or planned for busy days. If I don’t have easy to grab food and snacks, I won’t do it. And if I don’t have time to do it, guess what? I’m asking for help or buying some pre made foods that I normally make at home for ease.

Want to start working out in the AM? Set your alarm early, have your clothes ready to go and plan workouts you actually want to do.

Want to start a daily 5 min meditation practice? Set a reminder to your phone and figure out a meditation style that works for you.

Long story short, the one person that’s usually in the way of your goals is the same person looking back at you in the mirror 🪞

🙋🏻‍♀️ Night time snack attack.

Sometimes I sit there and think for a second, am I’m hungry or bored? Nope definitely starving. So off I go to snack.

What does this tell me? For me it means I am not eating enough during the day. I’m a mom, I’m doing a million and one things, multitasking, changing diapers, making sure kids are fed, cleaning as I go, making mental lists of what I need for groceries, trying to text people back, did I remember to make an appointment, did I miss an appointment, looking for someones missing sock, annnnnnnd so much more.

I usually breeze through breakfast and lunch not really paying attention to eating or feeling full, seeing if I need to add more to my bowl because my mind is elsewhere. So my nightly snack attack is a sure sign that I need to bring more intentional awareness to what I’m doing and how I’m feeling.

The truth is so many women are under-nourishing their bodies. Whether it be a situation like mine or another reason, we need take inventory of how we’re showing up for ourselves. Are we eating enough protein? Are we scared of carbs? Do you have “low fat is healthy” ingrained in your brain from the 90’s marketing? How can we expect to feel amazing when we’re not nourishing our bodies with enough food?

I’m choosing to make nourishing my body with enough food a non-negotiable part of my morning and afternoon because I deserve to feel amazing 🙌

🍪 One Bowl Almond Butter, Oat Milk Salted Chocolate Cookies
😋Makes 16 cookies

1 cup runny almond butter
1 egg
1/2 cup almond flour + tbsp
1/2 cup coconut sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 bar of endangered species salted oat milk chocolate or 1/2 cup chocolate chips of choice

Preheat oven to 350. In a large bowl mix together almond butter, egg and coconut sugar. Add in the baking soda, salt and 1/2 cup of almond flour. Mix well. If your dough is too sticky add the additional 1-2 tbsp of almond flour - this will depend on how runny your almond butter is. Chop chocolate bar into medium sized chunks and fold in.

Use a tbsp cookie scoop to place on a parchment lined pan and flatten with a fork. Bake for 7-8 minutes and you MUST let them cool for 15 minutes so they don’t fall apart.

Going from a city living mama, with all the conveniences at my fingertips to building my little dream farmhouse inspired retreat in the country, makes me feel super excited and ridiculously scared all the same time.

🍃 But I’m committing to what’s calling my soul and what feels exactly right for me in this moment. Taking a chance and giving myself permission to totally hate it or love it is one of the most freeing feelings ever. No strings attached. But I’d never get it out of my head if I didn’t do it. I think those are the things we need to do more of in life. Take those chances that are called on by our hearts, because you never know what’s on the other side.

We just need to be willing to detach from who we’ve been and what we have become, before we can discover who we are really meant to be and what our work is in the world 💫

Now most importantly, who’s ready to help me design this kitchen 😂

❤️ 2021 has been the best year yet! Welcoming our sweet baby girl into our family, getting to spend SO much time together and now it’s time to plan for the next year.

Without a doubt it’s going to be a wild ride. You never truly grow in your life until learn to get uncomfortable. It’s saying yes to the things that scare you for a big reward. So I’m here for it 🙋🏻‍♀️ Besides, I get bored easily and I thrive on change. I’m just happy Peter trusts me enough to go along with my crazy ideas 😂

If you’re looking to make changes in your life stop waiting for them to come to you, this is your sign to go after it!

All I want for my birthday is for Peter to say yes to the 30 acre homestead farm I found on MLS 🙋🏻‍♀️

Seriously though, I posted last year about how I don’t care about gifts 🎁on birthdays or holidays. For me it’s that I get to spend it with my 4 fav people in the world. I’m the happiest and the healthiest I’ve been in years. Those are truly the best gifts.

I have so much gratitude for the last year in my life. I’ve grown the absolute most and I’ve had the brightest light shine down on what’s most important. My intuition has guided me in the craziest of ways and I’ve be able to see things through a new perspective - so much so that there are literally no words to describe it.

None of it has come with ease but once you learn that your greatest struggles bring you the best things in life, that is when you truly start LIVING!

