☀️ Massage Therapy & sunburns DON’T work together! ☀️

After the long winter and with our recent beautiful weather, everyone wants to get out and enjoy and absorb their dose of vitamin D.

- Be cautious of being in the sun too much; 80% of UV rays can still reach our skin if it is cloudy out.
- Massaging over a fresh sunburn or peeling sunburn can cause even more damage.
- As the skin is trying to heal the skin is vulnerable and the friction of massaging/rubbing the area breaks the newly developed tissue.
- This can cause more harm by causing infection, or additional damage to the cells that are regenerating, making for a longer healing time.
- Wait until the skin is completely healed before you have a massage. We want to give you the best treatment and care possible!

Enjoy the summer sun safely! 😎

This Saturday is the official last day of winter! With the milder weather, many of us have started to do our Spring cleaning; purging inside the house, turning over your closet, clearing out the garage, removing winter decorations, garden prepping, and more! With Spring just around the corner, we’d like to remind everyone to pace yourselves, take breaks, and listen to your body! You may not even realize it, but too much (even of a good and rewarding thing!) can wake up muscles you haven’t used in a while, and cause strain and/or soreness.

When bending over, make sure to keep your back straight and lower yourself by bending your knees.

Also, remember to keep your back straight when lifting heavy objects, and to lift with your legs!

If you have any concerns with spring cleaning, contact us today!

You may have seen our post last week for Osteoporosis Month. Well, November is also Fall Prevention month!

Winter and ice are coming! Falls can affect individuals of any age, and individuals with Osteoporosis are particularly susceptible to injury due to falls.

With physiotherapy, you can improve your balance to reduce your risk of falling.

Have you ever heard of the Berg Balance Scale? The Berg Balance Scale is the gold-standard test of an individual’s sitting, standing, and dynamic balance. We may use this test during your assessment, to assess your balance before treatment.

You are never too young or old to improve your balance! It’s always important to have good balance, no matter your interests or day-to-day routines!

Test your balance! How long can you stand on one leg for, without wobbling/twisting? Can you stand tandem (one foot in front of the other) and play catch?

If you have any questions regarding your balance and how we can help, contact the clinic today!

November is Osteoporosis Month! Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, which can lead to increased risk of fracture.
How can WE help?
Physiotherapy can help individuals with Osteoporosis through strengthening of bone and muscle to reduce bone thinning and reduce the risk of falling and fractures. Physiotherapy for individuals with Osteoporosis would include weight bearing, flexibility exercise, strengthening exercise, postural exercise, and balance exercise. Physiotherapy can help patients with this disease manage their pain and lower the risk of falls, and thus, fractures.
How can YOU help?
Visit osteoporosis.ca to learn more about the disease, participate in events, donate, and more!

Here’s a great tip from our Registered Dietitian, Jenn, on how to create a healthy environment in your home so the healthy choice is the easy choice!
#healthysnackforthewin

Finding yourself eating out of boredom? Mindlessly snacking on foods when you’re really not that hungry? Finding yourself choosing food over other activities to escape the realities of today?

You’re not alone.

Being confined to your home 24/7 can be stressful! It can also be incredibly boring and easy to find yourself developing habits your future self may not appreciate.

Stress can increase our cortisol levels, which causes our appetites to change, causing us to overeat and develop cravings for unhealthier foods. Add boredom and being near the kitchen to the mix, and you have a recipe for #snackattacks.
As much as this is a time that we can venture down the black hole of unhealthy behaviours, this is also an awesome opportunity to practice mindfulness AND healthy eating habits. It’s also a great opportunity to create a healthy environment.
One thing I like to do is fill my fridge and pantry with healthy options that are EASY, so when those snack attacks come along, this happens (see picture of #healthysnackforthewin)
It’s so easy to do…
1. Load up on veggies at the grocery store once a week.
2. Clean and prep veggies.
3. Put in Tupperware to store in fridge for healthy snacks.
4. Enjoy with Greek Yogurt dip, Tzatziki or on their own!

Happy, healthy eating 😊

Jenn
