I am so blessed to work with amazing people with shared values and vision. 🙏🙏🙏

Today was the "Ottawa River Psychology Group" (ORPG) Summer Retreat, 2021. It was a beautiful day spent sharing about helping one other, and ourselves, navigate change. We practiced Yoga, meditation, guided reflections, journaling, read poetry, listened to songs, focused on strengths, had break-out room discussions, and highlighted each other's creativity and resilience. We also spent time in mindful thought on our ORPG clinical director, Dr. Kimberly Sogge, sending her loving and compassionate energy for a speedy and smooth recovery from spinal surgery. It was a peaceful, embodied, uplifting, and creative, day and we feel blessed to work with a team of professionals that share similar values and committed actions.

People may be wondering why all their appointments were cancelled suddenly this week, or why an avid rower’s boat is sitting in its cover gathering dust when the River is at peak gorgeousness. Here’s the update: I have been practicing my profession and living with considerable support from my children and beloved while accommodating a 20+ mm herniated disc in my spine since mid-March 2021. This injury was incurred while following a professionally designed weight training program. However no matter how inspiring the goals, and no matter how relentlessly or effectively our goals are designed and followed, we all still need to listen to the cues from our body over the cues from our coaches or our training programs. As @dr.gabormate @gabormatemd , the renowned Canadian physician of the body-mind health connection, teaches: if you do not say no then your body will say no for you. On March 15, 2021 my spine declared a clear, loud NO to the relentless pursuit of excessive goals. I fell to the floor during a very light Romanian deadlift. I then suffered for months, initially finding some relief with multiple non-invasive modalities but still no solutions to the unrelenting pain and steadily decreasing mobility. Finally, on June 9, my wonderful Ottawa sports medicine physician Dr David Mai saw my MRI and said “you are going for surgery NOW”. Within 24 hours I was at @@ottawacivivheaded for a microdiscectomy with a phenomenal team of surgeons. I am so overwhelmed with gratitude and pride at the excellence, professionalism and healthcare leadership AVAILABlE TO ALL in Canada. (American friends: this was FREE for all who hold an Ontario health card no matter age, ethnicity, education, employment or preexisting condition). Our heakth care system is truly something to protect and celebrate. I am personally thankful for the first pain free day since March as I recovery from spine surgery. Thank you to everyone for their patience while I recover for the month of June. Thanks to all the #healthcareheroes at the Ottawa Civic Hospital I will return to caring for my own patients with even more energy and exuberance very soon. Love, healing and gratitude to all ♥️♥️♥️

The birds they sang
At the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what has passed away
Or what is yet to be
Ah, the wars they will be fought again
The holy dove, she will be caught again
Bought and sold, and bought again
The dove is never free
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
We asked for signs
The signs were sent
The birth betrayed
The marriage spent
Yeah, and the widowhood
Of every government
Signs for all to see
I can't run no more
With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
Say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
A thundercloud
They're going to hear from me
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
You can add up the parts
But you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march
There is no drum
Every heart, every heart
To love will come
But like a refugee
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in

Let go the people who are not prepared to love you. This is the hardest thing you will have to do in your life and it will also be the most important thing. Stop having hard conversations with people who don't want change.

Stop showing up for people who have no interest in your presence. I know your instinct is to do everything to earn the appreciation of those around you, but it's a boost that steals your time, energy, mental and physical health.

When you begin to fight for a life with joy, interest and commitment, not everyone will be ready to follow you in this place. This doesn't mean you need to change what you are, it means you should let go of the people who aren't ready to accompany you.

If you are excluded, insulted, forgotten or ignored by the people you give your time to, you don't do yourself a favor by continuing to offer your energy and your life. The truth is that you are not for everyone and not everyone is for you.

That's what makes it so special when you meet people who reciprocate love. You will know how precious you are.

The more time you spend trying to make yourself loved by someone who is unable to, the more time you waste depriving yourself of the possibility of this connection to someone else.

There are billions of people on this planet and many of them will meet with you at your level of interest and commitment.

The more you stay involved with people who use you as a pillow, a background option or a therapist for emotional healing, the longer you stay away from the community you want.

Maybe if you stop showing up, you won't be wanted. Maybe if you stop trying, the relationship will end. Maybe if you stop texting your phone will stay dark for weeks. That doesn't mean you ruined the relationship, it means the only thing holding it back was the energy that only you gave to keep it. This is not love, it's attachment. It's wanting to give a chance to those who don't deserve it. You deserve so much, there are people who should not be in your life.

The most valuable thing you have in your life is your time and energy, and both are limited. When you give your time and energy, it will define your existence.

When you realize this, you begin to understand why you are so anxious when you spend time with people, in activities, places or situations that don't suit you and shouldn't be around you, your energy is stolen.

You will begin to realize that the most important thing you can do for yourself and for everyone around you is to protect your energy more fiercely than anything else. Make your life a safe haven, in which only ′′compatible′′ people are allowed.

You are not responsible for saving anyone. You are not responsible for convincing them to improve. It's not your work to exist for people and give your life to them! If you feel bad, if you feel compelled, you will be the root of all your problems, fearing that they will not return the favours you have granted. It's your only obligation to realize that you are the love of your destiny and accept the love you deserve.

Decide that you deserve true friendship, commitment, true and complete love with healthy and prosperous people. Then wait and see how much everything begins to change. Don't waste time with people who are not worth it. Change will give you the love, the esteem, happiness and the protection you deserve.

In today’s personal letter I expanded on the three components of self-compassion - kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness - and how they take on a particular form when aimed at providing for our needs.

I also created a 7-minute practice called the Providing Self-Compassion Break that can help us develop fulfilling, balanced authenticity as we ask and answer the ultimate self-compassion question - what do I need?

This practice is also now available on my website!

As I was reflecting on our upcoming Ottawa River Psychology Group team retreat I was remembering our last transition from a tightly connected group of colleagues packed together in my home office to a more spacious connected group of colleagues in our own building just off Pretoria bridge in centretown Ottawa. I was looking for a symbol of healing, transformation and peace that connected all beings without condition. In this time of contemplation I spent a lot of time kayaking and riding on Canadian rivers. 🌊🌊🌊I didn’t see the symbol we needed for our work right in front of me until hearing a wise Indigenous leader teach to a group of young graduates at Mount Allison university. 🌊🌊🌊Here are my notes from that teaching, unedited. I walked out from that teaching knowing we needed to listen to the Ottawa River 🌊🌊🌊and make this wise teacher the symbol for our work as psychologists and psychotherapists. .
.

I believe the name of the Indigenous leader was Chief of Mathias Colomb Cree Nation in Pukatawagan, who was one of the honorary doctorates at the Mt A ceremony in 2018. If I am wrong or if someone can verify, please let me know.🙏🙏🙏

*Whenever you see two rivers come together it is a sacred place it is male and female coming together it is the creation of new energy, people taking care of families, making new things happen.

* See the power of the water for all that is built around it.

* Modern life obscures certain things about us that are important together.

* We are here because of extraordinary power, grace and wonder.

* Humanity is not all there is to life.

* See more deeply and more extensively the gifts from god and from Mother Earth that sustain us.

* Without these gifts we are powerless.

* Never forget the goodness grace and kindness that has come to you - from Mother Earth.

* These are things that we do not deserve and can only partially repay.

* You will see things that call for the best you have to offer compassion and hope.
.
* Listen to the rivers.
