The most shocking question for some of my clients is when I ask them at the end of their first session:

"how would you feel if I ask you to put away your scale and stop weighing yourself?"

Some scary emotions can come out:
- fear
- denial
- confusion

And some great ones:
- relief!😃
- happiness!😃
- freedom!😃

The most up-to-date research shows that a scale can do more harm than good when it comes to people's mental AND physical health! Fixation on weight, can lead to weight cycling which has been proven to be related to an increased risk of a cardiovascular event, disordered eating and mental health conditions (e.g. anxiety).

If you feel like you are greatly impacted by the number on the scale, and you want to know how to be HEALTHY without that shame/guilt/stress--> contact me and we can discuss ways to start to feel free from the scale!...and/or just "accidently" drop a large rock on that scale😁....can't bother you if its broken🙃

🌿More people are looking for ways to reduce their waste more than ever!

If that is something you are thinking about, here are some easy tips on ways you and your family can become more sustainable. I recommend selecting 1 or 2 that resonate with you and your family this month and see how you find it! Small changes can lead to big successes. :)
☑️ Try reusable freezer and pantry bags
☑️ Try eliminating plastic wrap and using a reusable option (e.g. beeswax)
☑️ Bring your own bags to select produce instead of the plastic ones in-store
☑️ Try to use all of the food you purchase (e.g. broccoli stems in soups, bones to make broth, etc)
☑️ Try reusable or cloth towels/napkins
☑️ Refer to the picture for more!

And if you have anything you are doing right now, please share! We can do better together!🥰

Parent tip: It is very important to model respecting our environment for our children, so don't hesitate to include them in the process and give them some responsibility 😁

November is Diabetes Month, and the most commonly asked questions are always about Carbs!

Some concepts to remember:
🔉 Carbohydrates are essential!!
🔉 Carbs are in almost all foods groups: vegetables, fruits, legumes, dairy products, grains, nuts and seeds.
🔉 Incorporating high fibre-rich foods in your meals/snacks that you enjoy is beneficial for managing blood sugars and for your overall health.
🔉Pairing high carbohydrate-rich foods with sources of protein and fats can help manage blood sugar levels!

Pictured is some meal inspiration: soy sauce chicken, edamame beans with quinoa, and steamed broccoli and collards. I added a bit of sesame oil and soy sauce for more flavour.

If you struggle with meal planning for your diabetes or understanding how foods affect blood sugar, please contact me! My team offers 1:1 personalized counseling and workshops! To learn more, contact me for a free 15 minute consultation.

Let's talk about removing diet-culture from exercise!

Goal for all bodies (with varying abilities and interests) --> ✅Engage in movement in a way that is joyful!💫

Let's shift the focus away from physical activity having to look a specific way:
❌needing to be intense,
❌counting how many calories they’ve burned or,
❌working out until they are drenched in sweat.

Instead, focusing on exploring movement that feels good in their bodies✅ 🌻 😁

🔉Exercise does not need to be used as a way to punish yourself for any foods you’ve eaten. It does not need to be used as a way to change the number on the scale. It does not need to be used as way to change your body to meet societal expectations. 🔉

Activity can be something that is ✅joyful and something you ✅look forward to, rather than something you dread 🌞

I encourage you to take the time & space in the next few months to explore new ways of moving free from expectations or judgement:
- Maybe explore a winter activity that you love ( e.g. skating)
- Maybe try a new outdoor activity that interests you (e.g. snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, etc)
- Maybe find online videos of an activity to do at home (e.g. yoga, kickboxing, dance)
- or maybe take a break from any scheduled physical activity, in order to provide your body space to distance itself from the guilt/shame and stress that "diet-focused exercise" has caused.

PRO tip: Progress not Perfection! 💗

Anxious about the Halloween Candy expected this weekend?!

As a dietitian, I often see parents stress about the aftermath of trick or treating.

Do you ever wonder if you should limit how much candy your child eats? Should you throw out what they don’t eat after the first night? Maybe you employ the “Switch Witch” strategy (the imaginary witch that comes in the night and switches out your child's candy for a toy or gift).

My advice always remains the same, no matter how you handle the copious amounts of candy that floods your home after a night of trick or treating; avoid making candy out to be a bad guy! Keeping a NEUTRAL attitude towards foods that are typically labelled “bad or junky” will allow your child to develop a neutral attitude towards ALL foods. Remember no food is good or bad, and all foods should be enjoyed given the right place and time! So, BRING ON THE CANDY!

Parents and guardians, don't stress you got this!

Food Talk for Young Children Series (4/4)
🍝COMMON Starches and Grains🥖

These foods often get a bad "rep"! Diet-culture has us believing these are the foods that make us unhealthy. That is very far from the truth!

Most starches and whole grains give our bodies:
✅fibre = great for our digestive system and prevents many diseases (such as diabetes, heart disease, etc)
✅ glucose = main source of energy for our bodies
✅B vitamins = related to heart health, brain health and mental health!

🔉Teachers or daycare providers
If you would would like me to come to your workplace and discuss some tips and tools to discuss nutrition with children, while protecting their relationship with food AND preventing disordered eating, contact me!

Pumpkin Pancake Stack

Pumpkin puree contains fiber, vitamin A, iron, and no added sugar! Try adding it to your usual pancake mix for a fun, fall-themed twist.

My colleague added a spoonful of pumpkin puree to water and mixed it into this pre-made protein pancake mix. Said it worked perfectly!! Then, she stacked the pancakes with banana slices and topped it off with pure maple syrup. 😁

Eating nutritious foods doesn't have to be boring!

COMMON Vegetables🥕🥦 + Protein Sources🍳🍗

Sorry I missed posting one last week! The short work week was jam packed!

Some reminders when talking to young children about food:
✅ to relate the food to something that they understand like the parts of the body.
❌ AVOID categorizing foods into “good” or “bad”
❌ AVOID relating food choices to body size/weight/fat
❌ AVOID shaming children for the quantity they eat
