If we do this, perhaps we can inspire our politicians to do so as well.
Perhaps we need less focus on one particular party and more on who will attend to the true needs of our country with policies that help us all.

The aggressive party attacks and slander we are subject to distract us from demanding our elected politicians 'serve the people' in the best interests of our country and its ability to thrive - all of us not just some.
We aren't enemies and even with very different views and beliefs, at the heart of the matter we are likely very aligned in our idea of a country we feel safe in and happy to be a part of. Let's ask our politicians what they will do to make this a reality and choose that candidate.

"A recent report reveals that chocolate contains toxic heavy metals, which originate from the soils where cocoa beans are grown. Researchers from George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences found that 43% of tested chocolate products had excessive lead, and 35% had too much cadmium. Organic chocolate had even higher levels of these metals. While eating chocolate occasionally is safe, consuming too much can pose health risks.

The study emphasizes the need to be aware of how much heavy metal you consume from different foods, even though it's impossible to avoid them completely. It also highlights the need for regular checks on food safety, especially for products imported from countries with less strict soil regulations. The research underscores the importance of being aware of heavy metal contamination in food and maintaining transparency about it."

As the working day will wind down soon, I thought I would share a recent IG post for it may be happy hour time for you and if you have the heat and humidity Ottawa does, you may need this!

SUPER SUMMER CITRUS COCKTAIL

Summertime and living is ideally easy and a little more indulgent.
There is something about steamy hot temperatures, sunshine and more socializing that seems to invite in some alcoholic beverages. This oh-so-yummy cold concoction is abundant in antioxidant Vitamin C so go ahead and enjoy one. It counter excess sun exposure. (Is there such a thing? šŸ˜‚)

INGREDIENTS
2 medium size organic oranges or
4 Mandarin or Maroc oranges
2 oz. dark rum
1 oz. triple sec
Ā½ cup ice
2- 4 oz. water ā€“ if desired

DIRECTIONS
Roughly cut up the oranges after a good wash, toss into your blender along with all the remaining ingredients but the water.
Blast until you have a foamy, creamy consistency.
Add an ounce or two of water if desired and blast again.
Pour into 2 chilled stemmed glasses adding more ice if desired.

Garnish with an edible flower such as violets or nasturtium or an orange slice, find your place in the sun or shade and sip ever so satisfied and sans guilt.

TERIā€™S TIPS:
Instead of adding in water, after pouring into glasses, top with a splash of sparkling water to add to little fizz or make it sparkling wine for a little added buzz too. Have fun and toast to living well.

This is what I mean when I say 'eat more real food!'
Away with the girls over the weekend we spoke about the crazy processing of food and how it doesn't rot or mold. Most times, even bugs avoid it because, well, it's not food.

Years ago I did a Twinkies test with the delegates at an AFPA conference showing them the little plastic packaged roll. I brought this very same package back the next year and yes, you guessed it. It was still fully intact, no mold whatsoever. The only change, it was hard as a rock.

Moral of this story... don't eat anything like that and fast food, most processed and highly processed foods are in the category. Be really good to yourself and eat real food.

These toxic ingredients may be in the packaged food you are buying!
They trigger such symptoms as chronic inflammation, gut health issues including bloating, elimination challenges, acid reflux, blood sugar imbalance, neurological challenges, nerve disorders, hormonal imbalance, hyper-activity - artificial colors, flavors, additives and MSG are neuron-toxins.

While you are led to believe the FDA ensures the levels are within their safety allowances there is no accounting of the accumulation of all these various substances in each of us.

Factor this in with the ever increasing number of recalls we must endure. They have increased dramatically over the past month or so.
Did you know most testing is NOT done until after products are released? By then we consumers are consuming the tainted substances. Yes the system right now, serves the food manufacturers and not we tax payers. Speak out, inform your community and let your legislators know this is unacceptable.

I make my mine plant-based yet for all you butter - shortbread cookie fans (yes, like you Diane Gentes :) ) use organic, grass fed butter. They will taste, like 'mom's' from days gone by without the refined flour and sugar.

If you love crunch or chocolate, knead in some chopped dark chocolate or chopped toasted nuts or seeds for a little variation.

Be really savvy about the food you choose to consume.
And know the sources.

As of lately, the food recalls are more rampant than ever.
Daily, several items are recalled - and these are just some of the many. We don't see them all. The FDA can not be relied upon. It's been this way for years.

Invest in learning and buying - growing - trading with local gardeners and farmers food that truly does nourish us.

Seeing it in my feed today after sharing a post on love yesterday -
its a reminder to remember our humanity and connection and be kind to one another for political turmoil has brought out the worst in us.
We don;t have to agree -and we don't have to fight because we disagree.

Our chance to connect comes from listening and hearing and sharing with openness. In this state we may just discover we stand on some common ground and likely we can expand on this and find resolutions to conflicts. That we do this is a daily prayer.

For the zero alcohol folks, here is a fabulous summer suggestion:

NON-ALCOHOLIC WATERMELON MARGARITA
(A great post workout hydrater, as well.)

Shake together equal parts of watermelon juice (Simply puree ripe watermelon in a blender - strain only if you wish) and coconut water, a splash of lime juice and pour over ice. A tiny pinch of sea salt is a nice addition, especially if post workout or time out in the hot sun, is great for added electrolyte replenishment.

What you eat - ingest, is just one part of the orchestra of good health. Digestion, nutrient absorption and utilization the waste elimination matter as well.

Start to enhance digestion with these basic steps:
1 - Stick to eating various, well balanced, whole or minimally processed foods/meals, in amounts appropriate to your needs.
2 - Consume these consciously and in relaxing environments. Ideally with people you love.
3 - Aid your digestive ability by enjoying a few tbsp apple cider vinegar in a few oz. of water before eating, or enjoy a ginger, fennel, chamomile or peppermint tea 15-30 mins before or after meals.
4 - Refer to the charts for additional ideas.

While we may not ace healthy habits all the time, every effort made for better self-care is a deposit in your health account. Start saving now.

FIBER! It's essential to your gut health and beans are a fabulous source. Lectin worriers... soak the beans/ rinse them well and cook them fully. An affordable, nutrient dense source of 'whole food', beans, pulses, lentils are available to most of us. Choose organic when you can and even it's its just little, include some in your daily diet.

Fiber is in our plant foods, exactly amounts will vary, yet these charts given you an approx. amount. Aim for at least 25-35 grams per day keeping in mind, it's best to amp up the amount gradually and ensure you stay sufficiently hydrated and include movement/exercise in your daily regime as well.

More on digestion and digestive health tomorrow. Post time has been hit and miss the last few months yet I will aim to keep the info coming.

I must share this reminder for us all after seeing/hearing shocking responses in the news lately to the recent happenings.

No matter who you believe in and vote for, instead of being fueled by dialogues that are hateful, aggressive and instigating even more divide than we currently have, if we want a good place/country to live in, we must take peaceful actions ourselves. Political leaders have not been doing this yet we can and hopefully we will lead by example. Prayers, so many prayers and peaceful action is needed.
