“Do your part” seems to be the prevailing rhetoric of the last year. What does it actually mean?

For me, I don’t look outside for defining who I am and how I want to “do my part”. I look inside. I begin with me. What is my body telling me.

The best way that I can “do my part” is to be the healthiest I can be. To unburden the health (AKA disease) care system, is to not be a part of it.

To do that I practice the prevention lifestyle (see the latest Today is The Day podcast). Part of that involves regular testing. I’ve addressed the importance of vitamin D testing before (see VitaminDHub.com).

But once a year I do a full “workup”. I test all of my nutrients, gut health, mitochondrial health, fatty acids, toxic elements, and amino acids. These are tests that can’t be ordered from a conventional medical doctor, because they don’t DIAGNOSE. They catch imbalances way before they grow into a disease.

This is the power of functional nutrition. This is what I teach in the certification program (FunctionalNutrition.com). This is what I teach my clients. And this is what should be taught to every person the planet. Join the movement. You’re needed.

It's a REALLY good time to ensure you and your loved ones are taking Vitamin D! A lot of evidence out there supporting that good Vit. D. levels go a long way in supporting your immune system and the fight against COVID-19.

Get liquid, emulsified Vit. D. for best absorption. If your levels are low take 5000 IU at least and if you have no issues with K2 (ask your Dr.) then that will help you absorb.

I can tell you firsthand how much my life and my health changed once I figured this out. I suffered horrible ear infections my whole childhood, often had phlegm in the back of my throat instigating an irritating cough. As I got older I experienced such serious brain fog, lethargy and mood swings. I have been gluten and dairy free for probably 5 years now (with the occasional lapse) and ALL of this is gone (I am super smart now:-))! On top of that my arthritis in my knee and hip are almost non existent.

My best cheat night dinner yet! 30 sec. prep + ten minutes chopping.

Place four chicken breasts (yes raw) in crock pot with 1/2 cup chicken broth, squeeze a lime or lemon over top, sprinkle with salt, pepper and 1 TBSP of chili powder. Cook on high for 4 hours. Pull apart with fork.
Prepare full leaves of romaine, cut a pepper, grate some cheese, prepare a bowl of favourite salsa, slice an avocado and make tacos with your favourite shell, lettuce wrap or tortilla or just create a taco salad.
DELICIOUS! I promise. Better than always using ground beef, beef is inflammatory and harder to digest.

Need a new clean eating recipe that everyone can enjoy, and help save time in the mornings getting out the door? Check out these super cool individual baked oatmeal cups! I'll have to start making these and send the kids and the hubs off to school with a great healthy meal!

Ingredients:
• 1 egg
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 cups applesauce, unsweetened
• 1 banana, mashed
• 1/4 cup honey
• 2 1/2 cups, Old Fashioned rolled oats
• 1/8 cup chai seeds (optional)
• 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
• 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 1/4 cups milk
• Optional toppings: blueberries, raisins, walnuts, chocolate chips, pomegranate seeds.

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix eggs, vanilla, applesauce, banana and honey together in a bowl. Add in oats, cinnamon, baking powder, salt and mix well with wet ingredients. Finally pour in milk and combine. Line a 12 cup muffin tin with paper liners.
Divide mixture evenly into muffin tin cups. I used a 1/4 measuring cup, measure just a tad under 1/4 cup to make 12 servings. Add the toppings.

Bake 25-30 minutes until a toothpick in center comes out clean. Cool and enjoy or freeze them in gallon freezer bags.

Did you know that frozen blueberries in a smoothie completely disguise the green of spinach!!!

My kids morning smoothie consists of:
1 frozen banana, 1 scoop of natural peanut or almond butter, one scoop of Metagenics kids vanilla protein powder, a very healthy handful or two of spinach, a cup of frozen blueberries, chocolate almond milk and water (ice if they like it colder) and a splash of maple syrup.

Also, I often empty a capsule or two of probiotics in there. They love it! I used to have to hide making it because of the spinach, now they ask for the spinach - I think they realize it makes them feel good PLUS as I tell them it checks off a few of their servings of veggies a day in something delicious! If they prefer I could make them broccoli for breaky:-)
