Plastic surgeon, Dr. Kirsty Boyd changes lives

The first recorded mention of plastic surgery was found in an Egyptian medical text that dates back to 1600 BCE! In it, there are instructions for fixing a broken nose. Plastic surgery has come a long way since then, but it is a great example of reconstructive surgery, which, along with cosmetic sur...

We are aware of the planned protests outside of hospitals today. This is very concerning to all health-care workers and patients. Please take a moment to read this update from The Ottawa Hospital:

Staff and physicians at The Ottawa Hospital have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to protect those most at risk in our community. They all deserve to come into work safely, free from risk or harm.

Those demonstrating outside of the hospital are putting not only staff and physicians at risk, but also the hundreds of patients who come to the hospital for care every day.

The hospital has increased its security presence, to protect staff, physicians and patients, and ensure that patient care is not impacted by the planned protests.

While we respect everyone’s right to free speech, we disagree with the position that these demonstrators have taken. We encourage everyone to get vaccinated, as it is the best form of protection from serious illness, hospitalization and death due to COVID-19.

Hospitals have received tremendous community support throughout the pandemic; from food and coffee, to wonderful signs and messages. Now, the community can show their support for health-care workers by getting vaccinated.

It helps protect our health-care system from being overwhelmed, and ensures that health-care workers can continue to care for those most in need.

Happy Friday!

What does it mean to know someone has a lipedema diagnosis? While one person may not experience all these symptoms, the presence of several can point a clinician to lipedema.

👩‍⚕️ Almost exclusive occurrence in women (rare in men)
👩‍⚕️ Bilateral, symmetric enlargement of her limbs with minimal involvement of the feet and hands
👩‍⚕️ She can feel small rice or even walnut sized lumps beneath her skin.
👩‍⚕️ Pain and tenderness on pressure and at other times in her affected tissue
👩‍⚕️ She bruises easily and may have “spider veins”, also called telangiectasia.
👩‍⚕️ She has found it hard to change her lipedema with caloric restriction and exercise
👩‍⚕️ Disproportionately carries her weight on the lower half of her body.
👩‍⚕️ She is otherwise healthy! Her other blood work comes back normal.

What would make for a more certain diagnosis? How do we move from educated guesses to definitive answers? With your help!

Even if you don't have lipedema, you can 💕support💕 the women who do by joining the Lipedema Foundation Registry! Being able to compare their experiences to yours helps to clarify differences between lipedema and related conditions.

Kathy Kaufield YOU MADE OUR DAY! Thanks so much for sharing!! So great to see!
Well, look what I found in the waiting room at St. Joe's mammography department?! A Dense Breasts Canada poster explaining the importance of women knowing their breast density.
The staffer who did my mammogram told me she hears lots of women chatting about the info on that poster. She gets questions often now about breast density! Sometimes, all it takes is a poster in just the right spot to do so much good! I know just seeing it there did my heart a world of good!
So did the news that my scan on the new 3D mammo machine was "all clear". Grateful for all the fundraising that resulted in that terrific new machine that gives more detailed images. Grateful that NB now notifies women about their breast density category.
I encourage women to keep up with their breast self-exams and regular mammograms.
Next step for NB is to move the starting age of its screening program from 50 to 40. In PEI, women can self-refer for mammograms at age 40. We gotta do that here too!
