Income splitting is a dangerous tax game if you don’t know the rules

"If you don’t understand the complex rules surrounding what is and isn’t allowed, you could find yourself caught by the attribution rules or, worse still, facing off against the tax man in court".

Jamie Golombek: Our Income Tax Act has a variety of anti-avoidance rules meant to block attempts at income splitting, but there are exceptions to those rules

Fake CRA robo-calls are occurring frequently again. Just so you know, CRA is NEVER going to call you, accuse you of tax evasion and threaten prosecution. Any phone call from CRA would also first involve a registered letter being sent to you.

CRA also will never email you unless you have provided them your email contact info. Even then, should you get an email, hover your mouse cursor over the email address. Unless it says @canada.ca, it is not CRA!

A critical illness can happen to the healthiest person you know. And the healthier the person is, the more likely they will survive the event. Are you financially prepared to survive? How would you manage expenses at a time when your focus should be on recovery? Canadians are tapping into their TFSA, RRSP or line of credit to cover extraordinary expenses and bridge income gap.

Critical Illness insurance can help you be better financially prepared to cope with life after a critical illness by providing a lump-sum, tax-free benefit when you survive any one of up to 25 conditions.

Canada's taxman shouldn't decide who has a disability - Plan Institute

Great article by Al Etmanski. He helped design the RDSP, and has more ideas on how to make it better and more accessible

By Al Etmanski Canada’s Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) is the first poverty-fighting tool for people with disabilities in the world. This remarkable example of federal/provincial/territorial co-operation, created in 2008, has already changed the lives of more than 150,000 Canadians with...

Getting a tax refund means you lost out on money that could have been invested or used to pay down debts sooner.

Submitting the T1213 form "Request to Reduce Tax Deductions At Source" allows you to pay less income tax off your paycheque. BUT! This is only beneficial if you take that extra money and do something good with it like immediately setting up automatic contributions to an investment or debt.

Did you know that you can claim service animals as a medical expense when filing your income taxes?

If you have a qualifying disability, such as blindness, deafness, severe autism, epilepsy or other physical impairments, you can claim your service animal expenses on your income tax return. You may include the cost of buying the animal, food and veterinary bills, as well as money spent training the animal or expenses, such as travel, incurred as you learned how to work with the animal.

Service animal expenses can be added to other medical expenses and claimed on line 330 of Schedule 1 of your income tax return. You may only claim expenses that exceed the lesser amount of 3% of your net income or $2,152. To increase the amount you can claim, report your medical expenses on the return of the spouse with the lowest income.

'Vulnerable' clients charged up to 30% for tax credit as CRA drags heels

At Equity Financial Services we are happy to help our clients apply for the disability tax credit for free. During our presentations we always warn people about promoters that carge up to 30% of their returns.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/tax-disability-cra-national-benefit-authority-1.4422586

Three years ago, the Canada Revenue Agency was directed to craft rules limiting what companies can charge to help people access the federal disability tax credit. It still hasn't done so, and at least one company is charging clients 30 per cent of their tax return.