Celebrating 32 and not wishing to be anywhere but exactly where I am right now, because I truly have it all 💫

👩‍🍳 I always do a double batch! I love using coconut flour for its taste and added fibre, however it always requires extra eggs and liquid to keep your baking from drying out. These turned out perfect and they’re a great nut free snack to send for school or daycare! I freeze extra in cooking tacos and the place them into my stasher bags to keep them fresh.

Double Batch Pumpkin Muffins

1 1/4 cup brown rice flour
1 1/4 cup bobs red mill all purpose GF flour
2/3 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup coconut flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves

2 cups puréed pumpkin
2/3 cups butter or coconut oil melted (not too hot)
1/2-3/4 cup maple syrup (3/4 if you want +sweet)
5 large eggs room temp
1/2 cup water
1 tsp vanilla

Optional: 1 cup chocolate chips or raisins

Preheat oven to 325. Whisk the wet ingredients together in one bowl. Mix the dry ingredients in another. Add your optional chocolate chips or raisins. Scoop batter into a lined muffin tin. Makes 24 regular muffins. I made 12 regular and 24 mini.

For regular sized muffins bake for 22-25 minutes until tops are just firm. For minis bake for 14-17 minutes checking ever 1 minute if not cooked by 14.

Creamy Chicken and Bacon Soup. The best soup I’ve ever made. Salty, creamy, nourishing, filling and oh-so DELICIOUS. We had lots of leftovers to use up in the fridge so this is what came of them!

Make it like this 🔽
5 cups homemade chicken bone broth (simmered mine 24 hours)
1 small yellow onion
4 cloves garlic
3 carrot sticks
3 celery sticks
2 cups green beans
6 slices cooked sugar and sulphate free bacon
3 cups cooked diced chicken
1 tbsp grass fed butter
1 cup cashews
1 cup water
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp ground thyme

Chop all your veggies into small pieces. Heat butter over med/low heat and sauté onion and garlic for 5 mins. Add celery and carrots, season with thyme, salt and pepper and cook for another 5 minutes. Add broth, cover, bring to a boil and then simmer for 10 mins. Add diced chicken and bacon along with chopped green beans. Cook covered for 15 minutes or until beans are tender. While soup is cooking add cashews and 1 cup water to your blender and blend until it turns into a smooth cream. Stir in the cashew cream at the end of cooking.

*You can also use a good quality grass fed, organic heavy cream instead of the cashew cream.

I choose L ❤️ V E

Every single time, I choose love over fear. Even if for a second fear pops up, guess what - you have the opportunity choose again. And again. And again. And each and every time love wins 🙌🏼

When you live your life from a fear based perspective you cannot make logical choices, adrenaline and cortisol are elevated, and your immune system is suppressed. Health comes from a place of wholeness and living in a state of fear is anything but healthy. It’s a hard cycle to break but it can be done.

Choose love by surrounding yourself with people who support you, eliminating sources that make you feel fear (👋 social media and 24/7 news), and most of all do what makes you happy and feel good. Get out in nature, bathe in sunlight, breathe in fresh air and listen to your heart. Once you start living life from your heart centre you’ll be amazed where it leads you.

So today if you’re feeling fearful, remember, YOU have the choice to choose a more loving thought 💕

🍕 Craving carbs?! My best kept secret, works every time!

EAT THEM!

Usually when I start to crave carbs or sugar it’s because I just haven’t been eating enough in general. What I’ll usually do is eat what ever I’m craving and then from there on out,
make sure I’m fuelling my body with the right foods and eating enough. This can be hard when I’m busy with the kids 😫 plus breastfeeding on top of it I need the extra intake.

👉🏼But, if this is a regular cycle for you where you are constantly craving carbs and sugar, something needs to be addressed with your gut and/or your stress levels.

The good news is there are plenty better for you options than take out food filled with undesirable ingredients that can leave you feeling worse off. And you can get your gut health and stress levels back into balance 🙌🏼

Have carb cravings that just won’t quit?! Let me know in the comments below 🙋🏻‍♀️

🍕PIZZA PARTY!

In a world of instant gratification, make pizza from scratch with your kids! It teaches them patience and that not everything is immediate. Jake and I made the dough together, then I explained we had to set it in the pantry covered so the dough could get bigger to make pizzas! He was soo disappointed we weren’t having pizza right away, but it served as a great lesson for him. Then tonight we’ll make all our own individual pizza’s! We’re all excited and we are waiting patiently 😂 💕

Dough recipe is from and we’ll add lots of fun toppings for dinner 🍕

There’s no better feeling than making 60 meatballs 😂

Ok maybe there is, but it feels good to know these are stocked in the freezer for a busy week. Take them out, pair them with some veggies like this bowl - cauliflower rice and sautéed cabbage and kale in bone broth.

