I end up telling this history more often than you’d think in my clinic, so I thought I’d share it here. We’re taking it all the way back to basics.

BoNT/A stands for botulinum neurotoxin, serotype A. Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®,Nuceiva® and Letybo® are all the same molecule from different companies.

It’s the same toxin that causes botulism. Scientists purified it in the early 1900s, it became medicine in the 1950s for muscles that won’t stop contracting, and by the 1970s ophthalmologists were using it for misaligned eyes.

Then, Dr Jean Carruthers (Dr Jean Carruthers | Carruthers Cosmetic), an ophthalmologist in Vancouver 🇨🇦, saw her blepharospasm patients’ frown lines soften by happy coincidence. She and Dr Alastair Carruthers published the first study in 1992, and the rest is history.

Fifty years on it’s the most reliable thing we have. One job, done well. Why that job can stop feeling like enough in your forties is episode one of The Pretty and the Gritty, link in bio.

💉Aesthetic Medicine is 𝐍𝐨𝐭 a Service

I want to repost something I said a long time ago that I so firmly stand by that it deserves a second round 👇🏻

I recently (last night) read an article that deeply resonated with my practice philosophy in medical aesthetics. While healthcare has positively moved towards collaborative treatment plans between practitioner and patient, those seeking aesthetic treatments are often seen (or see themselves) as “consumers” rather than “patients”, much more so than those undergoing other medical treatments. While its natural to want to choose and actively seek out a particular treatment, I believe its crucial to shift the mindset.

Here’s why:
Aesthetic treatments are minimally invasive medical procedures, not services. The process isn’t about a “menu” of services—it’s a it’s a collaborative plan that takes into account the patient’s unique medical history, lifestyle, values, goals, expectations, and the evidence-based practices that are most likely to lead to the best outcomes. It’s a plan rooted in safety and expertise.

✨Trust is key. My role is to blend your preferences with my clinical judgment, ensuring your treatment is not only effective but also aligns with your natural beauty and long-term health.

As your practitioner, I am here to guide, educate, and support you—because the best outcomes come from a partnership built on understanding and respect.

Let’s embrace aesthetic medicine as the serious, empowering, and transformative field that it is. 💖

Your tox didn’t stop working.

It’s doing exactly what it did the first time you had it. The thing that changed is the skin on top of the muscle, and that’s a handful of extra problems your tox was never treating.

So before anyone puts more units in your face, someone should look at your skin.

The average person lives with one of these for 21 months. From a spot that was there four days. 🔴

You didn’t add that dark spot by squeezing. Your skin made it on purpose. Let’s break down post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation together!

I’m starting a podcast that nobody asked for. 🎙️🤷🏼‍♀️

The Pretty and the Gritty: what you want for your face, and what’s actually happening.

I do a lot of educating in my clinic and I thought this might be a good way to share the wealth; discuss trends, answer questions, and anything else on your mind.

Every second Monday. Sometimes a guest. Always a source. Never a sales pitch. First episode 22 September: It’s Not Your Skincare.

Trailer’s up now, link in bio.

🌿 If you’re new here — hi, I’m Jen.

I want to tell you what I’m actually doing this for. It hasn’t changed since the day I started.

I came to aesthetic medicine from acute care, and I have never once thought of that as a detour. Five years as a registered nurse in critical care taught me to assess before I act, and to watch for the thing that goes wrong before it announces itself. Starting my nurse practitioner career in addictions and mental health taught me to sit with people at their least comfortable, which is most of what a first consultation actually asks of you. And the primary care I still practise is the reason I can’t look at a face without thinking about the rest of someone’s health.

Every bit of that made me the practitioner I am. I didn’t leave that work behind to come here. I brought it with me.

Here’s what I believe, and always have:

I had such a fantastic time in Newfoundland at the Tracey Hotta symposium. It is such a pleasure to see my colleagues as well as my industry partners from across Canada 🇨🇦❤️.

Thank you Aesthetics by Galderma Canada 🇨🇦 for the opportunity to talk about Menopause & Medication-induced Weight Loss — a topic I am highly passionate about 🥹.

See you at the next one!
