2021 Prostate Cancer Patient Conference | Day 2

Hello Prostate Cancer Network Ottawa (PCNO) members

The Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) held a two-day conference on September 11 and 12. There are some interesting sessions about advanced prostate cancer and the treatments that are now available, such as PSMA PET scans, that we think would be of interest to PCNO members. These include:
Good insights re treatment of Adv PCa on the first day towards the end of Dr Kwon’s presentation
On the second day Dr Dorff talks about ‘immunology’ and the treatment of Adv PCa; and how T cells are utilized
It was interesting that both speakers considered chemotherapy to be over stigmatized; that it is a better treatment re side effects than perceived.

Here are the links to the presentations:
Day 1 (starts after 39 seconds of silence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhxSwN3-5jw

Canadian Cancer Survivor Network – The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network was created by a group of Canadians concerned about cancer.

Hello Prostate Cancer Network Ottawa (PCNO) members

The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network is working on a prostate cancer related project and have asked us to let our members know about it and possibly contribute.

The message from CCSN follows. If you are interested in contributing to their project, please contact them directly, per coordinates in their message below, to work out the details.

--------------------------------------------------

My name is Alan Rempel; I am a Research Associate at the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN).

The CCSN is working on a project to raise awareness about the importance of rehabilitation for prostate cancer survivors who experience incontinence or erectile dysfunction – both life-changing side effects. One key part of this project will be stories from individual prostate cancer patients about dealing with these two severe side effects.

We are looking for prostate cancer patients who are willing to tell their stories about dealing with incontinence or erectile dysfunction. They could provide a written piece (which can be anonymous if they like) or a video – whichever they prefer. This would then be posted along with other patient stories on the CCSN's website in our soon to be expanded Prostate Cancer section.

This is a picture of me playing with Da Vinci Robot, at the unveiling, in Ottawa, nine years ago. I never dreamt that I would end up on the business end of it last year. Thank you to the team at the Ottawa Hospital that brought it here and to the donors like Ride For Dad that made it possible.
Hey @PCCNO and your members! Come out and meet some of our Prostate Cancer Canada team on Saturday, November 2nd! We are joining @CCRAlliance, patients, families, and survivors in the #cancer community at a free public event, featuring Dr. John Bell of The Ottawa Hospital - L'Hôpital d'Ottawa
Making healthy choices: Does having an online health coach help? Young adult cancer survivors living in rural areas often face barriers that can prevent or limit their participation in health behaviours, including physical activity and nutrition, which can affect their health and well-being. This study will explore if receiving 12-weeks of one-on-one personalized health coaching online can help rural-dwelling young adult cancer survivors become more physically active and eat more fruits and vegetables. Participants will be: (1) Randomized to one of two groups (A or B): Group A participants will: (i) Meet 1 hour per week with a health coach online for 12 weeks (ii) Receive a copy of the American Cancer Society physical activity and nutrition guidelines by email Group B participants will: (i) Receive a copy of the American Cancer Society physical activity and nutrition guidelines by email (ii) Obtain a copy of the materials group A received after completing all surveys (2) Complete a short survey online at the start of the study and 12 weeks later (3) Complete a 60-minute interview (if randomized to group A) You can participate if you: (1) Completed primary treatment for non-metastatic cancer; (2) Are currently between 20 to 39 years of age; (3) Live in a rural area (locations >100km from large urban centres with a population
Let’s start by walking together! Cancer survivors face a variety of barriers that impact their ability to participate in physical activity, which has been shown to help improve overall health and well-being. We at the Physical Activity and Health Promotion Laboratory are conducting a research study to see how an 8-week supervised group-based walking program that offers self-management strategies can impact cancer survivors’ knowledge, skills, and confidence to participate in physical activity. Participants will be asked to: (1) Participate in an 8-week supervised group-based walking program, which consists of 1 weekly session proceeded by short information sessions on how to self-manage your health. The weekly sessions will last between 40 and 90 minutes. (2) Complete a face-to-face interview with the research assistant that will last approximately 60 minutes. You can participate if you: (1) Have completed primary treatment for Stages I-III cancer in the last 5 years (2) Are 18 years of age or older (3) Are able to walk without an assistive device (4) Are able to participate in physical activity (5) Are able to read, understand, and speak English (6) Willing to provide informed consent If you would like more information or would like to participate in the study, please contact the research assistant, Jenson Price: [email protected], or 613-562-5800 ext. 7300.