Or cook up some noods, throw in some sauce and some veggies and dinner is done.

What can you do next time you cook to make your life easier on busy days?

The world is such a wild place right now - and it serves me as a daily reminder of what’s important.

Teaching my kids kindness and love always wins, nourishing our bodies with delicious food and our hearts with play, showing them what love is and making sure they feel it every day ❤️

The thoughts we choose become the reality we live with. Make sure you’re not getting stuck in the negative patterns that are SO easy to get caught up in. You get to choose what you let into your mind and the four walls you call home. Make sure they are both filled with love and things that make you happy 💫

🍎 Get out there and pick those apples! Then make this delicious and simple apple crisp.

6-8 small/medium apples
2 cups oats
1/2 cup almonds
1/4 cup sunflower and pumpkin seeds mixed
1/3 cup grass fed butter
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt

Pre heat oven to 375. Chop apples into 1 inch cubes. In a food processor add cold butter, maple, oats, nuts, seeds, salt and cinnamon. Process until crumbly - not powdery! Add apples to a baking dish and then top with oat crumble. Bake for 40-50 mins.

We’ll be topping ours with some grass fed crème fresh I found a few days ago but you could also do ice cream, coconut cream or eat it plain! 🤩

Bone broth! One of my staples all year round. Here’s how we make it

3-4 lbs chicken or beef bones
2 sticks both celery and carrot
1-2 sweet onions
6 cloves garlic
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
Water to cover

Optional: roast bones at 425 for 20-30 mins.
Rough chop the veggies and add to slow cooker, instant pot or soup stock pot. Add bones, ACV and salt. Fill to cover with filtered water. Cook on low for 12-24 hours OR high pressure for 4 hours for the instant pot. Strain and store in glass jars for 4 days in the fridge or freeze for 3 months.

Our favourite way to consume it is straight up in a cup (Jake is obsessed) and in soups/stews. You can also use it as cooking liquid for veggies or grains! So much flavour and amazing for the gut.

These little hands have been helping out in the kitchen more and more lately! As soon as one of us starts to prep a meal or snack Jake isn’t far behind shouting “up please!” 🙋‍♂️

Cooking with a toddler can be stressful - if you have too many expectations. I set up the avocados, lime, salt and masher for Jake to dig in only to turn around and see that he poured a huge amount of salt into the guacamole 😂 and if you’ve watched my recent story you saw what happened with the eggs 😆

Fostering these LIFE skills are so important that we’ve let go of the stress about mess (we AKA me 😉) and try to keep it light and fun.

Now here’s to hoping one day I’ll wake up to my kids making me breakfast 🍳

I can’t believe summer is almost over and this guy will be going back to work in September! 😦

Over the past 4 months I’ve LUCKILY had Peter off with me for just over 3 months and timing couldn’t have been better - with this wild child who has now totally chilled out 😆 for now. Feeling sad that this will be over soon, but so incredibly grateful for the experience it’s allowed us to have. Between finishing our basement and the 1000 other projects he’s done, I’ve still had an equal parenting partner that has given me the most postpartum support that I really needed. 💕

My plan over the next couple weeks is to get some meal prep done for the freezer once again to have some of our fav healthy meals and snacks on hand when life gets busy. Always about those double batches. Soup, chilli and stew on repeat for the fall is our kinda thing 😋

Prep once and eat for multiple days! That’s how we like to do it around here. Pictured is everything I like to put into a giant bowl for a quick lunch or dinner.

✅Red cabbage in ACV
✅Kale marinated in sesame oil, lime juice and salt
✅Batch of quinoa
✅Chopped mango
✅Edamame
✅Chopped cilantro
✅Turmeric and lime dressing

Pair with your protein of choice (chicken, beef meatballs, chickpeas, lentil burgers etc.) for a balanced + delish meal 🤩

World breastfeeding week🤱

Such a great reminder of the wild journey I’ve been on in this stage of motherhood. I almost forgot I was still breastfeeding during the first two trimesters of being pregnant with Kaia. It was HARD! So much pain in the first trimester with changing hormones, I had a dip in supply which brought on so much sadness and lots of tears (from Jake and I), then during the second trimester I had pretty intense nursing aversion. I still remember the day Jake was going to nurse before nap time and looked at me and said “mama” then shook his head no. No one talks about how hard it is with your journey coming to an end either 😭

This time around I’ve been grateful to breastfeed once again, but dealt with major oversupply (not as great as you’d think) and a baby with an unhappy tummy because of it. With both babes I saw a lactation consultant to make sure things were good and sort out any issues. The last few weeks have been smooth sailing and I’m a certified pro at nursing in both carriers 🙌🏼

It’s not always as easy and natural as we sometimes think, but it’s a beautiful thing when you hit that sweet spot.

