One of the most common things I am asked in a postpartum visit is “why does my baby do ____?” Sometimes it’s just typical baby stuff, for example, cry when they are put down, but sometimes it’s only look to one side, or not nurse effectively on one or both sides. I always recommend having babies seen by a professional who can evaluate their condition and offer you guidance. Marie Shinmoto at MAP Physiotherapy is someone who can help especially in this time of limited in person visits for postpartum families.
We have been seeing a disturbing trend since the beginning of the pandemic - newborns who need treatment who are falling through the cracks. Part of the reason for this is nobody is seeing them in person. Not everything can be seen virtually. Sometimes you just need to get your hands on someone to see what is going on. Here's a little Q & A to clarify.
Newborns need physiotherapy?
Yes, sometimes they do.
What sorts of things would need physiotherapy treatment in a newborn?
Most commonly we see torticollis, plagiocephaly, and issues with latching. Torticollis is a condition where one side of the body and neck is tight. Plagiocephaly is a asymmetry in the shape of the head. Issues with latching are often due to a tongue tie and tightness in and around the mouth. These conditions are all amenable to physiotherapy treatment.
How do I know if my child has any of these conditions?
Quite simply, if you see anything asymmetrical about your baby it needs to be addressed. Maybe their head is always turned to one side, or their body is curved like a banana a lot of the time. Perhaps you have noticed that their head is not equally rounded. If your baby is having trouble latching that also needs to be investigated.
If you have any concerns about your baby we would be happy to discuss it on the phone, or if you prefer, you can go ahead and book and in-person assessment session. As an essential service we are open during lockdown (or shutdown or whatever it is they are calling it this time). Don't wait as these things get more difficult to deal with as time passes.

NCD turns 6 today. I am so fortunate to be able to stand beside Ottawa families as they welcome their babies. What was begun by 3 wonderful women continues to grow and reaches more and more families every day.
Happy birthday National Capital Doulas 🎂
6 years ago 3 women launched something new and NCD hasn't looked back.
We grew and honed our services and our team. A constant is always our dedication to supporting expecting and new families.
We're here because of you and we thank each and every NCD client family for their belief and trust in us over the last 6 years.
We also thank our community and collaborative partners, our friends, and our families.
I want to offer a special thanks to the two women who started NCD with me - Danielle James and Kamerine Gardam. We made an idea a reality through our combined hard work and effort. Thank you!
I also want to say thank you to my team - Andria Bell, Jennifer Cameron, Norah Lynn Paddock, and Alison Burton-Williams. I trust and respect each of you and thank you for sharing and supporting me, my vision, NCD, and NCD client families.
Looking forward to what's to come!
Oh hey! It’s me :)

This World Doula Week we wanted to share a bit about ourselves! #worlddoulaweek

Who is Amie Scharfe?
First some stats - Amie (NCD owner) is a birth and postpartum doula and has been supporting families for 10 years. I am also a childbirth educator, Certified Lactation Counselor, certified babywearing educator, and lactation educator. I have a B.A. with a major in Psychology. I'm a daughter, wife, and mother to three boys (12, 10, and 3). I am now back in school to become an Acupuncturist.
Why do I do this? That is a great question and the answer has evolved as I've spent more time doing this work. I started because my first two birth experiences were negative, each for different reasons. I felt alone and unheard and I didn't want other birthing people to feel that way. Over time that passion remains, knowing the difference it makes for people to have someone there for them, someone who sees them and hears them. My approach to how I doula has shifted, as has my response to the different situations I see. This is true for birth and postpartum. With postpartum work I want new parents to feel the support of my knowledge and experience and the encouragement to fully step in to being the parent they need to be.
Over time my own doula focus has also shifted more to mentoring those coming in to this work. Doulaing the doula! New doulas breathe life and excitement into this work and in turn they have me as a safe space to lean on and pull knowledge and experience from. It's a special blending.
My heart and focus lies with those entering parenting and always will.
You don’t have to live in Ottawa to access our new virtual services and our compassionate support we’ve become known for. We offer these services across North America too!
It's no secret that we benefit from care and support when we're expecting our family and as new parents. So much is novel and unknown and it's a challenge to navigate all of the information out there. At National Capital Doulas we fill that void. We guide, we inform, we encourage, and we bridge that space for you. We do that with in person services and now we do that with virtual services. We've long been known for the level and quality of care we give to our client families. That is now available virtually to families in Ottawa and throughout North America.
Antenatal Doula - access our services through your pregnancy or the time you are awaiting your baby to prepare for birth and parenting
Birth Doula - access our care in pregnancy to prepare for birth and parenting and have us by your side through your baby's birth day
Postpartum Doula - access our care in pregnancy or after your baby's birth to prepare for parenting and to serve as your baby and parenting instruction manual

Maybe there is a silver lining in all of this!
I love you very much, but I can no longer sustain entertaining you every minute of the day.
A little fun about where the NCD doulas were born!
For fun we thought we'd share our birth day details with you. Take a look through - one of us is a Prairies baby... we have a couple Ontario babies, an Ottawa baby, and a Montreal baby. We didn't share year of birth because we have to have a few secrets. 😊😉 #doulabirthstats @ Ottawa, Ontario
An interesting perspective for parents considering where to birth during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I remember giving birth during SARS. It was 2003 and they stopped my partner at the door not allowing him access to the hospital despite me being very obviously in labour. I had to argue with the security guard between contractions and he finally let him in. There was minimal staff at the hospital and afterwards there were no visitors allowed and they had cancelled all of the hospital programs that are available for newborns too.
I spent a lot of time alone in the hospital and although they did the best they could, the nurses weren’t my family. I wanted to show off my baby and talk to my mom! Did I mention this was also before Netflix and I watched one of those tiny rented TVs that had three channels all night long? There definitely were tears 😭 and I felt very isolated when I should have been excited 😊 (even if I was tired 😴)
We didn’t have the Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre at that time and a home birth wasn’t an option for me given that I didn’t have a midwife. If I had’ve had some more options I might have considered a home birth to have more support available and to be able to control my environment.
Birthing people have options! 🏥🤰👶
“Would you want to go to a hospital right now? It’s pretty terrifying.”
Please stay home!
Boris Johnson announced that those in vulnerable groups - including all those over 70 - would be asked to avoid contact by isolating except in very specific circumstances

