Shadow pictures…when the light comes in first thing in the morning these beautiful shadows appear on my bedroom wall. I didn’t used to notice them, but now I integrate them into my day as an opportunity for a short mindfulness practice…sometimes they stay for a while, sometimes they are fleeting sometimes they shift and move and change…but they always help me pause, take a breath and soak in the beauty.

In case you need this reminder….💕

You are a person worthy of love. You don’t have to do anything to prove that.

You don’t have to climb Mt. Everest, write a catchy tune that goes viral on YouTube, or be the CEO of a tech start-up who cooks every meal from scratch using ingredients plucked from your organic garden. If you’ve never received an award and there are no plaques proclaiming your exceptional gifts hanging on your walls, you still deserve all the love in the world.

You do not have to earn love. You simply have to exist. When we see ourselves and see life more clearly, we come to rely on that. We remember that we do deserve the blessing of love.

Find Your Focus: Own Your Attention in 12 Minutes a Day

When people think about starting or sustaining a mindfulness practice, one common barrier is the idea that you have to sit for long periods of time -- like 20-30 minutes...but guess what...to reap the benefits of mindfulness you can practice for as little as 12 minutes a day according to research done by Dr. Amishi Jha! In fact, in my coaching practice we start even smaller - at 10 minutes a day...or less...and people report that it makes a big difference in their quality of life and their ability to sustain a mindfulness practice that makes their life easier, less stressful and more joyful!
Curious? Send me a message or set up a time to have a coffee chat here - I have 2 spots for 1:1 coaching open for October: https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=17213837&appointmentType=10712766

In her book Peak Mind, neuroscientist Amishi Jha explores research revealing how mindfulness training protects our attentional resources.

On this National Day of Truth and Reconciliation…
Reflect, learn and amplify Indigenous voices.
If you have the means, consider donating to an Indigenous organization such as the Orange Shirt Society (that’s where I’ll make a donation today, as well as to Minwashin Lodge for Women. )
Gratitude to the artist Andy Everson] for creating this powerful image.

Posted @withregram • Andy Everson] Compelled to help raise awareness for Every Child Matters, I created this image on Orange Shirt Day in 2015 and immediately posted it online. As happens these days, the image was rapidly shared and spead on social media.

In 2016, I allowed the Orange Shirt Society to use the design as part of their ongoing campaign of awareness. To this day, the Orange Shirt Society continues to have my full support and can continue to use this design as they fit.

In recent weeks, I have received an overwhelming numbers of requests to use this image—along with the ‘215’ variant—which has necessitated making this statement as I am not able to respond to each request individually.

The following is my statement for the free use of this design:

Artist credit should be given for the design.

The image can be shared openly on social media, including using it as one’s profile pic.

I am amenable to groups and individuals using the design in a not-for-profit manner that helps increase awareness on the issue. This can include making t-shirts, patches and pins for school groups and work teams or using the design on signage to show support for Every Child Matters. What I do ask, however, is that when the design is used, a donation should be given to a non-profit Indigenous society such as: the Orange Shirt Society, The Indian Residential School Survivors Society or Copper Legacy Indigenous Empowerment Society. When businesses are having shirts printed for staff, I think it is reasonable to request that $25-30 PER shirt be given to such charities. Use of the design must go beyond simply raising awareness and should include a component of “giving back” as well.

On the eve of the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, #GGMaySimon shares her vision for reconciliation with us:

“Reconciliation is a way of life, continuous, with no end date. It is learning from our lived experiences and understanding one another. It is creating the necessary space for us to heal. It is planting seeds of hope and respect so that our garden blooms for our children.”

Did you know that there is a growing body of evidence to support the use of mindfulness practice in concussion recovery?
Research shows that mindfulness helps people with concussions and other mild traumatic brain injuries in three main ways:
1. Mindfulness helps with pain management...by changing your subjective relationship to the pain
2. Mindfulness can decrease neuro-fatigue...so your brain can rest and recharge ... even in the midst of your day!
3. Mindfulness can improve your overall quality of life...you become more aware of your limits so you don't push past them and end up crashing...and you notice the small moments of joy more often, which builds your resources and resilience...

We can’t avoid pain—but we can transform our response to it. One of my students used the Body Sensation meditation to deal with intractable chronic pain, eventually diagnosed as Lyme disease. Again and again, she brought her awareness back to what she was experiencing in the moment, the one moment in front of her. She observed her pain, she said, the way the tide of it surged and receded, its location, the routes it traveled, its shape and texture—sometimes pulsing, sometimes radiating, sometimes jagged as lightning bolts. She watched closely to see how her pain, like everything else in the world, changed. And she found moments of respite that were sustaining to her. She didn’t get rid of the pain, but, she told me, “I found the space within the pain.”

True!

True!

To see the preciousness of all things, we must bring our full attention to life. Spiritual practice can help bring us to this awareness. The happiness we discover in life is not about possessing or owning. Instead, it is the discovery of the capacity to love, to have a loving, free, and wise relationship with all of life.

Calm Concussion Recovery is a 6 module mindfulness audio program to support people in concussion recovery.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On our concussion recovery path, therapists, doctors, physios, chiropractors will often suggest that we should try mindfulness....and then, well it usually just gets left at that...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Prior to my most recent concussion in January of 2020 I had been working with individual mindfulness coaching clients to help support them on their concussion recovery paths. At the beginning of my own recovery experience, I began to think about how I could help more people...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So... I caught up on the latest research around mindfulness and concussions and designed this audio program to share with others -- because there was nothing like it out there!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For me, the thought of going to a 2 hour weekly class filled me with dread (and I *love* this stuff!!) - I'd have to factor in travel (driving is a HUGE cognitive load), the stimulation of learning stuff + being with lots of people, the energy/points/spoons I had for that day, whether that was live or, even worse, on zoom - and I just couldn't. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So...I created the Calm Concussion Recovery Program…it’s helped me and I hope it helps you!https://erinmccarthy.podia.com/calm-concussion-recovery

Mindfulness coaching & philosophical counselling for curious humans seeking more day-to-day happiness

If someone told you they could give you the tools that would make you happier, and that those tools were 100% supported by evidence and research, what would that mean to you?

I’m Erin McCarthy PhD, Mindfulness Coach & Philosophical Counsellor, and thanks to my unique combination of 30+ years of mindfulness training and experience and academic background as a Philosophy Professor, I can teach you those tools. And you can integrate them into your life in as little as 10 minutes a day. Yes, really!

Our minds and bodies are complex, but flourishing as a human can be surprisingly simple when you have an expert teacher and coach who is able to look at your thoughts and feelings from both a theoretical and practical perspective and offer customized guidance to help you become more of the person you’d like to be and live more of the life you’d like to live.
