I’m raising money for the CHEO Hospital’s 24 hr Yogapalooza - in Support of Childhood Cancer & CHEO, an annual charity fundraiser that supports childhood cancer treatments & research at CHEO. A free one hour yoga class will be offered daily for 24 days between October 2 and 25th. One of these classes will be mine – date is yet to be determined.

Today, there is abundant literature that demonstrates that yoga and meditation have important physical and mental benefits. Both practices have been found to improve mood, counter stress, lower blood pressure, and boost the immune system. Recent research has been exploring the benefits of yoga and meditation to help people to stay mentally sharp, particularly in the senior years. It is well known that brain bulk peaks in the early 20s and gradually declines over time, as the brain loses weight and volume. Nevertheless, modern neuroscience has demonstrated that the adult brain can be deeply transformed through experience and scientists call this brain property neuroplasticity. The brain can be anatomically transformed by our actions, a process called neurogenesis, where brain tissue can be produced through the practice of yoga and meditation.
Research conducted in 2010 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) that studied the effects of meditation among seasoned meditators and non-meditators (control group) found that specific regions in the brains of experienced meditators were larger and had more gray matter than the brains of non-meditators.
A more recent research at UCLA used high-resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to scan the brains of a larger sample of 50 meditators and 50 non-meditators. They found that both groups had a loss of gray matter as they aged, but the decline was much less pronounced among meditators than in the control group (non-meditators), indicating that those who meditated seemed to have a better preserved gray matter.
The authors presented the following conclusion: “Altogether, our findings seem to add further support to the hypothesis that meditation is brain-protective and associated with a reduced age-related tissue decline. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that the observed effects may not only be a consequence of meditating but also of other factors allowing for (or accompanying) a successful long-term practice. Moreover, given the cross-sectional nature of the present data with explicit focus on gray matter, further research—ideally using longitudinal data and perhaps exploring additional cerebral attributes—is necessary to establish the true potential of meditation to maintain our aging brains.” Future research, they also said, should study the effects of different styles of meditation: http://dx.doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2014.01551