Let’s talk about periods! Let’s break the stigma. Let’s teach young girls and women how their bodies work. Let’s teach men too so they aren’t so mystified.
Do you feel uncomfortable discussing how your liver works? Why should discussing how the uterus works be any different?
"When you can't talk about what's happening to your body, how do you break these myths?"
Postpartum nutrition is an important factor of how quickly you bounce back after having a baby. Growing an infant takes a lot out of you! You need to heal properly in order to feel well and (should you choose) create another tiny human. That all requires a solid nutrition plan. Yesterday I spoke to a great group of moms in Barrhaven about how it’s never to late to make sure you’re getting the basics in:
1) Eat a rainbow of fruits and veggies everyday to get the most variety of vitamins and minerals
2) Fill half of your plate at mealtime with veggies
3) Eat 4-6 ounces of protein at each meal (I don’t care what the source is as long as it’s clean. If you eat animal products make sure it’s organic and grass fed)
4) Drink lots of clean, filtered water each day (~3 L)
5) Consume mostly whole, unprocessed food
Thanks so much Mommy Connections - Ottawa and Area for having me yesterday. I love connecting with all these moms and their beautiful babies.
Babies come when they want to and it’s not always the most convenient times. Glad this family had the help they needed during that massive storm.
Good Samaritans dug out the Snow house so mom, dad and newborn could get home safe and sound.
I may know a few pregnant ladies 🙂
JANUARY MODEL CALL
Do you know someone who is in their third trimester? I'd love for you to let them know I'm in need of three moms-to-be (between 28 and 36 weeks) at 9 am on Saturday, January 25th. The photography session will take place at my studio in Orleans.
I just added new gowns to the studio wardrobe and need photos of the gowns for my client welcome package. Models must sign a consent for the images to be used by Sara McConnell Photography (both online and in print, no exceptions).
In exchange for her time, the mama-to-be will be provided with at least 2 edited, retouched and artistically enhanced digital images in colour. There is no fee for the session.
The deadline to apply is Monday, January 20th at 12:00pm. I will let you know on Monday evening if you'll be making your way to the studio on the 25th!
To apply, please fill in the following online form:
In addition to being a birth doula with @nationalcapitaldoulas I am also a holistic nutritionist and a holistic reproductive health practitioner intern with Justisse International. I’ve always been that girl that friends seek help from about their periods because, oddly enough, I struggled with mine for so long that I learned quite a bit about the menstrual cycle prior to becoming formally educated about it.
I think the education system fails a lot of kids for a variety of reasons (topic for another day) but especially in regards to their own bodies and physiology. So many women and girls don’t even know that their va**na (where menstrual blood passes from) is separate from their urethra (where urine is passed from the body). Mind blowing 🤯.
So imagine when in a high school classroom setting someone tells them painful periods aren’t normal! What a gift 🎁 Periods are normal and it’s ok to talk about them. Programs like this one need to be in every school. Shouldn’t we all know and understand our bodies?
Because few discuss the symptoms or regard the severe pain and nausea during me********on as abnormal, many suffer for years before getting treatment
I’ve loved being a part of this growing team! I have had the pleasure of supporting some amazing families in 2019. Thank you for trusting myself and the #doulas from National Capital Doulas to be by your side as you dig deep to bring your babies to you.
2020 you have big shoes to fill.
Happy New Year 🥳 🍾 🥂
#top9of2019 for NCD. We've had a great year. We welcomed a new doula to our #ncdteam . We were entrusted with the care and support of many birthing and new families. We educated, and provided comfort tools to a whole lot more. We've supported our #community with our monthly Babywearing 101s. That's one way we give back - there are countless others. We've shared peeks into our lives, into our families, and into our hearts. We look forward to the start of a new year, a new decade, with each other and with you.
Merry Christmas to all and all a good night. Our annual Christmas tree selfie in our pyjamas! Enjoy your day surrounded by family tomorrow and throughout the holidays!
Attention Ottawa Area Mamas or Mamas to be!
I recommend Mommy Connections - Ottawa and Area to my clients because it’s a great way to get out of the house and meet with other mothers who are just.like.you! Their littles are around the same age and everyone is in the same boat with wins and challenges. It’s a great way to build your village and learn some great stuff along the way.
Due to popular demand we have added a second Mom and Baby class in our GLEBE location!
This class will be held in the beautiful dance studio at the Glebe Community Centre, 175 Third Ave. Classes begin Thursday, January 9th from 11-12:30.
Hope to see you there!!!
Were you the first of your friends to have a baby? I was and I found it changed things amongst my friends. I had a hard time relating to their easy going life with late nights and lazy weekends.
I want you to know so many things that I’ve never actually said to you.But mostly I want to apologize.I’m sorry I can’t always listen.Like the other day when I had to abruptly end our phone call—after we hadn’t talked in weeks—because my 4-month-old was screaming so loudly I couldn’t e...
