Have you ever thought about all of the things you do in a day that require or is benefited by having access to clean, safe water?

My most recent blog is focused on this concept and how, especially as a mother, my life and daily occupations would be impacted by the lack of water.

It is well known that there is a global water crisis, including our own country. This is not to start a debate or find solutions or get political. This is to bring awareness to how our lives are impacted by water insecurity.

This past weekend I spent 2 whole days connecting with and learning from amazing OTs, many who were already an inspiration to the work I do in my practice.

Thank you to @telehealth_ot for creating a conference and networking opportunity that far exceeded my expectations!

I am so motivated to further my work as an OT.

A big take away from the weekend, think outside of the box, don't feel like you have to do it alone, trust in your own abilities and experiences, and just do it!

I'm excited to see how the future unfolds for my OT practice and knocking some things off my bucket list!

18 months...18 long months of pandemic living and when an end seems to be in sight, the light at the end of the tunnel may get clouded with new uncertainty, fear, worry and many unknowns.

In a time when we may feel we don't have control over our lives, we need to find small parts of our lives we can grab onto and maintain routine and structure with.

Self-care can be one of those things. We know that regular routine and engagement in self care tasks can have an amazing positive effect in our mood and well-being especially during times of stress.

Whether this is stress associated with pandemic living, stress of being a new parent, or ultimately stress of being a new parent during a pandemic!

Finding even just a few minutes a day can start to have an impact. Prioritizing one aspect of self care at a time is better than no time for self-care.

Sneaking in a little bit of education today. Going deeper into the benefits of cognitive behavioral therapy specifically for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

CBT can be a very effective treatment method for PMADs.

As an occupational therapist, I have training in cognitive behaviour therapy along with more advanced post-graduate training.

I've been using CBT with my clients who experience PMAD but it is always great to get more education in an area I'm passionate about!!

Happy first day back to school to the families in my area!

There were lots of mixed feeling and apprehension today waiting for the bus. More so from my perspective! Kids can be so much more resilient than we give them credit for.

My daughter is excited to be going into grade one and finally be back at school with her friends!! She has no problem telling everyone she meets!

Despite the first day jitters and possible excitement, we can't forget what we have all been through in the last 18 months. We need to be gentle on ourselves and others as another big transition, with so many unknowns, occurs. ๐Ÿ’ž

Prescribing nature: Research suggests the outdoors are good for your mental health | CBC Radio

"A growing body of research suggests that being outdoors can benefit mental health and boost memory, improve cardiovascular health and help us live longer. Additional studies find that nature lowers cortisol, the body's stress hormone.

With that research in hand, doctors in parts of Canada have signed on to provide what are known as "nature prescriptions" for those living with mental illnesses and physical health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

Last November, PaRx, an organization led by Dr. Melissa Lem, partnered with the B.C. Parks Foundation and health-care providers across British Columbia to offer patients nature prescriptions. Programs have also recently launched in Ontario and Saskatchewan.

"We leverage what we know about their health status, where they live, what they're interested in to kind of create a customized nature prescription that they can fill," Lem said. A standard prescription, she adds, is two hours of nature per week, at 20 minute or longer intervals."

The mental load of motherhood is not something we talk about very often.

Thoughts of "what if it looks like I can't cope" or "what if it seems like I'm not a good mother" come crashing in and stops us asking for help or admitting when things have gotten too hard.

Mothers are generally responsible to remember, organize, keep track off, and know all the "things". That can be a lot of pressure.

Add postpartum anxiety or depression on top of this and everything can become too overwhelming.

Check out some of the ideas to help off load some of the pressure of motherhood mental overload.

Biggest take away - don't be afraid to ask for help! It truly does take a village. โ™ฅ๏ธ

As a health care provider who recommends getting some time in nature as a therapeutic intervention, I have to also be aware of what might be stopping people from getting outside. The health benefits of time in nature is not going to be as effective if stressors or concerns about the process exist. For many getting outside isn't that simple. Finding out what is stopping someone or causing stress about getting into nature is so important.

This is why I love occupational therapy! We can address these concerns in a holistic way, combining mental health and physical health strategies to help people increase quality of life, life satisfaction, and engagement in activities that are meaningful to them.

Peeing in the woods can be challenging for so many people for a variety of reasons. Recently, my OT students did some research and found a variety of ways that elimination in the woods can happen.

I hope you find some inspiration from these tips!

For any mom who is struggling postpartum and feels like getting out to an appointment is a lot to make happen, I can come to you!

Occupational Therapy home visits are great to be able to make recommendations that work in your own home and realistic with your life.

Mental Health assessment and interventions, postural support, pain and fatigue support, incontinence and pelvic health support, and nursery ergonomics.

These services and more are available during a home visit. Visits are available in Kingston area, Gananoque, Napanee and South Frontenac County. Other locations are available but travel charge may apply.

It is world breastfeeding week this week.

I share this to honour all of the mothers who

*have found breastfeeding to be a struggle

*have second guessed their worth as a mother

*have felt shame when using formula

*have felt pressured to breastfeed

*have hated every minute of breastfeeding and are scared to admit it

*have stopped breastfeeding to care for their own mental health

*have persevered through challenges with breastfeeding because it was important to them

*have enjoyed breastfeeding and have felt empowered

*have paved the way for normalizing breastfeeding in public spaces

*have extended their breastfeeding journey

*have been able to say this isn't for me, right from the beginning

*have pumped and maybe even donated milk after a loss

Every mother's experience with breastfeeding is different. While we take time to celebrate this amazing ability, we also celebrate mother's who have kept their babies fed and healthy in a variety of ways.

Research has shown us that successful breastfeeding experiences can be protective against postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. However, we also know that maternal mental health can suffer when stressed, pressured, or perceived inability to breastfeed is occuring.

A mother's health and wellbeing should be priority and the method of feeding adapted to what that mother needs.

However you feed your baby, I hope you find comfort in knowing you are doing your best no matter what that looks like.
