UPDATE - Anti-Indigenous Racism in Canada's Health Care System
-----------
Note- Please read the final report "Addressing Anti-Indigenous Racism in Canada’s Healthcare System", prepared by Raincoast Ventures. For more details, please send us an email. -
-----------

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Over 170 participants and 500 observers from National Indigenous Organizations, Indigenous health professional organizations, provincial and territorial governments, health system partners, health professionals and experts, and other stakeholders came together to renew their commitment to eliminating racism by identifying concrete actions and developing response strategies towards that shared objective.

An informal planning committee, composed of Indigenous partners and health system representatives, was instrumental in setting the agenda for the meeting. We want to thank you for devoting your time and effort for ensuring that this meeting was as inclusive and effective as possible.

We also want to acknowledge all of our guest speakers at the meeting. Knowing how difficult these experiences are to share, we appreciate your courage and willingness to stand and speak your truths.

As of January 28, 2021, Health Canada and Indigenous Services Canada had received 32 written submissions from provinces, territories and health system partners identifying planned actions and the meeting provided a platform to discuss specific approaches.

The Government of Canada has announced concrete actions including:
o Launching the engagement process for the co-development of distinctions-based Indigenous health legislation;
o Providing $2 million to the Atikamekw Nation and Manawan First Nation to advance their advocacy for the implementation of the federal aspects of Joyce's Principle across Canada. This funding is approved and will be provided starting in the 2021-22 fiscal year;
o Providing $4 million to the National Consortium of Indigenous Medical Education; and,
o Supporting the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH) to create a one-stop repository for cultural safety and anti-racism tools and resources. The repository will launch in the coming weeks. The National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health is connected with the coordinators of upcoming roundtables so that we can continue to update the platform with the most recent and relevant materials.

Additionally, the 2021 federal budget was released on April 19. Budget 2021 proposes to provide $126.7 million over three years, beginning in 2021-22, to take action to foster health systems free from racism and discrimination where Indigenous Peoples are respected and safe. This funding will support patient advocates, health system navigators, and cultural safety training for medical professionals.

While these are important and promising initial actions towards addressing racism experienced by Indigenous Peoples in health care, we know that more work is needed. We are eager to work collaboratively towards ending racism and rebuilding trust in the health systems.

We hope the report captures what you saw and heard at the meeting. A third National Dialogue has been planned in order to continue to collaboratively address anti-Indigenous racism in Canada’s Health Care system. Details will be shared once available.

Yet another story that demonstrates how the Nurse Practitioner role is not known and is misunderstood in our health care system! Its scary to me that I have been working my butt off as an NP now for 15 years and people still do not understand the role or how it fits into our health care system.... how can this be? The issue is being boxed into a "mini-doctor" role in the back of a clinic. Patients and other providers and even employers will see an NP as just another "doctor" style provider if we are in those roles. THAT is the problem from all of these years! I was boxed in and misunderstood for far too long! Anyways, its TIME for change, TIME for all of the BS to stop and time to move forward as unique providers in our health care system. We are not doctors, we are unique providers that have something far different to offer and its time the world realized this. Once the world realizes this, EVERYTHING will change! As an NP, be sure to join the movement forward. its time to move our profession forward at a FAST rate and not spend another 15 years unknown and working like something we are NOT inside a box!
