The mouth is the first part of the digestive tract - and the oral microbiome directly influences INFLAMMATION, immune signalling and gut microbiome balance.
Our oral microbiome is a complex, living community of bacteria, fungi & viruses that colonize the teeth, tongue, gums and cheeks.
In a healthy state, these microorganisms exist in balance, acting to protect the oral tissues, regulating acidifying and defending against harmful species. When this balance is disturbed (dysbiosis) harmful bacteria overgrow leading to cavities, gum disease (gingivitis) and systemic issues like heart disease.
When we repeatedly disrupt our oral microbiome with harsh antiseptics, alcohol based rinses and strong detergents we shift the “good” bacteria.
The goal of our oral microbiome isn’t sterility - it’s a balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria.