However you choose to feed your baby, you’re an amazing mama 💕

Meal prep days are so worth it!

After getting groceries dedicate an hour or so to prep some staples for the week. Here I did:

✅ Soaking berries in vinegar water to clean and then store in a bowl lined with a small cloth to collect moisture
✅ Chopped and added some apple cider vinegar to red cabbage to add into salads
✅ Washed a head of kale, stored half in the fridge and chopped the other half and marinated it with sesame oil, lime and salt

I also take anything out of its packaging, put it all away in the fridge or pantry and if I have time, start prepping some proteins to cook up with lots of leftovers. This saves us SO much time - especially now that our hands are extra full.

🌪 I feel like the past 12 weeks I’ve been stuck in what feels like a time warp. It went be so quickly but every tough day seemed so long. Pretty much like my pregnancy this time around.

Sometimes you can’t see the storm you went though until it starts to clear up. Now that we’ve been sailing more smoothly forward for a bit, I’ve been able to take an inventory for my own health 🙌🏼

☀️ Committing time to myself was always so hard the first time around with Jake, major mom guilt!! This time I’m taking the damn time and not feeling guilty. I need it for my physical/mental health and in the end it makes me a better mama and partner.

Taking time for yourself is anything but selfish 👏

Weekend meal prep: LOVE IT or HATE IT?!

First thing Sunday morning I love to get to work in the kitchen to set my self up for the week ahead. I dedicated 1-2 hours to prep and make some snacks so I can enjoy the rest of the day ☀️

Its usually a mash up of muffins or cookies, Jakes daycare snacks, some cut up veggies, taking things out of the freezer and prepping cooking veggies for the night.

What are your go to prep ideas?!

🍪 On my baking list for this weekend:

ALMOND FLOUR CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

1/4 cup salted butter or coconut oil
1/3 cup pure maple syrup
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups almond flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 - 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips depends on your liking

Mix the dry ingredients together.
Melt the oil on low heat, add maple syrup, vanilla and eggs, mix well. Mix it all up, drop by large tablespoon on parchment lined pan, press down slightly with fork (these will be sticky!) and bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. For the cookie skillet add to a 10 inch cast iron pan and bake for 22-26 minutes.

Let cool to firm up before transferring.

Is there a reason I can't print the 8-week Gut Rehab Program?
It's more important than ever to find ways to take care of ourselves; both mentally and physically, whatever that looks like to you!

Our clinicians are still here to serve you ... The only difference being that they may or may not be in their sweatpants while they do it 😉 Our clinician team has been very excited to have designed and be able to virtually offer the NutriChem Virtual Health Summit! And just like that, it's around the corner, and at 70% CAPACITY!

On Thursday May 14th, dive deep into topics such as anxiety and depression, medical cannabis, infertility, microbiome gut health, allergy conditions, testosterone health, immunity, menopause, and more! This day will be hosted by Lianne Laing of Living Your Life with Lianne Laing Podcast - and is completely free!

This is a 'pop in, pop out' event! You do not need to be able to attend all 8 talks between the hours of 9am and 5pm. The talks are approximately every hour (see our itinerary at bit.ly/nutrichemvirtualhealthsummit/ for full details!) with intermissions in between that you won't want to miss 😉 featuring familiar faces such as Laura Mierzwa Nutrition, and some familiar places such as our Compounding Facility and more!

Be sure to register your spot, as they're filling quickly! bit.ly/nutrichemvirtualhealthsummit/

This time one year ago we were unpacking boxes, setting up our clinic, hooking up the phones, stocking our shelves - getting ready to present the world our highly anticipated flagship location: 2599 Carling Avenue after 38 years at our Richmond Road location. 🎊 It had been a project on the rise for years, and we've been so proud to be serving you from such a comprehensive facility that really speaks to the world what NutriChem is really about: SMART HEALTHCARE.

So happy first birthday, Carling Avenue. 🎈 This is not the way we expected to be celebrating our first birthday. We miss serving our clients (in person!), we miss having you at our microbiome bar, on our IV's, in our clinic, grabbing your prescriptions, in our front store - but we will see you again one day soon. For now, stay healthy, stay connected!

Thank you so much to our amazing staff who have been with us through it all,
Our clinical team and management,
And all of our vendors and other teams that have come in and made this all possible:
