Hiking Is Beneficial For Our Brains As Well As Our Body

I find this such a truth. I never feel as refreshed after time at the gym as I do time on the trail.

What do you think? How does exercise in nature vs. the city or a gym affect your mood?

It might be evident that a pleasant hike through a mountain or forest or up the mountain trails could cleanse your body,

How much sunshine causes melanoma? It's in your genes

Interesting article on our genetic predisposition to melanoma. The article does talk more about Australian rates of skin cancer, but even if you're not in Australia, you are still at risk!

Skin cancer is completely preventable. We spend a lot of time focusing in eating better and exercising to avoid the other types of cancers, so why do we ignore our skin?

Do you have SPF in your daily regimen?

Australian researchers from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute have shown that 22 different genes help to determine how much sun exposure a person needs to receive before developing melanoma.

Is My Coffee Making PMS? – Miranda Naturopathic Clinic

Day 5 - Coffee Free Challenge

I actually feel pretty good today :)

Here's an interesting article that caught my attention this morning, though I will say up front, I don't see any scientific studies linked to these claims on how caffeine could impact PMS. Looks like most connections made from caffeine to PMS is anectodal... but to me, that just means they haven't yet had the chance to actually made a scientific study on the topic. So, I put this information forward with the caveat that it is just another opinion.

What do you think? Do you experience PMS? Have you tried removing caffeine? Did it help you?

5 Caffeine Alternatives If You Want to Cut Back on Your Coffee Intake

Day 2: Coffee free challenge.

I'm an absolute wreck. My head hurts. I'm grumpy and irritable. I'm also really hungry for some reason.

So I ask myself again... why the heck am I doing this? The research that I'm finding so far is saying that coffee can in fact be fairly healthy in a lot of ways - even if anectodal evidence points elsewhere.

So I examine my motives (again, with a slight bitterness because I have lived on a steady diet of caffeine and sarcasm for about as long as I can remember)

1) coffee is expensive. Trying to save a few bucks over the holidays? Track every Timmy's, Starbucks, Second Cup, etc etc purchase you make over the next month. Even at a minimum, I was spending about $100 a month, simply on coffee. As a single mom trying to get her new small business to take off, that's money that can absolutely be better spent on other things.

2) Coffee is a drug, and it is an addiction. It may not be the worst thing a person could be addicted to, but an addiction it is. As I have worked so hard over the last while to quit smoking, get healthy, cut sugar (the other addiction of mine)... I might as well take coffee out as well. I refuse to let my addictions control me anymore.

3) I have stomach issues. My tummy is sensitive to many many things. Stress, dairy, meat, more stress, poor routine, fat, sugar, processed foods, etc etc etc. I've dealt with a lifetime of random, unspecified stomach issues. Cramps, diarrhea, bloating, gas, indigestion... ugh. I've never been able to narrow it down to one particular thing. So who knows? A whole food plant based diet has improved these issues SIGNIFICANTLY - but I'm still a work in progress.

So, while I may be having a small personal meltdown while the caffeine leaves my system - the hope is that this will help longer term. All we can do is try, right?

I found this article this morning that gives me some hope on alternatives to coffee. Maybe one of them will become my new go-to.

How about you? Have you ever quit coffee? Or maybe you don't coffee at all? What's your go-to pick-me-up beverage if choice? Leave a GIF below to show what you look like without caffeine! 🤪

The Effect of Caffeine on PMS

Coffee is one of the most studied drug in the world. It has many health benefits associated with it, and some health risks as well.. Depending on what you're trying to fix in your life, it may or may not be beneficial to you. Each day over the next 30 days, I will be posting some interesting health information I find about coffee as I do a 30 caffeine free challenge.

All I'm doing is asking... what if? What if I just didn't drink coffee this month? What would actually happen?

Drop a GIF "down there" if you're ready to learn more!
