Today is World Lung Day, and SCN sat down with Dr. Bernard Thébaud to discuss his world-first clinical trial, which is using a stem cell therapy to help prevent the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD, a chronic lung disease in preterm babies. So far, eight babies have been treated as part of this safety trial, and importantly, the first few babies have been able to go home with their parents – a significant milestone for Dr. Thébaud and his team.

It’s Stem Cell Awareness Day! Stem cells are commonly known as the “building blocks” of the body and can regrow, repair or replace damaged or diseased cells, organs or tissues. These tiny little cells have tremendous potential to treat a plethora of diseases, injuries, and life-altering illnesses, and Canada has been a global leader in this field for over 60 years. From diabetes to muscular dystrophy to cardiovascular disease, stem cell and regenerative medicine researchers across the country shared with SCN how they are using stem cells and what the future holds. #stemcells #regenerativemedicine #canadianscience #stemcellawarenessday Thank you to Tyler Wenzel, member of SCN’s Trainee Communications Committee, who interviewed delegates at the 2022 Till & McCulloch Meetings.

SCN’s new Strategic Plan, IGNITE, provides the road map for Canadian research success in the #stemcell and #regenerativemedicine sector. https://stemcellnetwork.ca/about-us/new-mandate-new-era/ Stem cells have traditionally fuelled the field of regenerative medicine (RM) which is focused on regrowing, repairing or replacing damaged or diseased cells, organs and tissues. As the science rapidly advances so too are the techniques, approaches and tools that can be used to drive RM forward. Guided by IGNITE and increased federal funding, SCN is now well positioned to support an expanded array of regenerative medicine research from bench to bedside. To complement SCN’s expanded direction, a refreshed logo and brand has been released. The abstract maple leaf represents the expertise & diversity of people in the Network – researchers, trainees, partners & patients. It also serves as a reminder that stem cell research & regenerative medicine truly is Canada’s science.
