Hey everyone, hope you're enjoying your March break! I've found a pretty awesome video that describes the "proper" way to breathe. Most of us have neck tension, and most people I speak to tell me that they hold their stress in "my neck". There could be a variety of reasons why this happens, but one of the most common causes stems from breathing improperly.
When we breathe properly, we utilize our diaphragm which is MADE ever so perfectly to lift our ribcage (along with the help of other muscles located between the ribs called "intercostals"). When our diaphragm is working at its best, you will notice that when you inhale your belly sticks out (kind of like blowing air into a balloon), and deflates on the exhale. What happens when we breathe improperly?
This often happens because of factors that cause stress (good or bad stress) which causes us to forget we have our strong and powerful diaphragm. Instead, our body decides to "fix itself" by using muscles in your neck to lift your ENTIRE ribcage! *Sidenote: neck muscles are meant to rotate the neck, and are certainly not supposed to lift the ribcage. The muscles that are largely affected are the sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezius and scalenes. As you continue (over a period of time) using your neck muscles instead of your diaphragm, your neck muscles get tired, and can eventually develop trigger points that can give you headaches.
You can start to teach yourself to breathe with you diaphragm by laying on a comfortable surface, and placing one hand on your chest and the other on your diaphragm. As you breathe in, try to really focus on using your diaphragm instead of your chest/neck. You can assess this by noticing which hand moves as you breathe in (if your chest is moving- you're not breathing correctly, and if your diaphragm is moving, you're on the right track!). On the exhale bring your belly button towards your spine. Take your time, and don't worry about counting seconds for inhalation/exhalation... Use your own relaxed rhythm.

Happy Tuesday! 🎉
We have survived yet another Monday, and now it’s time to power through the week! Have trouble powering through the week at work? How about stretching?! Stretching is an excellent way to relieve tension, and most people find it very relaxing. Since most of us seem to gather neck tension, I will be explaining how to stretch one of the coolest neck muscles around- the levator scapula. This one commonly is sore from posture and even the way you are sleeping- especially if you’re a side sleeper or a belly sleeper.
To stretch the levator scapula, turn your head to either the left or right (you’ll want to stretch both sides of the levator scapula- trust me). After turning your head, flex your head towards the front of your shoulder. You may feel a stretch here, if you don’t feel free to gently use downward pressure with the same hand you’ve turned your head towards. For example, if I’m stretching my right levator scapula I will turn my head to the left, flex my head towards the front left shoulder, and use my left hand to gently increase the stretch.
*when stretching, it should be pain-free. If you feel any pain stop the stretch immediately. Stretches should be applied for a minimum of 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Also, remember to breathe, it will make the experience much more enjoyable:)
**Always remember to stretch both sides to even out the new muscle length you’ve created!
Probably the sweetest thing I’ve seen all day🙌🏽 #treatyourself
Relaxation goals... 👌
Enjoying this while it’s still up and running!
Wishing everyone safe travels today- it’s getting snowy out there! ❄️
Happy Monday 🎉
Are you noticing that during these cold days your neck feels more sore/stiff than usual? There could be a variety of reasons why, (maybe even pre-existing factors) certainly one of them being as simple as raising your shoulders up to your ears attempting to keep your neck warm. Maybe you might even hunch your spine forward to make the action of raising your shoulders easier?
Something you can try are strengthening exercises for muscles that are commonly weak due to poor posture. By strengthening these weak muscles, it can aid in proper posture- overall decreasing your chances of having neck and shoulder pain.
